My Dad has a friend who just moved to Payson, so we got a place to stay. Is there any decent deer and/or elk hunting nearby on public land for 2 Non-Residents? Open to bow or rifle. Thanks.

The big problem for Non-residents is only 10% of the tags are reserved for them. The animals are here, the tags are hard to come by. But if you are lucky you can get drawn. Deer is over the counter for bow. Rifle is a lottery. Elk is a lottery for bow and rifle.

I see your handle is Xbow. Just an fyi, Xbows aren't allowed in AZ for archery hunts, with the exception of permanently handicapped hunters.

Thanks, I am aware of that. It's an old handle. I have a Mathews or Rifle I can hunt AZ with.

Can I apply with my Dad so that we either both get a license or both don't?

28-Dec-18
yes you can, there is room for 4 applicants per application, all or none get drawn.

Thinking of applying for rifle tags (me and dad). App deadline appears to be June 11th online? What are the odds we draw a tag? I assume unit 22 is the one to go for? Mule Deer or Coues? i'm reading mix reviews

The elk draw deadline is Feb 12. The deer draw deadline is the second Tuesday of June. Archery deer in that area is OTC. You must apply for a rifle permit for deer in the draw. Killing a deer is no cake walk any way you look at it for AZ.

10% of the tags are not reserved for NRs. NRs can draw UP TO 10% of the tags. We are in the same pool until the limit is reached, at which point the NRs are done. Just wanted to clarify that there is not a quota or reserved number of tags.

When does the deer draw open up? I see the deadline for online is early June, but when does it open?

It just depends on when they get the regulations finalized. It's usually about a month before the deadline that they start accepting apps.

so my Dad's friend is a non-hunter, but asked around was told 22, 23, 4A, or 4B is where we should apply. Rifle-wise, from what I read on the AZ website, it appears 22 for Mule Deer is our best bet? rather than Coues and/or the other units?

22 is lower elevation, 23 has areas right below the rim. 4a&b are above the rim. Have seen whitetail in 23 and 4. If you archery hunt you get to shoot any deer with antlers. If you put in for the lottery you have to specify species.

Looks like rifle season is first week of November typically. When is the Archery season? would i have a better chance with my bow?
