End of a Elk Season

With Monday being the end of the Elk season I would like to thank all those that helped me fulfill my lifelong dream of hunting elk. The many hunters that shared info, the conservation officers that always gave advice, my wife for understanding (especially the 3:00 alarm clock). I leave this adventure with many memories (the beautiful sunrises and sunsets, the poison ivy, the biggest rattle snake that rose out of the grass just like a cobra at five feet, the flood that about took my truck, the white knuckle road trip home during the blizzard). I had multiple opportunities to harvest a bull, several smaller bulls early on with my bow, a nice thin horned 7x7 in early October but I passed as I had seen a true monster the week before the season. So after about 45 trips to the fort, a little less than 10k miles on the truck, a whole lot of coffee, and a whole lot of shoe leather, I took a wide heavy horned 6x6 with 2 days to end the season. If anyone draws this tag in the future I would more than willing to help with info. Thanks again to those that helped.

Awesome... it’s an amazing place. Hope to go back someday.
My dad got his late season as well. The cold seems to keep them off the Impact area a little longer. Would love to see a picture of your bull!

Would enjoy pics of your bull. Sounds like you got your money’s worth. Congrats. Extreme cold can be a huge help. I was the 4th of nine filled permits on Nov. 13 when I hunted. A friend has killed three on Fort Riley, and all the last half of December. Kyle, Matt, I really hope you draw. Perfect hunt for both of you — plenty of time and plenty of challenge.

Great bull congrats! Thanks for sharing.
You're not going to do a shoulder mount on that beauty?

Nope , my very wonderful wife only has one rule about my passion for the outdoors - "dead things have to stay in the garage."

Wow, an amazingly typical bull for Fort Riley. Most have extras on top, droptines, or all of the above. Like yours a lot better! When I shot a great bull in the Gila in 2003, my wife said, “Congratulations, where are we going to hang a shoulder mount elk?” Three weeks later I shot my Fort Riley bull and she said, “Great, where are we going to hang two shoulder mount elk. Oh, well the taxidermists will give us at least a year to figure it out.”

How about digging a small pit in the living room so they don't stab the ceiling?
