Where Archery Hunt? NonRes 20+ Deer Pts
Colorado
Contributors to this thread:
Wisconsin bow hunter, so lots of tree-stand hunting experience for whitetails. 10+ Colorado archery elk hunts, mostly drop camp wilderness hunts, some private land. Never been guided, but thinking might be the right thing to do for this "bucket list" hunt. I'd appreciate recommendations on units and outfitters. I can spend a few $, but can't do a $10K hunt. Thanks!
Really? No ideas or suggestions?
If you have 20 points, you have enough points for any deer hunt in the state for archery and most rifle hunts.
What kind of hunt do you want - archery, rifle, early rifle, late rifle, muzzle loader, eastern plains?
What is your bucket list hunt?
If you want an early hunt above treeline, regardless of weapon, you will need to be in good shape just to get around. Other areas you could get a great buck out of a ground blind or tree stand.
Many options for great hunts for sure with that many points.
The units that require the most points to draw do not have any better top end than other units that you can draw with 0 points. There are likely more and higher scoring bucks in several 0 point units than in the five highest point requiring units. You could have had 20 great hunt of a lifetimes already...
Unit 44 4th season. Hunt with your bow during rifle season. Not even sure if 20 points will get you the tag but you can look, if not 3rd season. You have way too many points for an archery hunt so pick and chose what you want.
I hunt unit 44 4th season quality bucks every other year in Eastern CO.
No units worth 20 points for archery hunt IMO.
To the OP. You've had 20 years to plan.
Ok, you've all got me laughing at myself....clearly I have been paying too much attention to elk hunts and raising kids for the past 20 years. I appreciate your points! I really have no interest in a rifle hunt, at least not so far. I'll check out the ideas you gave me, thanks again!
I have a ton of points (resident) and I'm heavily leaning towards blowing them next year on a 0-1 point unit because I have access to a good whitetail spot. I can't really come up with any other use for them that is calling to me. Access to good private spots has a way of disappearing.
Don’t do 201 archery. There are some good bucks but I personally know I can find deer bigger in units that require 2 to 3 points. I used ten points and the big deer I was hunting was stuck and never found by about of state guy who used 13 points to hunt there. He watched me hunting the group with the big deer 185” and next day he was below and shot deer and not good placement. Never found the buck. Buck had extra kicker on back forks both sides 4 inch eye guards and a one inch drop tine on the left. I looked for a week befor I found another group of bucks worth chasing. Took a 163” buck. I have seen bigger in areas that take one point. If you want to spend money look into unit 61, I have no experience but hear good things. 54 is another unit to look into I think you can get a 190” buck around cedar edge Colorado and pay $5000 to $6500. My brother lived up ther a while and went to visit him. Ice deer up there. It’s hard to find the big boys during archery unless you already know the area and a herd holding a good one. I’d burn them points up then in 4 years put in or buy a private land voucher out east from a guide with good land and reputation great bucks out there. But if you don’t know land owner just hire the local guide they will keep you out of trouble and find plenty of good deer to choose from. I missed a white tail out east one year easy 205” deer saw him the next year again then never again. The landowners out there always tell me I can hunt any of those small white tail out there. They like the mule deer and there are both and both are big. I saw a 200” mule deer one evening we where hunting just at dark went back next morning three of us set up in different spots never saw him again but saw one of the kicker buck that was with him. Big deer all spot and stalk in tall grass lots of fun lots of opportunity and the season if long. That fun for us because it’s just 1 1/2 hour drive. I’d look into 33 and 30 also heard good about those units but honestly 20 points wow I’d use those on a rifle hunt 4 th season when all the big bucks are up moving and stuck on stupid.
