G&F Archery Deer (either or)

New draw app. Your thoughts? I don't like it myself.......
By Either/Or I assume you're referring to archery is now either Sept or Jan season, but no longer both seasons.
Mixed bag. On the one hand we'll have nearly double the hunt codes so more opportunities to draw, on the other hand I'd guess the majority of bowhunters hunt deer in January so those hunts will be harder to draw.
Been this way up northwest forever...
Carl, the majority of bowhunters hunt elk in September ;) I believe the January hunt will get extremely crowded in the draw for those of us who have previous engagements in September if ya know what I mean ;)
I'm mixed, but if this does help quality of mature bucks it could be good. Yes odds will decrease but just put your 3rd choice for sept deer in your elk area and you might appreciate it.
If I had a deer tag in my elk area this year I would have killed a really nice buck but that would never happen if I had a tag, sucker walked right by me while I was at my tipi.
The "problem" with Sept is your stars might align and you draw an elk & a deer tag. In different units :o(
Smarba, Ya that's a good problem to have, and I wouldn't mind it every yr. I think all my stars are aligning this yr. :)
I had that problem one year. Unit 2 Sept deer and a 6A Sept elk, while in the middle of doing an addition on my house.
How does this help the quality of mature bucks?
Was the overall number of deer tags reduced? Did G&F reduce the number of January tags? Those seem to be the only ways to reduce number of bucks taken.
If G & F just took the total number of tags and split in half for each season that doesn’t help anything.
I haven’t looked into to what actually happened with the tags so I’m just asking.
Shaft, They split the tags. So now with less tags in Jan one could assume that less of the big mature bucks would be harvested in Sept compared to Jan when they're most vulnerable. I could be wrong.
They really jacked U-32 up, 100 tags for Jan and 150 for Sept, correct me if I am wrong but it basically drops the odds to draw a tag in January by over 60% and in other units it is right at 50%.
I don't know what jackalack at the G&F thinks that hunting Roswell in Sept is a good fun hunt, it isn't! it isn't even a good time to scout that unit, it can down right brutal on the heat index effectively reducing hunt hours to maybe an hour in the a.m. and a 1/2 hr in the p.m.
The archery kill ratio in Jan isn't the issue of getting more big bucks in a unit like 32, the problem is the 1300 rifle tags......but yea lets take over half of all January bow tags away.
What a fkn joke, I'll tell you why bowhunters get fkd, its because we don't have a strong bow hunter association that is in their damm faces and I blame every sorry SOB that "didn't" join and help the UBNM be successful.
Barrera is right. If a hunt code for a hunt unit had 200 tags for both Sept and Jan, by splitting and keeping the same total number in the unit, only 100 will be hunting Jan now.
We all know in the past all 200 would wait around until Jan to shoot a big buck. Maybe a handful would be shot in Sept, but not many.
Realistically, I see leftover tags for September in the southern half of the state. JP is right. Temps near 100 degrees, deer are pretty much nocturnal, and quality of the animals won't be affected at all. For me, why would I put in for a deer tag in the units I apply for elk? I don't want to lose a day or 3 packing a deer out and finding a meat locker no telling how far away. It's just stupid.
JP, did you tell me G&F tried this some years ago and it failed miserably?
I hate the split personally. It’s hard enough to draw an elk tag so it was always nice to have two opportunities to hunt deer.
I really don’t understand how there’s more opportunities with the same number of tags but split unevenly. Some units for example had 100 and was split 60/40. That 40 is going to be a real taskto draw now compared the overall 100.
Agreed lots of September tags will be left over.
Just think if you don’t draw an elk tag and draw Jan tag for deer you won’t even hunt in the present year. Sucks imo.
I've only looked at 32, but originally there were 200 tags, now there is a total of 250. 150 in sept, and 100 in January.
Speaking solely for myself, I will only apply for January hunts. How many of you will do the same?
Me, and everyone I know.... so 3 of us HAHAHA
Lol OH. You, me, and everyone we don't know too ;)
Apps are all in and have a Sept deer on my app.
