2020 Resident Guide
Wyoming

I need a 2020 resident guide. Surely somebody wants to hunt the backcountry that doesn't have the means to do so without somebody like me. I can't go hunting there without said guide so it's a win win. Pm me if you're interested. I have all the stock & equipment. You'd just need to be willing & able to go. I've got a buddy who has a gf from Wyoming who says she might go but I'd prefer to have a male that is an elk Hunter or wants to be. I'll bring a Wrangler and pretty much give you an $8-15k+ hunt for just being willing to go.
What areas are looking at? What is your experience? These might help people to know where and what they are getting into.
I'm going into the Thorofare region. My experience in this area is zilch other than map & Google Earth studies atm. I'm going to ride in there in July if the snow is gone well enough I can & I'll know more. I hate to be real specific on here about my plans but I do have some specific drainages on my radar.
You might give a call to the Shoshone Forest office in Cody and find out where the registered outfitter camps are. There are rules about setting up by them and really why would you want their competition. That's quite an adventure if you've never been there (step, mean, rocky, bear infested, etc) but you'll see what I mean when you go. Not saying it can't be done, just be prepared to visit the most remote peace of earth in the lower 48. Good luck to you.
I'm very much used to the terrain. I hunt not far from there in MT & ID. I know they won't want my competition but I'm not worried about theirs so much. I figure there is plenty of room in there for the amount of people who will be in there. Much less pressure than areas with easier access. The things you warn me of are the exact things that draw me to this type of country. I appreciate your insight!
I have elk hunted the thorofare 2 times and we killed some nice bulls. I was near Hawks Rest and Bridger lake. That's Lynn Madsen's area. He owns Yellowstone Outfitters. 2 Ocean Pass Outfitters was just south of Lynn's operation. Very big area. Easy ride in. I think it took us 8 hours of riding to get into camp. We started at Turpin Meadows. Lotsa Grizz and wolves. If you hit the snow just right the elk pour through that area.
Thanks alot Benhuntn. I've been watching a guy for a number of years who hunts it that is very successful. I intend to come in from the north but I may check into going in that way at some point. Again I appreciate the insight!
From what I understand even though you find a resident that is willing to be a guide they still need to apply for a guides license through an outfitter? I think it would be great if the resident just needs to fill out paper work but not sure if that's correct?
That's totally not how I understand it sir. It's an odd deal because several people have told me this & believe it to the point of argument but there again that's not how it is.
Here you go: 8. How do I become a licensed Professional Guide?
Professional Guide’s must be at least eighteen (18) years of age, employed by or work under independent contract with a licensed Outfitter. They must submit application to the Board in conjunction with a valid first aid certification card and, if born after January 1, 1966, submit a copy of their Hunter’s Education card.
Applicants not previously licensed, or not licensed within the last 2 years, are required to take the Professional Guide Exam that is available on our website. The exam must be submitted with the new application, new applicant fee, and regular licensing fee.
Professional Guides who have not been licensed in the last two years must also pay the new applicant fee in addition to the regular licensing fee and retesting.
All Professional Guides must sign their license and have their employing Outfitter sign the back of the document.
Here's the outfitters website: https://outfitters.wyo.gov/faqs
I just noticed that a Resident Guide License is different from Professional Guide License. You'll have to check out the WG&F regs to see what is required. It sounds like the resident must possess a big or trophy game license...not sure if it has to be the same one the nonres has?
12. Is a Resident Guide License (RGL) different from a Professional Guide License? Yes, Resident Guide Licenses are issued by Agents of the Wyoming Game and Fish to any resident of Wyoming who possess a valid resident big or trophy game license.
RGL are issued without charge or bond by the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission, any district supervisor or resident game warden upon receipt of affidavit from the resident stating the names and addresses of the individuals to be guided.
Resident Guide Licenses are not available through the Board.
Sir this information has been common knowledge for years and should clear it up for you.
I'm glad I looked it up because I was unaware of this until now. I looked in the Wyo regs for quite a while and couldn't find much in regard to the res guide reg. Do you happen to know exactly what big game license a Wyo res needs? Will a res general deer or any other tag suffice? The regs seem mighty vague?
Wow, you are quite the gentleman calling me sir! Thank you!
Now the exact tag the resident guide was carrying I never really put much thought into as I just figured anyone wanting to go would want to be hunting elk since that's my primary target so on that one you've stumped me. I would imagine it's for any big game animal legal at the time & place but will have to verify.
Pop-r, I have done this a few times for my non res buddy. Whoever takes you just needs any big game tag. They will also need your name and a copy or picture of your tag. They will take that documentation in to the game and fish and in about 5 minutes they will fill out the form for him and he’s good to go. He can take 2 people a year with this res guides license.
The guide must accompany you while hunting too so keep that in mind. They can not just be in camp.
pop-r I have been a resident guide in the wilderness. It is no big deal. It is just a piece of paper. I would go with you, however I will be on a guided elk hunt at the same time of year in a different location.
I'm not set to any specific dates as we'll have a good while to get it done. Keep it in mind. Somebody is going to go.
The guys have it correct. Whoever goes with you will be in and out of G&F in 5 minutes. with the necessary resident guide license. I've done it many years for nonres buddies.
