Where the hell in Kansas is that!? Just kidding, great job on successfully harvesting a beautiful bird. I'll be scouting for them in southeast Kansas this weekend.
Watched this tom breeding a hen yesterday near Eureka, seemed early to me? He stood on her for 5min before "sealing the deal". Another hen ran in in the midst of that, and hit the ground 5' away as if she were receptive as well?
KS Youth Season 2019-Cowley County 9:45 AM. My 15 yr old daughter Kate gettn’r done! Approx. 9 inch beard. Her 2nd Tom with gun. She said her next one is gonna be with bow.
She learned a lot on this hunting trip.....saw her first night time view of Flint Hills prairie burning, lesson in setting up the blind and why we position it on the east end of a field in the morning (so the sun will be in the birds eyes when he approaches), patience in not shooting a crazy Jake that taunted her all morning by gobbling and pacing back and forth in front of the blind for over 2.5hrs straight. Think I might of worn out my box call? Then was rewarded with this Tom about 10 min after the Jake left the field. She also learned that her Dad (me) might of tricked her into shooting his 12 ga Mossberg 500 3” shells instead of the softer kicking 20ga that she thought she was actually shooting.
Great times with the young’ins to be cherished for sure!
Mike and I took his youngest this morning, had two groups of Jake's come in but didn't offer a good shot. Gotta love it when the plan comes together...hope you can get her a "bow-bird" too!
Here is a 17 sec clip from the hunt when the Tom was on the right side of the blind and Kate wanted to try and shoot it from that side instead of out the front of the blind. Patience Danielson!
Here is the clip from the shot and the father-daughter euphoria that followed. You may have to turn your volume up due to the whispering before the shot.
Way to go Kyle! A friend of mine's 8 year old son shot a nice tom this morning in Montgomery county. I know where a few longbeards are roosting, so hopefully I can catch up with one this weekend.
Congrats to the you and the boy Lucas, his smile says it all!
Here's the video of my hunt from Tuesday, if you've got a few minutes to burn(click on settings and switch to HD...it's worth it).
I had been watching two toms and around 10 jakes strutting, gobbling, and following a few hens behind me. Had heard one gobble to my left about 15min earlier but I honestly thought one of the jakes had circled, it never answered my call, and I hadn't heard anything on the roost from that direction.
All of a sudden I look up and there's a tom in the deke's? I start screwing with the cameras and getting set to draw, all of a sudden two more tom's come in from the left and push the first away. I could tell they weren't going to stick around long, so I decided to shoot as the bigger of the two turned to leave. The bird didn't die in the field, but after 10min I walked over to the edge across from me and he was laying there with his buddy standing over him...I got lucky.
Awesome pictures Brian! I always love seeing those huge flocks of turkeys. Beautiful pics of those strutting toms too! Ill be after 'em in southeast Kansas tomorrow afternoon.
Comgrats to everyone who has taken birds so far. Some great pictures on here! I went down to Chihuahua, Mexico to hunt Gould’s. Managed to complete two Royal Slams while I was there. A couple of great birds.
