Fellow bowhunters...I am looking for a private ranch, “not guided”, that I can pay a trespass fee on to hunt antelope. Not picky on trophy quality. I’ve never killed one and I just want to hunt one. Thanks for any help you can offer!

I have 5 now and will by the 6th this year. Didn’t want to burn them just yet. Fish & Game said that I can buy a leftover tag “IF” I’m hunting private ground. I would like to gain some more experience before I burn my points. That’s why I don’t care about trophy quality...just want to go hunt them. Thanks!

Just get a BLM map of the area you want to hunt. There are usually 1-2 square miles of public ground in each township. Also the Thunder Basin Grasslands south of Gillette.

Thanks Osage. Can’t hunt public. Has to be private. I thought someone might know a rancher that allows bowhunting for a trespass fee.

"Fish & Game said that I can buy a leftover tag “IF” I’m hunting private ground."
you were given bad info
I would study the process a bit more and apply in the draw trying to draw a 2nd choice license. If that fails, I would look at last years leftover list and decide on one of those licenses to apply for. I would not plan on any leftover license being a sure thing except maybe 23 type 2 and if I wanted to hunt, I would be trying to get a license without going the leftover route.

Yep, may have some leftovers for the draw but they will be iffy. Do a second choice in the app, WB has the right info. Most all license areas will have "some" public land that you could hunt.

For unit 23 I was told by fish & game that to wait for the June leftover drawing. There will be lots of tags left over and I won’t have to burn my points. Not true?

Lots of leftovers for private ground that is. I thought that there would be lots of leftovers for private ground in many units? That was my take on the conversation. I will talk to them again. Thanks guys!

Yes, 23 is an exception for leftovers because they created a type 2 for private land only, and allocated a chit ton of licenses. Look at the 2018 leftover list, cross check those areas with leftover tags against the 2018 regs and see if/what the restrictions are. Many of the doe tags have restrictions; a sub area in the unit, private land for a time period, then the whole area, etc. There are a few "any antelope" hunts for private only but I wouldn't say there was a lot of them, 23/24/29 at first glance. You should be fine waiting for the leftover draw in 23 and 24; I'm just not the gambling type. I like to lock up a cpl licenses in the initial draw then go for leftovers. And remember, you can get 2 full price and 4 reduced price licenses.

Wife and I hunted 23 last year, we got "2" tags in the draw, no points, then picked up doe tags leftover, also private land (not 100% sure on that part), there were TONS of doe tags left
