I'm heading to the SE corner of Montana (Broadus area) in September for antelope. Has anyone from Wisconsin ever taken hwy 12 through MN-SD rather than the I94 route? The reason I ask is any Wyoming trips I take hwy 20 rather than I90 as the traffic is wayyyy less and it's an excellently maintained roadway. Hoping hwy 12 is a similar deal. Thanks........

I cant speak for 12 in SD. But in MN, 94 is by far the quickest route. Depending on what time of day you hit the cities, you may breeze right through. 12 is comprised of many small towns and stop lights. They have begun to turn much of it into freeway now, but still lots of stops.

Everyone I know takes 94. Keep in mind the speed limits are usually higher on a interstate. Which you can usually push by up to 12 mph over without getting a ticket....in some states that puts you at about 85-90 mph.

I would go 90 if you are starting from the south part of Wisconsin. If you are thinking 94 thru the twin cities check on road construction there and be sure you do NOT hit rush hour traffic there.

I’ve taken the 212 route a couple of times when we head out to Western Sodak. It’s probably a little shorter in terms of miles, however it’ll be longer in time. Either way, a pretty boring drive!

I always drive 90 across Minnesota, and than cut up, fast and easy drive

When we would go to Idaho, we would run I-94. We would go through the City's around 3:30 in the AM and flew right through. Pretty slick.

Avoid 212 in my opinion. Drive it quite a bit, lots of small towns and semi traffic.

Don’t make good time west of cities to South Dakota border.

We'll time through the Twin Cities as off peak as possible & keep heading west on I94. Again - appreciate the help. Safe hunts........Dave.....

When the time comes check the construction status for 94 in the Minneapolis area. The north loop is best because the south loop is a little longer than the north loop. But depending on construction conditions and accidents one route might be better than the other. Sometimes, even at off peak times.

Take 94 into Montana to Glendive. Take hwy 200 to Jordan . Spend the nite at 1 of the cheap hotels .

Go to the Hell creek Bar & Resturant . Great meals , great drinks , & a back bar of Brass , hardwoods, Bronze, and Cut glass thay was shipped from europe in the 1880's .

Oh yea , the walls of this huge Cowboy bar are full of Book Elk , Muledeer & Lopes .

The next morning while hung over , take Hwy 59 SE to your hunt area .

On a serious note . The hunt is important . But the company on the trip & the cool places you stop at are all part of the memories .
