Stuben County has the biggest bucks and one of the highest deer populations in NY. It is just south of Lake Cayuga and Senica. There are some game lands with very light pressure during archery season. I kill deer up there almost every year on public land. There is not a ton of deer but if you do your scouting you will find deer. I imagine private would be better once you make some friends. Doe tags are not that east to get, especially for an out of state hunter. You can get one either sex tag.

Thanks CH. Im looking for a canoe trip and it appears Im heading towards Lake Placid area. I discovered the finger lakes may be well to large for a canoe in hunt. The hunting and fishing will be better but i probably wont get a lake to my self lol. Im looking more for the experience rather than an obvious filled tag, which isnt going to happen to me lol

Heading up to Placid in July to scout out possiblilities and another casino-Turning Stone for my wife:) gotta keep her interested you see!

Your talking Adirondacks.. Many if not most the deer number's are not high. Certain part of the Adirondacks do have a higher number, but no where near like Pa or the Catskills.. Adirondacks has a ton of lakes that you can hunt from, but the winters are brutal (high snow). Look for areas that the snow doesn't get 200 plus inches. If I remember right Cranberry lake had a littler higher number of deer. Ed

Dale,

If you’re going to be near Lake Seneca, check this place out. It’s an abandoned military base, which was shut down years ago, and is now home to one of the largest white deer herds in the country. My wife and I toured it last October, and it was a pretty neat, and historical experience. The tour guide stated that they were considering allowing bowhunting in the future, so it may not hurt to inquire. Take the binoculars and camera....and maybe the bow n arrows, just in case! ;-)
