Last summer and this summer I've seen some animals acting pretty strange (racoons, mink or weasle not sure) some have come stumbling through the yard and I had the mink type animal attack my truck tire while sitting at a stop sign. I asked some of the farmers around the area and they have seen similar things. I thought maybe they were rabid but one farm said it was some type of brain worm that was spreading like wild fire because nobody coon hunts anymore and the population is out of control. Anybody heard of this?
I have heard of brain worm, but only in Moose when they get around too many deer. They may be getting distemper or rabies. Thank the anti fur and anti trappers, it has been happening more and more. Of coarse, those people do not care about human beings health.
Have you ever tried to get a "trappers" license in Wisconsin. You have to spend a weekend sitting in a class but can walk into any Walmart to buy a deer tag for rifle season.
Just another wonderful policy of our lovely DNR.
Wrong to get a "deer tag" you have to complete a Hunter education class. To get a trapping license you need to complete a Trapper education class. Once completed you can walk in to most Walmart's and by a trapping license. I think the DNR had it right. As to the decline in trapping the high cost of maintaining a trap line, and low cost of furs have driven many from the sport. IMHO.
I don't think everyone is required to take a trapping class. I started trapping in Wisconsin around 1964 when I was about 10 years old and am pretty sure I would not need to take a class if I were to trap now. Although I did take a wolf hunting/trapping class when I drew a Wisconsin wolf tag. I think that was mandatory.
Antis don't care about people or animals, just their Disney movie feelings.
Animals live a tough life. Being dispatched by a trapper is about the best death a wild animal can have. Much better than dying of starvation or disease.

Not unless you were born prior to June 1972 or take a Hunter Safety class.
2 weeks ago in Richland county I saw a coon at about 3pm walking across a cut field. He was walking oddly, would stop and look around every few steps.
I am sure he was sick, unusual time for him to be out and about and walking like that.

Bump, trying to get rid of the crossbow threads
Trapping class is mandatory....
Your equating a person using a trap to a high caliber rifle....I can see where the DNR gets it`s thought process from.....geez.
Trapping class is mandatory unless you have possessed a trapping license in the past.
I don’t think landowners need trapping class, but I’ve been wrong once before.
Need hunters Ed to get any hunting license including archery. Plenty of lethal traps out there.
The class isn't burdensome at all. You can even take it online. Cost all of $12.
Correction.....you are right Tweed about online.
If you can PROVE you have trapped prior to 1992....(and no it`s not in their computer somewhere) then you are exempt. Farmers and landowners that qualify are also exempt.
A few years ago the DNR listed in their regs that "Wisconsin recognizes certain states trapping courses".....when I contacted the DNR to find out which courses they "recognizes" they told me quote...."at this time we are only recognizing one.....OURS". At that point I said "I guess I`m taking the class". Now they list states that have similar programs as theirs and have an agreement with.
The point is this is just another Madison brain fart that does nothing help with conservation.
The challenge I have is yes I can take the course online but you still have to go for a hands on test and they aren't offered near me so I just have to wait until the hands on part is offered within a reasonable distance
When I went Chief the class was in person. The only class was almost 2 hours away EACH WAY. So I had 8 hours of windshield time for what was nothing short of a comical waste of my time. The course is geared towards a 10 year old kid.
When agencies make things so difficult and time consuming they are basically telling you...."we don`t want you to trap....but if you really want to, we are going to make you jump through hoops and make you pay for it to boot".
This was all done to make sure that trappers, trap in a correct manor for the public image. The anti trapping idiots used bad practices to show there view of what trapping was to Joe public. This requirement came from that, to try and make sure trappers were not downgrading public image and trap in an ethical way and not potentially loose a vital rodent management tool.
If you don't recognize the value of making sure trappers have at least a basic training of ethical and effective trapping, you know nothing about conservation and should stop using that word.
I don't think the trapping class is a bad idea. I would love to take one as trapping is something I would like to get into and I know little about it. The problem I have is they have one class a year in my area. The last 3 years it has fallen on a weekend when I could not attend. Why not have them a couple times a year?
Skook+1000. That is exactly why trapper Ed. Is now required. There are way too many opportunities to screw up and kill the sport. Ethics and proper sets are what it is all about. It is so much more than catching an animal. I took trappers Ed even though not a requirement.
I took the wolf trapping class when I got my tag and it was totally worth my time and expense to do so. The instructors were top-notch.
As far as the general class it has to be dummied down so it can be understood by all age levels. Especially now that we don’t have a cut and dry starting age for hunting and trapping anymore.
Farmers and landowners are only exempt on their own land. I’ve never checked about leased lands that they rent so I’m not sure on that. I’ve had a trapping license since 1971. It’s a great sport and we need to police ourselves more critically than the written rules to be able to continue the tradition.
I'm all for the class just wish they held it more often
We have to remember that the safety classes are taught by volunteers that get nothing for the time they put into getting and maintaining their certifications and the classes they teach. Not many people are willing to volunteer their time any more. I teach three or four classes a year but can't afford to take more time off work to teach more classes for students that need it.

Skook I didn't know that's how it worked, thanks, that helps change the perspective
Oh wow... I thought they had diagnosed Jake's issues!
I was checking traps and had a coon sitting along the bank looking very strange. I realized he wasn't even near my trap (a 1.5 pocket set for mink) . He was sick, very sick. I put him down and buried him. Don't know what it was but he wasn't good. Pelt was in terrible shape.
I think the classes are a great thing, and thank you to all the instructors who give their time.
Most likely distemper. That gets lots of coons if populations are high.
I bet half of you that are "for the class" never even attended it....lol. If you are an adult outdoorsman and learned anything from that class you have no business trapping in the first place.
Unless you have taken the class you really should keep quiet.
I grew up in a family of long liners, still enjoyed the classes with two of my children.
Key phrase....."with two of my children".....my point exactly.
Having brain dead bureaucrats in Madison setting policy for outdoorsman is ridiculous. Forcing ADULTS to waste their valuable time sitting in these childish, borderline silly classes....which includes the Hunter Safety class....is not only disrespectful, it`s offensive. You want my money....fine, but cut the BS.
I still sometimes set out traps, and I have taken the course. I also am a hunter safety instructor and a bow hunter education instructor.
If your an adult outdoorsmen and feel you don't need the trapper education then you have no place in the outdoors setting traps.
Good advice, if you have never taken the course then you should keep quiet
Come on Elk....I have trapped from here to California. Absolutely nothing in that course was useful to an adult. Part of the test was identifying skins from a coyote...racoon...muskrat....mink and a bobcat....WTF.
Then we had some stroke volunteer doing a coon cuff set up and he put marshmallows, cake frosting in it and then squirted pancake syrup in it. Then to top it off we had a Warden show up and he couldn`t even answer questions about trapping in a refuge area. It was fricken embarrassing.
I can't speak for your experience of the course but I know several serious instructors who pride themselves in how they conduct their classes.
They give of their own time to help promote the sport they love.
Rather than complain possibly a man of your prowess should give some of your time to promote the sport and educate people who have not trapped from here to California.
But I would guess that would be beneath such a standout like yourself.
Lol. He's above us mere mortals.
When I run my own classes, I make it mandatory for young students to have an adult attend the first class. It is guaranteed that I will have the adults answer questions wrong. Even the grizzled hunters with experience like Franklin.
I would never volunteer my time as I don`t believe in the premise.
I don`t come from the position where adults or even mature young adults need coddling from a know nothing government agency. If it`s just to collect money than say so....don`t try to spoon feed me a bunch of BS.
Look on the Hunter Safety course online....what`s the first thing you see....paraphrasing...."unlimited attempts to pass". What a useless crock of crap.
If volunteering in a sham strokes your ego then have at it....lol. Don`t forget to wear your patches on your shirt so everyone else can see.
I don’t like the online safety classes. But with the shortage of instructors because of people like Franklin that are to full of themselves in areas it’s needed. I have taught Hunter Safety in Waunakee, Beaverdam, and Waupon. I lived in Waunakee and traveled to help out the other communities so they could have a class all on my dime and time. After moving North I contacted a couple clubs about helping them and was told they had enough instructors so I’ve been retired so to speak.
Franklin just doesn’t get the fact the class has to be geared for anyone from 8 to 80 years of age so yes some aspects are dummied down because of it.
With Franklins experiences he could help to make the class to meet his expectations but would rather be lazy and just bitch.
DT - The coon population is way down by me. I have only one coon visiting each bait site where last year I had anywhere between 8 and 14 every night.
On 2nd thought franklin, you don't have what it takes.
Too small of a man obviously to matter to any young outdoors person.
Carry on with promoting yourself but be sure to understand that nobody is listening.
Brain worm possibly?
I had 6 coons in my yard last night.
I saw 3 more today just wondering around a field mid day
Government is never the answer to ANYTHING. 100% of what is discussed in the trapping class is written in the trapping regs. But for some reason they feel the public is too stupid and helpless to read and understand them by themselves.
So they have some clown who works at Ace Hardware volunteer to explain them for 2 whole days.....lmao.
Franklin, what folks are trying to stress is that you cannot equate your perception or experience and extrapolate it across all facets of programs to enable safe and ethical sportsman. Similarly, if you tasted a ribeye that was poorly cooked by a picnic chef and lambasted it telling the neighbors what a poor cook Joe is doesn’t mean ribeyes taste bad or all Joe’s are poor cooks. I firmly believe the onset of hunters/trappers Ed programs has helped the sport. These programs were not started because somebody thought it would cure boredom. The fact is, gun safety is at an all time high due i part to the education programs. Trapping is being banned in several states...why, the perception that non-ethical trappers have given it. For the small amount of time it takes to certify, it pales in comparison to time spent at stoplights, taking a dump, and in general...living. Breath the fresh air and be positive. Negativity strikes years off your life.
What you and others fail to understand is forcing a tax paying adult outdoorsman, whose time is valuable....to sit through a silly USELESS class geared to "everyone from 8 to 80" is a stupid government overreach.
The only reason they are defending it is because they participate in the charade. Sounds like you are smoking what you are growing Treefarm….lol
Somebody's taking this a little too serious I think..
Pick your battles gentlemen; you'll live longer:)
Yea....taking life too seriously is dangerous to your health.
Like I said before....maybe the people who have actually TAKEN the class should comment. I know Treefarm couldn`t of taken it because these "outdoors classes" have a curriculum. They have agency issued workbooks, worksheets and tests. There is no freelancing of information.
What would make a person think a volunteer can teach a child better than a parent. It`s not their job and no it doesn`t "take a community to raise a child". Personal responsibility has left the building. Typical Madison group think.
How old are you Drop Tine....12? What`s next cartoons with crayons.
Oh poor boy, do you need a safe spot? Mama’s basement maybe? LOL
Your the child Drop Tine....this is stuff you see on Facebook or Instagram.....grow up and act like an adult. Or put down the bottle....either one will work.
Your the one with your panties in a wad because you had to take a trapping class for certification and your getting called on it. What makes your time more valuable than anyone else’s?
I took the class. I'm a very busy person with two kids and a wife. I enjoyed it and it didn't feel like a burden. There was more info presented in the class than what is found in the annual trapping regs booklet.
I was speaking for EVERYONE`S time.....not just mine. My guess is I have struck a nerve with those that are involved in these silly classes.
I`m just glad the DNR has realized these ARE a waste of time and allow folks to do it at their leisure at home on a computer.
It looks as though flying the kite during the electrical storm did some damage to the cranium.
It could be argued that speaking for others is a waste of time, too. Especially when the others have voiced their experiences as being mostly positive.
For the record, my Grandpa taught me to drive when I was 9 and by the time I was 12 I was driving up town on a daily basis to pickup the mail and whatever granny needed from the store. Somehow I still managed to sit through driver's ed and learn a thing or two. A little more knowledge on any subject never hurt anyone, at least not until now..
Great story South Farm....make sure to save that one for the grandkids when ever that useless analogy is needed.
How many of you are or have ever been involved in any of the trapping classes or hunter safety course. Seems to me the ones with the "positive experience" were also the ones that said the were volunteers. Funny how that works out....lmao
I see it now. Franklin is just a silly kid acting up seeking attention. Makes Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez look like a genius.
Franklin some time it's smarter to keep your mouth shut, then to open it and let all the doubt out!!! Just saying.
15 posts ranting about a trapping class...did you fail it or why are you SO ANGRY? Dude, you're going to have a coronary if you don't just let it go, but then again I've been here long enough to know guys like you NEVER let it go. So, carry on if for no other reason than you're entertaining as heck;)
Where did I say I was angry....that`s just you projecting. I merely stated facts and my opinion, it was you dolts that took exception to it.
When grown men resort to memes, GIFs or cute sayings like Bootspit`s….you know you are dealing with doorknobs. Now stop your whining....people are tired of it.
The fact is you have anger issues and your opinion is the only one that counts. Unfortunately no one cares forcing you to press harder. Spinning your wheels digging a deeper hole to get out of. LOL
Yea I have anger issues. You couldn`t even understand the jist of my posts you dope....lmao. I posted my opinion....I didn`t ask you to comment, but somehow you felt the need to.
Sounds like you`re intolerant of others opinions. I don`t care what others think....I can`t control it and it has no effect on me. I just like busting your balls....you`re so sharp you don`t even know when you are getting jerked around....rotmfflmao
Actually you don’t know when your being played. I’m actually intolerant of people that complain and whine but offer no solution. Making fun of and complaining about a class and the volunteers that instruct the class because it’s beneath you is as lame as it gets.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
This is why Prozac was invented.
If there's a bright spot to this thread, Missouri has not yet turned it into a scoped crossbow thread - yet - and that is rare.
Scoped crossbows, they shouldn't be discussed on a bow and arrow hunting forum.
Here is a quick tip for those that are not internet chat board savvy....after 4-5 posts on a thread, 90% of the time you are being F-ed with.....and the guy on the other end is laughing his azz off.
About time you get it. LMAO
