So I've been after this nice buck behind the house for a couple years now. Last year I never got one single daytime pic of him. Now I got multiple pics on multiple days and a ton in the daylight.. I am very happy as this is my one and only private land spot.. I got pics of him at 1230 in the afternoon and a ton around 4 on multiple days.
I don't want to break your bubble but that will change the day before opening day .LOL
Shawn regardless of the fact that "hardhorn changes everything" I understand you being pumped.
At least you know he's around and maybe just maybe he'll slip up and make a fatal mistake.
Good luck and hopefully you have an exciting tale to share come fall.
Ya your right Steve. Hes probably got it marked down on his calendar... "leave area Sept 14th".. lol..Yes opening is a Sunday. So this is where I'll be. Behind my house is this huge massive wall with nothing around it. You can see the end of it in the pics. It's so damn thick back there I cant even get up a stand. So right at the bottom to the left of the wall will be my blind. I'm pinpointing him more and more. And this spot is his home. Not just a spot randomly visited once in a while. I only had the cam out for 7 days and he was there in 4 of them. It would be a blessing to get a shot on this guy.. very excited to say the least!!
Now comes the hard part of not checking the camera but once every few weeks in the rain. I drove some off checking the camera all the time because I was so excited.
He needs another Year.
LoL only kidding. Good luck getting him!!
Dave is already getting permission from your neighbor to hunt that deer :) . Cool deer
Lmao rob!!! Dave's more than welcome with a permission slip to come hunt my area whenever he wants!! And he knows that!! Just let me shoot this guy first..lmao!!
Cool buck. Good luck with him.
Swk I searched high and dry for his sheds. Come the rut he disappears. But before he does he shreds up every three beyond belief. He bounces from thick pocket to thick pocket. Finding them would be about impossible. Ya so my plan is to set up the blind tomorrow and only go back bi weekly to check the mineral.
Great deer - good luck for sure! I'm excited about your experience chasing him... Good luck Shawn.
Give him space here... and be ready to go Sept 16... (it's private, so I guess you could hunt him the 15th). He's most likely to be there doing those things then than after. Fingers crossed!
All the more reason to get your bow dailed in..GL!!!
Good luck Shawn, make sure you check the camera everyday and pee on the tree where your camera is hanging to build up his tolerance to human scent so he’s easier to kill. Good luck
Your an ass rob!! Lmfao!!
This younger 8 point has been hanging a ton in daylight. He will get an arrow his way to. Seeing how I didn't get a deer last year the freezer is starting to show.
Dude a lot cheaper and less time going to stop & shop to fill the freezer :) .
O boy last time I joked about shooting a crossbow on here I gave ten people a heart attack. Lmao!! I'm definitely getting the itch.. those pics are super nice to see.. gives me hope.. rob I could only imagine what I've spent on each deer I've killed. Shit what ive spent isnt 100th of what you have. And that's a "being nice" number..You got me on one trailer of corn. lmao!!!
Haha, venison ain’t cheap :)
(Hey guys, someone's wife might be reading this!)
Don't listen to those guys, venison is practically free. And if you let him go west, elk is really like getting paid to hunt (a lot of meat for just several thousand dollars invested). All you have to do is buy your spouse a bunch of hunting-related related items (no worries, just get him a gift card, get a part-time job if you have to). In the offseason, you should encourage him to fish a lot (fish is very healthy), and remember, buying a boat will help the family food budget shrink to near zero. Of course, he needs that big four-wheel-drive truck, it's for the family!
If you plant a big vegetable garden (and maybe some fruit trees) the family will eat healthy organic food, and your kids will probably eventually even start helping dad hunt and fish. Oh ... you should probably learn how to can and preserve stuff, and maybe also how to sew, homemade clothes are so much nicer than those expensive store-bought ones.
See how easy that is?
(it's saracsm guys, no nasty PM are necessary)
So very very true guys!!!..I used to go with a girl that loved high end shoes, made that Marcos chick look like a pre schooler..she would come home and show me her new black shoes, great they look like the other 20 pairs of black shoes she had!!!..there was probably 20 grand worth of shoes but she busted my balls for spending 10 bucks on eels..lol some where sexy as hell but work boots , shorts and a wet t work for me!!!..lol
I'd stay out of there until Halloween. More likely to slip up. I like using Doe in heat scents and they have been very productive. Good luck
Guns and arrows this is my plan. I'm heavily baiting now until opening day September 15th. I'm going to hunt it three days in a row, the 15, 16, 17th. If I cant get him then I'm staying out of there until November.
Why would you stay out of there until November? Hunt the wind as long as the wind is right and you can hunt and you are getting picture of that deer you hunt him . You are getting daylight pictures of that deer which means you are in his core area as long as he keeps in that area he can make a mistake any day. I’ve hunted as many as 27 days straight until my target buck daylighted . Why limit yourself to November when he can get pulled away by a doe in heat 2 miles away? Study your trail camera data and if he is there a lot early morning I wouldn’t hunt mornings early season and take a chance at bumping him out but outside that you hunt him until you kill him
Rob very well said. I'll be there opening day and the days following without a doubt. I only got him in the day 2 times and now it's all nighttime pics and hes still cruising with the young ten point. I'm just gonna keep throwing bait and just pray he makes a mistake. 27 days in a row!! That's what I call dedication!
Yeah big mature deer don’t get big by being dumb and walking during the day you gotta put your time in a hope for a mistake. The one that took me 27 straight days never daylighted on câmera in 3 years of pictures he would show up nearly everyday 30-40 minutes after sunset until he made a mistake , big deer might daylight only a few times during the season . Given the amount of bait piles we have in zones 11+12 for a deer to make it passed 4.5-5.5 they not hitting bait piles during the day often . Good luck
I guess it just goes to show we all have different approaches to hunting. I prefer to leave my prime areas alone until just before the rut. I'll start with some still hunting just to check out the area for any changes, new trails, scrapes, etc. I'll freshen-up scrapes near my stand locations, place some EverCalm on the trees nearby, and make sure my shooting lanes are clear.
Once the season starts, I rarely hunt the same spot 2 days in a row, and I don't shoot the doe so they stay around to attract the bucks. And the wind direction always determines which stand I'll use. My experience is that bucks you never saw before will come to the doe once the rut is in full swing, so I don't try to pick one buck over another. I'm just looking for that old boy that made a mistake. Have fun Shawn, don't make a job or you won't enjoy it. :)
BBB if I recall you hunt bigger woods in the northern part of the state no baiting . All depends on where you hunt and how the deer are conditioned with the amount of exposure to human scent. Urban deer are much more tolerable to human scent and I truly believe you can condition deer to tolerate scent to a certain degree to benefit you while hunting, it’s all about what they are used to in their daily routine.
My blind is literally 25 yards behind one of my buildings. I obviously know the tenants well and when I'm at my blind I can hear them clear as day. Also I could smell the food they were cooking on the grill. The area is very suburban and human scent is everywhere. They are obviously accustomed to it and hopefully that favors me.
