Agreed, except I'm thinking it's the top of a hoof. You can see the nose and the nostrils so I'm thinking the deer is facing the camera coming down from a bound and it's the top of the back left hoof of the deer.

YES upper left. I'm bassackwards.
"Thing" is upper left would be 5-6' off the ground. Camera in on a 10" dia white spruce with weak branches. I don't think it the branches would support a deer if it climbed it.
