While scouting some land yesterday I found a couple oaks dropping acorns. Only two but that's a good thing to me. Anyways... at the base of the oaks there where all these little pieces of the acorn shells about the size of corn. I didnt find any whole acorns just all the little pieces. Was this caused by deer or rodents? I dont remember seeing pieces of the shell before. They were all over.

Fairies

Could be either, but thats a guestimate. Watching deer eat acorns, you always see chunks falling out of their mouths and can hear the popping of the nuts. Rodents often just carry them away...

Most likely squirrels

Ya I'm thinking its deer. Why would a squirrel make them do small.

Definitely squirrels. They'll sit in the tree and drop the trash on your head, see them in my yard all the time doing this.

Yes definitely squirrels. They gnaw away at the nut covers with small er mouths so the particles the drop are smaller than deer.
