Have you looked at and played with NMDG&F new interactive map, of all the current years unit-wide tag receivers property locations? This!!
Amazing! I never really believed that this would come to fruition. Can't wait to peruse this in detail.
Well I'll be damned. I bet a whole lot of LOs are going to be surprised now that you can actually access the info.
Feels kinda like Christmas, doesn't it!
"That map is wrong."
"NMDGF provides spatial data as a courtesy for general location purposes only . NMDGF makes no warranty and assumes no responsibility or liability for the accuracy, timeliness, completeness, or suitability of this data for any particular use. (check).
Although I'm a bit miffed that you have to select "NMDGF isn't responsible for this information...blah...blah...blah" to access the map. WTH? NMDGF negotiates the ranches, land, tags, etc. and then states that the information they provide may not be accurate?
They aren't responsible for reporting or showing property boundries. That info comes from county assessor sites and the landowner's "testimony" from their application.
Huge step in the right direction only took almost two decades. Make sure you still contact the ranches to find out the type of access they're allowing. Wish they were required to put that in the gnf contract. Bummer to find locked gates and have to hike a few miles to still access public areas while the private tags drove in. Maps are dream come true though.
The rules are that those who hunted the property with the LO tag that got to drive in, the same applies to public ground tag holders that hunt the property.
I agree on contacting the LO to check and at least let them know so when a nosey neighbor reports you it's not a surprise.
If a notarized copy of a deed is “testimony” then I will assume they own what they claim. Every county minus 2 has info on OnX you can use to back up the G&F supplied maps. There is no need whatsoever to contact the landowner in order to hunt.
Nosey neighbors may not know the rules and who wants to waste time explaining it to local law enforcment when they get called unnecessarily.
Agree though you are not required to let the LO know you will be hunting.
Some of those properties are small and if you don’t kill the elk on the LO’s ground you need to hunt down other landowners to try and get permission to track it plus the law says you can’t shoot within 150 yards from a dwelling or building without permission from the owner. A map is nice but some of those properties aren’t worth it IMO. Can’t park within 300 yards of a water tank without the owners permission.
What a joke! Further proof E plus needs to go bye bye......
It's a step forward for sure but has a ways to go, I am one that doesn't think there should be interaction between the hunters and LO's, some hunters can be untactful in their approach and LO's could curb access by not answering the phone and manipulating who gets through, it's just not a good idea, these participating properties should have unfettered access. I would like to see allowable access routes included, to access some of these properties you may have to cross non enrolled private land to get to the participating parcel which means you need to contact the rancher to find out how to get to the parcel. There should be zero hoops to jump through and super clear access stated so that there are not any issues with people wandering on parcels they are not suppose to be on.
Are those tag numbers for the ranches correct? 20 freaking tags for one ranch in 16c with less than 2500 elk acres??? Theoretically speaking, that's $100,000 dollars!!! (only two were antlerless) Holy shit.
Game and fish needs to sale those tags as a premium tag for 5k a piece after the draw, and give landowners half for depredation. They only "own" half of the equation anyways, the land. Game and fish can use the other half for more elk habitat endeavors.
...the law says you can’t shoot within 150 yards from a dwelling or building without permission from the owner.
The EPLUS contract the landowner has with NM G&F is your permission. Have at it. If they want any of their ground excluded it will be reflected on the map.
Dogman I don’t think so.... 150 yards from any dwelling or building. What makes E plus property any different? Yeah, you can hunt their land but I’m sure the the 150 yard law applies.
“Unit-wide private lands are open during each public elk hunt for the sole purpose of hunting elk. They are not open during any other time of year or for any other purpose. Hunters are allowed free access to unit-wide ranches. If vehicular access is restricted on a unit-wide ranch then it must be equally restricted to all elk hunters throughout all public elk hunt periods. Unit-wide ranches are not open for camping. Scouting may occur two days immediately preceding the start of the hunt during legal shooting hours.” ...18. I acknowledge that criminal trespass does not apply if a person is in possession of a landowner license transferred to them by the owner or person in control of the land (30-14-1-A (2); NMSA 1978).
Take a look at some of the maps, keeping in mind that they are what the landowners provided to G&F, giving hunters permission. Lots of examples where the landowner excluded their buildings, and plenty where they included them in their mapped acreage.
An extreme example: 6C, 2 acre UW property. You can’t get further than 120 yards from the building across the road. If you couldn’t hunt it G&F can’t issue the landowner the permit.
I thought the 150 yd thing was state law. If it is, it would trump the EPLUS language.
You got a point there DM. I’m going to call a CO I know next week.
I could shoot five feet from the building. The law states "to discharge a firearm within 150 yards of a building.....". I don't think my bow counts as a firearm.
Not sure why anyone would want to hunt anywhere a house is visible. But hey......I guess they call that hunting too.....
This is a nice addition...thank you
Well, I have already used the map to my advantage.
