When northbound got a puppy from me he noticed my Apple trees and I showed him some of my grafts of apple scions to apple trees. A few months later during dormancy we did a scion exchange, I gave him 5-6 varieties in exchange for a few Granny Smiths as I had never done those so far. Well, I grafted onto a Red Baron crab apple in my driveway so I could keep a close eye on it. These are the results after 3 1/2 years. If anyone has a crab apple tree in their yard and want some apples, this is a quick way to get them opposed to starting a tree from scratch.

That's well done Trapper. How many scions did you graft onto that tree? Was the grafting done during winter dormancy?

Thickeness of branch after 3 years.

Happy, I only grafted 1 Granny Smith but I typically graft 10-20 trees a year with other varieties.. Not during dormant season but just when buds are swelling and we have a 5-6 day forecast of temps in the 55 degree range or above.

Kinda embarrassed the tree those scions came from didn't make that much fruit. Dam work gets in the way of tree spraying all summer

That is really cool! I’ve read about it, but have never seen it. How difficult is the process? I’d like to hear more about it.

^ There's neverbait again, mad and jealous that others have the time, will, resources, and ambition, to do something other than sit on their computer hating and being jealous of the world.

Slicer, if you don't have the time then don't read it. Yes it is that simple. Plus if you are reading this you must have opened the tread again, now why would you bother to do that if you don't want to waste time.

I need to use the internet to learn how to graft. I want to do similar to what Trapper did to the one mature crabapple tree I have. I have never grafted but would like to learn how this winter. Since I bought my land, I've added around a dozen fruit trees and will continue to do so.
Love this thread! So much to learn from others on bowsite.

Apples are so dense on many of my trees that I already have a few branches that broke from the weight. I did cull some apples out early on but obviously not enough up higher in the tree. Just love to pick and eat one as I walk past any of the 3 trees that have ripe apples.

Happy, go to YouTube and search Fruitwise grafting. I love his accent. LOL.
