This weekend was very slow in north central Colorado for me. Nothing talking, moving etc... The heat probably didn't help. 80 degrees at 9,800 feet. Anyone else have a slow start? What is everyone seeing as far as rut action?

It was very quiet where we were in NOCO, but there was plenty of action. 1/2 mile away and you'd never have known. Lots of elk hit the dirt.

the above pic shows me in a tree stand along the tree line with wounded bull after hit, passing trail camera.

because of the warm weather I hunted over a wallow and killed this bull at 9:06 on the second morning. See the whole story on the ELK conference, titled, a Senior Moment, Part 2

Just a weird start to the year. We have been successful on bulls three out of the last four years. Found what most people call a honey hole. There are at least 6 wallows/water holes that we know of, and none of them have been hit at all. We will have to move around and find them. We go in about 2 miles, and have always been in elk within a 1/2 mile of that. So far this year there isn't a single fresh rub along with the wallows not being touched. With the wet year we have had in our area there is probably plenty of new water/wallows that have probably been dry in years past. Put on some more miles and find them.

3 bulls down one cow. Hot but bugling actually pretty good.

A lot of rifle bear hunters every down here. A lot of bowhunters also. Outfitters complaining about the the way some trucks are parked at the trail heads.
Two lil bulls we let go, ain't gonna kill a rag horn or a cow. Seen three good bulls still running together for now. Small bulls with the cows, they are the ones making most of the noise.

Lots of bugling in Wyoming on opening day, ONE other hunter on the whole mountain. No elk on the ground yet, but I am holding out for bigger than I already have.
