Does South Dakota get harvest numbers for deer strictly through the surveys they send after the season? I am so used to registering a deer in mn or wi after the kill at a registration station, on line or over the phone. Thanks

That is where the harvest projections come from.

Mnhunter, Yes, survey's. Unfortunately, SD hasn't "seen the light" on mandatory and immediate harvest reporting like many other states. When I've suggested it (several times), they always say too manpower intensive and costly. I counter with online or telephone system check ins ala Illinois etc. I can't imagine an online telecheck/phone system would cost that much and it would be immediate and precise. I know in Illinois I had to call that day, tell them the sex, maturity and county harvested. It gave me a number to write on my tag/license to "validate" the legal harvest. Very precise and impressive to me. Sure wish we'd implement that here for precision management.
