Anyone know what went down regarding further bgss issues and expanding limited units?

From what I understand, for the next 5 yr Season Structure.

1. Plains deer Season ------, bow, ML and rifle to remain the same dates IE, STATUS QUO. There was a recommendation to move the Rifle deer Season to an earlier starting date in OCT. but that did not receive approval.

2. Early Season for archery, approved dates, Sept 2 to Sept 30th. a 29 days season.

Archery elk, deer and bear will all start on Sept 2nd. ML rifle will be STATUS Quo. starting the second Sat in Sept for 9 days.

Archery elk will remain Status Quo, ie, mostly OTC and then Limited Draw as currently presented. Except that some units in the SW that have had low calf elk recruitment will be adjusted for low cow harvest (all manners of take) and-- bull elk harvest only-- as data is provided to support the management goals.

Changing OTC units to Limited draw. Usually this is accomplished at the start of the BGSS and not during. NOW, there is a provision to allow CPW staff to present to the CPW commission, recommendations to change OTC units to limited draw DURING the 5 yr BGSS as data, studies, etc, may indicate.

So.........The sky didn’t fall?

While behind the scenes there was more at stake that might reduce bow hunting opportunities, more than one might believe; Yes, the sky didn't fall mainly because the CBA was present at all of the Commission meetings and testified in behalf of its membership to (the best we can) Our Mission-- protect our current opportunities while at the same time, trying to improve them. My best, Paul Life Member of the CBA

“Yes, the sky didn't fall mainly because the CBA was present at all of the Commission meetings and testified in behalf of its membership“

I am sure that is so true. We owe them a big debt of gratitude.

So, if September 2 falls on a Saturday, does that mean ML will start on the 9th?

As a guy that likes to hunt mule deer in velvet,,, it sucks... great dates for elk guys...

Kelly, the CBA proposed to have an Aug 25 opener for deer prior to the Sept 2 elk opener. While a few of the CPW biologists saw no issue, the Commission only supported the bear, deer and elk season to start on the same day.

Too bad the commission didn’t go for earlier deer start

From: Glunt@work

Tying the start dates to the bear start date (which came from legislation they didn't want) is arbitrary. The later start takes away from the quality of deer season and losing a day takes away from the quality of deer and elk season.

Number of archery only days - 0.

Every single day of archery season has a rifle hunter in it.
