Shaving During Hunting Season

OK...I know many many guys just don't shave during hunting season. I'm not that guy. .
My electric razor finally died and am using this as the opportunity to go back to regular shaving. My concern is scent from the shaving cream. Can I just shave the night before and then shower with baking soda in the morning to neutralize the shaving cream scent?
use unscented shaving cream, yes it exists, google it. I only shave (around my beard) about once a week, year round
I think the deer could care less about scents like shaving cream. Human scent is what they don't like
Propane torch and you’ll have a strong cover scent!!!
I don’t shave on a hunt, but I’d think that a shower... or a few unscented baby wipes would take care of it. No one is scent free anyways.
No hunter can ever eliminate all the inherent and extraneous scents carried into the woods with their person, clothing, and equipment. All we can do is to try to reduce the potency of those we cannot eliminate,...and this is very large task! Whether or not we are even moderately successful depends on our efforts and how conscientious we are. Personally, I believe we will never be 100% scent-free and can only give it our best effort on any given day. Probably the best advice is to not hunt certain stands when the wind is wrong, be aware of naturally occurring morning and evening thermals, know that even the slightest whiff of our contaminating odor can alert a deer to our presence,...and then, of course, to hope he approaches from the upwind side! Good luck to all.
Hunt the wind and use your hipster / millennial beard shaving balm all you want.
Or just be a man and grow a beard. Like a man.
I have never used shaving cream in my life. Take a shower and shave while the beard is soft and wet. Done.
Beard wearers are the hipsters Dirty Mik. Not sure what the point of your comment was.
I'll give that a shot DT, thanks.
It's pretty simple. I don't know if your manbun or craft cocktail got in the way.
Use all the smelly girly stuff you want and just hunt the wind. Because deer are going to smell you regardless.
Or grow a beard like a real man.
Good luck to you this fall.

Is Dirty Mike on the left or right?
I'm assuming the "left"

I real man has enough self discipline to shave, get regular haircuts and also doesn't talk random crap to strangers on an internet forum.
tweed... what did your mother do to you that has you believing hair grooming choices are dictated by level of manhood?
I suppose that same question could be asked of Dirty. I'm just playing his game.
Figured this is what this thread would turn into.
you make your own reality
Just for the record: My joking comment about a propane torch wasn't random crap. It was focused crap, in a cordial way.
A quick moving torch does a great job of eliminating stray hairs on your deer quarters, but might be problematic to control on your face. Nose hairs being especially problematic.
Short bloodtrails.
I haven't shaved since 1982.
I have to shave for my job. Maybe when I retire I will grow one.
Ya, I have forgot to shave for a few years.
Same here oleduckhunter.
I liked your comment Orion. I believe that's how the Turks shave.
Edge makes a non-scent version of their shaving cream. I think it's in a purple can. Then simply wash up in a non-scent soap.
“I haven’t shaved since 1982.” Buck Watcher, your beard is as old as me :)
Finally some real men who grow beards like God intended, and not millennial hipster posers. Bet those guys don't sleep on organically sourced artisan cotton pillows or only eat free range hormone free boneless skinless chicken breasts because bones in meat are scary.
It is not name calling if it is true!
That's probably why manbun shaves. Too much poop in his beard.
I hate a beard, although I consider well-groomed beards to be beautiful. It itches terribly, and a lot of dirt collects in the beard. This applies not only to the beard but also to other parts of the body. I can't stand the armpit and pubic hair. I always shaved off all excess hair and tried to be smooth. However, those damn hairs grow so fast that you must shave almost every day. Now I started to actively think about laser hair removal. I even found a
Beaulaser laser hair removal clinic to get the procedure done. I wonder if any of you guys have already done laser hair removal. Does it really work?
Ive seen alot of dumb threads here. Maybe even started a few myself. But this one takes the cake. I find it odd a man needs to shave baby face year round.
pour some irish spring soap in the woods and watch how deer react to the scent. they hate it.
How come you placed Irish Spring soap in the woods?
I don't shave and my beard smells of Grizzly wintergreen after a few days. How the hell did this thread come back from the dead?
Things must be really slow. Shaving!! Some on here still think you can beat a deer nose. NEVER! This is the dumbest thread yet
May not be able to fool a deer's nose, but you can certainly stink more, and also stink less. I would think that human glands stink to high heaven, and our modern day noses which pale in comparison to a deer's, know our balls, feet and armpits stink lol. All said, I shower before every hunt, and wash my clothes every 3rd hunt. I cannot with scientific evidence prove that I stink less to a deer than say Body Odor Bob, but my observations tell me I'm far less threatening than so many others who act as if every deer downwind of you is impossible to kill. It's simply not the case in all of my experience. Of course I play the wind, and so do deer, but I'd be a fool not to keep my eyes peeled on the other 180 degrees of hunting that is downwind of me. If I can get just one half second more time, before a deer heads off, then I'm going to try and be clean. Clean being the proverbial word, because what is actually "clean"?
Good grief With all the technology in the woods no need to worry about scent anymore unless your mentally challenged
It's your breath Pete. Bird dogs track and flush birds by following their breath scent. You can look that up. Most of our scent also comes from breath. 100's of cubic meters of breath expelled by humans and any breathing animal. You have experienced it many times smelling someone's foul breath odor and we can't smell zip compared to a deer.
Trickle, I talked to you before about this. I hold my breath during the entire hunt. Seriously, my breath is the last thing I worry about. You should smell my feet!
Sacrilege: Shaving is just that. ;-)
It's your arm pits Pete. Your feet smell like doe in heat. Keep your boots off! And socks. Lol. This scent thing with deer drives me nuts. People are making a fortune getting hunters to believe their products will make our scent zero to a deer. Never happen. Some guy gets a big buck using some scent free product and thinks that's why. Recreate the set up and all it was was he had the wind and thermals in his favor
So do you do any scent preventative measures or just slip on your hunting cloths and go hunting?
Hunt the wind and sometimes the wind does not even matter.

I haven’t used a electric razor or shaving cream in decades.

Mjf I hunt the wind. If it isn't in my favor I don't even pull on the clothes. I also like morning best as thermals are going up. If I hurt evenings in it's totally dependant on the wind and thermals. If I can get the thermals to pool in a low area like a open field I go for that. I'm also really picky about where I walk in and leave. Most stands I hunt only once and maybe again 7-10 days apart. I keep calender notes and I always see more deer by a long shot on the first time I sit a stand. After that it lessens with each sit.
Trickle I will ask the exact same question with a little twist, besides always using the wind to your favor do you use any other scent preventative measures before you go out hunting?
Not to a extreme. No scent products. No ozone thing. No scent free soap no gadgets. Just common sense stuff. Keep my gear in a outdoor shed or hanging in a back porch away from household odors. I do wear knee high rubber boots and am very careful not to touch any branches etc going in and out. I know just from dropping skin cells moving in and out I'm careful with the route knowing I'll leave a scent trail no matter what especially mornings when it's damp. I also try to move in unobserved. Those mature deer can see you coming and going pretty easy. They bed where they can view downwind. They seeing you is just as bad as getting busted by their ears and nose. I said this before in here. Deer do 3 things. They bed. They feed. They breed. And always looking, listening and smelling.
They watch their backtrail too. Before bedding they do a j hook or semi circle back then bed. That way anything following their trail will be seen or heard or smelled. I'm talking 4 + year old Deer. They are a totally different animal. They look up alot more now too. Danger from above is a conditioned response. When I hunted Canada several years the stands were 10-12 feet up. In some areas they really had never been hunted from stands much. All ground hunters. I noticed they never looked up to bust you. There was no concern to look for a blob in a tree
