These scum suckers need to go down! The bull was shot with a rifle prior to the start of the archery season and not recovered.

I’ll say. It was to be my wife’s primary target as well, but he disappeared in mid August. Now we know why.

Pisses me off to no end to see this!! The fact that the antlers were not taken makes me wonder if an anti shot it so a hunter couldn't take it. What a beautiful animal.

Actually, it's not uncommon in some states. Utah used to have a lot of this until they simply changed the law that you cannot posses dead-heads. Poachers would kill a trophy animal and then come back for it once it's fully decomposed. They then claimed to "find" the antlers while hiking and try to either sell them or try and enter them as a 'pick-up' into B&C. Wouldn't surprise me if this was the case here.

Not saying it never happened because it probably did but I never heard about this with elk. On the other hand, I have heard it many times and for a long time about coues deer bucks. Guys would shoot (poach) them, hide the horns and then retrieve them later as a dead head. Pretty sad & pathetic what a few folks will do for glory.

Probably tougher to do with an elk due to the chance of someone else finding them. There were all kinds of shenanigans associated with this bull though. Trailcams stolen from the area all summer, tire tacs in the roads nearby and in general horrible behavior. Someone wanted him bad enough to take him illegally.
