JR, they are inadvertently picked up in the grass that they eat. Not on purpose

It's weird it doesn't effect the deer.

Deer appear to have a high degree of natural immunity, probably because they have had it who knows how long . Most deer carry the worm then pass the larvae on the ground. The snail/slug ingests the larvae and acts as an intermediary host to the larvae then are eaten by elk while grazing
