2020 Controlled Hunts
Oklahoma

The application period opened today and runs till May 20th. Some interesting changes to Elk and some new hunts for deer and turkey. Good luck to all those applying.
no MCAAP turkey. Can’t see too many exciting options for my 10 turkey points....
So I guess the first hunts listed are the traditional Elk hunts and the new ones are no help from them but you can have a helper in the field? Maybe I’m missing something. Wonder if the new “walk in” hunts are as good as the traditional Wichita Mtn hunts.
When I open the application as an individual it says I’m not eligible due to party size. I guess the non hunting partner applies with you on a party application? Not very clear.
Definitely could use some clarification it makes it seem like you have to apply in a group were both would draw. But clearly states "a non hunting partner" does the party leader get the tag? I plan on calling this week and seeing if someone can explain it. No being driven in and dropped off, no pulling a truck or 4 wheeler close to help get one out, and everyone having to park in one or two access points. It's our own Colorado experience.I think it's a great idea for a well prepared guy with a good and equally as prepared friend. But I wonder how many will get in over there heads and then probably be upset that they waisted their once in a lifetime chance, or worse elk will rot in the field. Hopefully the ODWC makes it work it would be nice to see some increased opportunities as long as the elk herd stays healthy. I'm interested in the Wichita walk in Turkey hunt at the very least it would be a cool place to hunt not sure about the turkey population on the NWR.
What most won't realize is the amount of effort to break down an elk and pack out of the field if even a short distance(less than a mile). How many have frame packs? How many know how to debone in the field? How many can actually carry a 70-80 lb pack that 1 mile then go back for 3 more trips? How many will bring their deer cart only to cuss at it on the uneven terrain? Yeah, the Colorado experience at it's finest!! :)
Be aware of the Elk walk-in hunts. WMR Your non hunting partner cannot put in for another elk hunt even though he is not hunting elk. (just a packer)
Wow, okay and thank you for the info.
Better be a real good friend or family member preferably one that owes you a big favor. So I assume that sense you have to have a partner to apply if your partner bails you don't get to hunt? Be very interesting to see how many apply.
Yep,
You will need to find a non-elk hunting partner to use for a pack mule because he will not be able to put in for a Elk hunt in his lifetime.
This is not a good deal.
Odw should have put this info in the regs.
That's very odd! I don't think I have any "non-elk hunting" friends that would want to do that. I have plenty of hunting buddies that would go as a packer, but not if that means they lose their opportunity to put in for the elk hunt in the future.
Yea, I’d like to see the look on my brothers face when I suggest burning his 20 points to be my pack mule... who in the world would do that? Sorry but this is just stupid unless we are all reading it wrong....
I emailed them yesterday just to clarify and the response I received was both applicants get to hunt and also each get a non-hunting partner.
Here is the last im i got from ODW .
For the walk-in elk hunts, both applicants are the hunters. Non-hunting partners can be determined by the successful applicants after the draw.
Sure glad somebody from ODW cleared this up.
Any idea if non hunting partners are allowed in field or stay back like the other hunts? Oh yea, and thank you all for looking into it further...
That makes a lot more sense. I'm down for that!
It also looks like those walk in hunts are almost a week long.
what date are results posted?
first week of july usually when results r posted
Check your accounts boys it's started. Looks like no turkey or elk for me still pending deer draw. Looks like my father in law drew a elk tag.
Yea it started drawing this evening. Son drew Salt Plains again... if only I was 13. No elk or antelope. Like you, waiting on deer....
Wouldn’t have even looked but he got a random email saying he didn’t draw youth turkey. I told him it must be a glitch then my cousin text me. Checked and he got lucky again.
Wife and myself drew a Deep Fork NWR archery permit for the month of November. It's close to home, so a change of pace will be fun as well. Anyone ever hunted the refuge portion of Deep Fork?
Drew it twice I think many years ago when it was separate categories for deer. Saw a lot of deer. Up until now, you could go down in September and get a permit for a two week period in November. I did it once but never made it down there. I know a guy that did that every year while they were doing it and he killed some nice deer.
Congratulations guys! My father in law drew the January 5-7 cow hunt he is pretty happy. Rick I like how you get basically all of November with that tag.
zip here again. I wonder just how long it will take to draw a turkey hunt. 17 points and counting
Unless they put MCAAP turkey back on there, i wouldn’t lose too much sleep.
I drew a mcapp hunt this year it’s been about 8 years sense my last hunt there. It used to tell you on your permit what area you drew do they do something different now cause all it says on your permit is mcaap. Any information is much appreciated.
Larry... apparently there was a bit of a hitch between the ODWC and MCAAP. I saw this yesterday...
Things seem a bit off this year. On par with everything else.
Thank you for the info EmbryOklahoma I just hope we get to hunt there this year with all that’s going on. I also drew the year 9/11 happened and they canceled the hunts after the first one that year.
No elk hunt in OK for me or wife.
I really appreciate the youth choices they have. This will be my son’s fourth deer hunt in five years. A lot of fun!
So I get an email today that says sorry you we’re not as lucky as you thought lol. They have cut down the number of people in the Mcalester hunts and i was not lucky enough to draw again and my hunt has been moved to 2021. So with this happing am I allowed to apply for hunts again next year ??
Postalblue, that is a good question. Post here if you find out as I have some friends in the same situation. I killed a hog one year and got a quality pass and I applied next year but that is outside of the draw process. I just didn't apply for the same weekend. I didn't draw so it didn't really matter but I got the preference point at least. This is also for your whole group so may or may not apply. Keep us updated.
I put in for all of the different hunts but never got picked. Back home, I put in for the Maine moose hunt for 16 years, never got picked for that either. Guess that's why I don't ever buy lottery tickets or go to the casino. Lol.
