Those that hunt it may get 500 more acres to roam in the future as it looks like KDWP&T might be making a play for it in FY 2021 at approx. $1.1million ($2,200/acre)....price seems a tad high too me though. Anybody hunt BW? Good or Bad feedback?
I bird hunt it occasionally. It gets a lot of deer hunting pressure. They did a fall burn last year and completely ruined the grass habitat for birds
Oldest son killed his first buck there. We have killed a lot of game there over the years and Troy has managed it well for birds in my opinion.
Got a buddy that's killed a turkey there almost every year. I hunt waterfowl near Cunningham on the Ninnescah, and every time I drive by there are trucks all over BW from every state you can think of. Additional acres means additional trucks.
At least no failure piles are allowed there!
$2,200/acre doesn’t seem that high. I don’t know the area, but a lot of land is way North of $2k/acre around here. Recreational land is usually $2,500 or more as is marginal farmland and pasture. River bottom duck land is going over $3,000.
Excellent farmland is pushing $4,000.
For recreational/pasture in that area, I wouldn’t pay more than $1,800/acre for it....and at 500 acres that would be a $200K savings overall vs. what KDWP might pay....but then again they got all those NR deer hunting $$$$ in their pocket and I don’t?
What 500 acres are looking at getting added? I personally believe the state should buy all recreational ground possible.
Wish they could, Matt. Some years they can't even take land that's offered to them because of, drum roll, please, the legislature.
If you think he managed it well for birds last year Matte, WTH did you find them with half the WA burnt to the ground?
Fall and early winter burns are a great tool for creating quail habitat, but since it takes out winter cover it's generally recommended that you don't burn more than a third of your habitat acreage on any given yr. I don't know the area in question... did they burn more than a third of it last fall?

Matte...open the 2 Adobe .pdf doc’s in the attached link. If you know surveyor talk you could probably walk right to the 500 acres. Looks like in late-May it died in committee but I bet and hope KDWP&T keeps it on their agenda so folks have more access to public lands.
Fall and late summer burns are the best way to kill sericea and brush. 80 percent kill is even better than chemicals, without the same range of problems.
Double post. Stuttered as a kid, too.
I will try it this Fall, I am tired of spraying Remedy and then planting more wildflowers. Thanks.
The cattle also help the quail out as well.

My understanding when talking to one of the KDWP commish guys, they have to show that they can pay property taxes on the land they purchase. Another words they cannot take anything out of the tax base. I had started a thread on that issue a few years ago.
It is the state....if they really want said property bad enough they will figure out a way to get/purchase it....or cook the books in order to do it.
Or maybe they'll quit their jobs as Biologists, build a meth lab, and start a chain of fried chicken restaurants
Yes, exactly what all the teachers throughout USD 259 (Wichita) will be doing soon. (Per inside source) the school district is bankrupt and will be closing a bunch of schools over the next few years. As a result, the district is purchasing a bunch of laptop computers now district wide (while they have funds) so the kids affected by these school closures will be able to still participate via “on-line” school instead.
On-line elem./middle/high school will be the future....and they will get their electronic diplomas e-mailed to them. Crazy!
Gonna be a bunch of “blue sky” on the streets soon being made by a bunch of Capt. Cooks!
danish - you are correct.
Crested - It's like pulling a hedge tree up by the roots to get the legislature to OK a purchase. They've had to let some sweet deals slide by, like that Circle K property out in Edwards County. Mule deer, huge whitetails, great quail, killer dove spots. Lots of lesser prairie chickens, though they obviously can't be hunted now.
Kyle...you been watching Breaking Bad reruns?
