Football in Kansas

I was just thinking a lot about football today cause my boy 2 a days started up this week...Matt is Kody playing this year and what position? Also wondering since I haven’t been to a game up there if high school football is a big thing up there?
When I was up there a couple weeks ago me and this older gentleman got in a conversation at a restaurant and I could tell he had passion for it how he told me how both of his boys was on a team that won state back in the 90’s. I really enjoyed having that talk with him and made me realize I should have been going to some games while I was up there so much the last few years. Thinking about watching some games this year up there.
You realize the best JUCO ball in America is here? If I was a regular visitor, I’d try to find a high school 8-man game and then find some of the good JUCO games to hit. Unfortunately, Coach JB isn’t at Independence anymore. Watch Last Chance U if you have no idea what I’m referencing.
High school football just isn’t a Texas thing. You all pride yourselves too much on it. I went to college in Texas and people were surprised that it was “a thing” in Kansas.
Good points on the 8-man. Go to a good JuCo game and you’ll probably see some future D1 and even NFL players. “Our Boys” is an outstanding read about the legendary small town coach Roger Barta and his years at Smith Center. Highly recommend it!
That’s very interesting Michael that you mentioned Smith Center. I got on the computer the other day and seen where Smith Center had put together a good run and doing it again here lately. Definitely going to read that about “Our Boys” and probably going to find myself trying to catch one of their games this year.
Also didn’t know there was such a thing as 8-man until that old man up there told me about it. Down here the real small schools play 6-man. I might try a Juco game just because y’all recommended it but my heart is in small town football....even down here I don’t enjoy watching the bigger high schools play as much as the smaller ones....something about seeing the stadium lights of a highly contested small town football game and knowing you’re about to be there puts goosebumps on my arms.
8 man football is quite a bit faster than 11 man. Lots of fun to watch a running back or receiver break away into the open field (or quarterback for that matter). Juco football in KS is outstanding! I used to watch a lot of Butler games, now I catch them on the radio some. Speaking of juco... find your way to a basketball game also, they can be awesome!
Read "Our Boys" many yrs ago. Probably should read it again, good book and great story.
Barta was my 8th grade math teacher, before he headed west. Special guy. The way he helped Smith Center is amazing. One of the first coaches to address the dangers of concussions with a “better helmets or we don’t play” mentality.
No doubt there are tiny towns all over America who’ve had their own version of Barta.
Get the book. Think I read it 2-3 times. Written by a guy from NYC who moved his family to Smith Center for the year. changed him and his wife.
Yeah I like watching basketball as well. This is all very good stuff to hear because here in about 5 yrs or so I would like to spend most of September through December up there but at the same time I know I would be missing Friday nights down here.....but it sounds like just maybe Kansas has something to offer in that area.
Look into what Kansas has contributed to basketball...obviously Naismith coached in the state, but some of the sport’s best coaches - Dean Smith, Adolph Rupp, Eddie Sutton, Jeff Jones,...
Nice thing about Kansas is you’re hardly ever more than 30 miles from a ballgame on a Friday night. In September and October anyway. I’ve been in the mood on a few Sandhills trips, but sometimes the closest one I can find is 100 miles away. Finally made one up there a couple years ago after tagging out and having a night to kill. I’ve hit a couple out in western KS on pronghorn trips. A buddy and I were staying in an eastern Colorado town when they wrapped up a state 6-man title a few years ago. They won the semifinal in town our first Friday and the state title the following Saturday in a neighboring town. We missed the games unfortunately, but partook in the celebrations at the local water hole both nights, which were a good times.
Bestill, kpreps.com is a nice site for following football in Kansas. It has all the schedules and scores every week. Should be easy to find a good game close to you most Fridays.
Cousins were on those Smith Center teams. Have a Jr. At Maize high. Generally one of the better 5a Schools. He just keeps getting bigger but needs to put on 30# before college for a D End position. This is a sophomore photo. Wish i knew how to post videos with this phone.
Thank you Kaleb...I’ll check that out. By the way you have killed some really nice animals and the way you have done it is pretty impressive.
Thanks! Not sure where you’re hunting, but if it is close to Smith Center, the rest of that NCK corridor generally has some good football. Osborne is often one of the best 8-man teams. Beloit, Philipsburg, Norton, and Plainville can have pretty stout clubs, among others.
The Caney Bullpups and Sedan Blue Devils are my hometown teams, and they’re usually both pretty good. Worth a watch for anyone visiting SEK with a Friday night to spare.
Can’t miss the races at the Caney Valley Speedway, either!
Amazing this country is in such a pickle with the chinese infiltration and the main concern is a damn game. It's just a game folks so what if it does not happen this fall.
Yeah Smith Center and Osborne is within driving distance of where I hunt. I so wished I would have known about this the last 3 years up there...for some reason I didn’t think people really cared about football up there. Aw come on Davey....There’s nothing wrong with getting a little excited about some football.
I might add though y’all have one of the best college football teams in the Wildcats. I always find myself rooting for them against anybody else besides Baylor. A class act team with great fans and coach Snyder was just a straight up man.
Calhoun, we’re red blooded Americans! Football is just as important here as it is in Texas, or any other state. ;)
Just missed the glory days of Liberal Redskin football. Coach Gary Cornelson left before my senior. Im a firm believer we would of won state that year with him. Salina Central won state that year. They beat us 21-19 on a failed two point conversion to end the game. Remember it like yesterday.
Matt Shook your son looks like a good player....with him just being a junior he could definitely get bigger. Exciting stuff right there. Matt Davis it sounded like y’all had a good team and that had to be a heartbreaking loss.
That was the beginning of his Sophomore year. He is a little bigger and faster so they are moving him from Strong Safety to D End. It will be interesting to say the least as he always played awesome at D end since the 3rd grade.

Sad thing is a kid that Kody played Jr Football with who was a great, great running back blew his knee out again and his football life is over.
Oh that sucks for his friend like that...I hate it when they get hurt like that. Yeah Kody already has a great build for a kid his age...hope he has a fun and great year. My oldest is a junior but he quit playing after his freshman year. Sad thing too cause in middle school he had a heck of an arm....his first 8th grade game he threw for almost 200 yards with 3 or 4 touchdowns but the 2nd game after he caught the 1st punt and on the return when he got tackled he broke his wrist really bad. Had a bad experience at the hospital. They didn’t deaden it right and 3 or so times with the doctors twisting and tugging trying to get his bones to match up....after that I think he didn’t look at football quite the same.
My youngest is a sophomore and he’s still playing but like his brother....his birthday is late summer August 24th so by age he should be a freshman. Hope he sticks with cause he is used to being a running back but our football team has no line whatsoever. With him being young and us having a solid group of older kids that is running backs and receivers they have him starting varsity at offensive guard. He doesn’t have offensive line size at all at nearly 6ft1 and 145 lbs. Him and another kid are in a battle for starting D-end and like Kody I think he likes that position though. He’s a tough kid but we’re about to find out how tough when them older running backs start pounding that line.
When is his 1st scrimmage and 1st game?
2021. It is curtains for all 2020 organized football from Pee Wee/Pop Warner thru College. Get ready, NFL games will be on Saturday too as they will take over the vacated college broadcasts this fall.
Will not watch nfl or any pro sports except golf
crested, last I heard local games around us are still on, from high school down; as a matter of fact, there are multiple practices tonight in Caney for kids' rec league football. Did something change yesterday?
KSHSAA has not canceled any sports yet. Everything for the fall is still on track unless a local district has made changes on their own.
The only other youth program that I know anything about right now is MAYBE basketball... and it's been going strong all summer long.
Yeah everything is on schedule down here. County health department tried to move the sports back and succeeded for a few days until the attorney general stepped in and said they didn’t have the power to do that....that it was up to the school district so we’re back to starting normal time.
Dr. Cameron Wolfe, a Duke infectious disease specialist, told Sports Business Daily that doctors have learned enough over the past six months to manage the risk.
"We believe we can mitigate it down to a level that makes everyone safe," Wolfe told The Daily. "Can we safely have two teams meet on the field? I would say yes. Will it be tough? Yes. Will it be expensive and hard and lots of work? For sure. But I do believe you can sufficiently mitigate the risk of bringing COVID onto the football field or into the training room at a level that's no different than living as a student on campus."
NCAA just announced football and all other sports will be postponed. Good news for KU, they will not lose a game this Fall!
Not really the beginning of the end for the antiquated NCAA, but it probably will be the end of the end for it. Good riddance! Just might be the beginning of the end for some universities though; the same universities that have been fleecing people for years. I’m tempted to say “good riddance” again!
My apology, it was the Big Ten only. Being an Ohio boy though, that is all that matters. Should just crown the Buckeyes Champs as they would have walked away with it anyway.
Big Ten announced yesterday I believe.
Habitat for Wildlife....OU players dotting the “O” at Ohio State....Hee, Hee!

KSQ....I am not aware of any changes....just my thoughts on where I think organized sports is headed this fall. Hope I am wrong because I love me some college football.
Cherney....can you open your institution or school to possible future litigation and law suits if just one kid, coach, referee (who routinely blow into their whistles) or spectator dies as a result.....I would say YES especially with this sue happy country. I have no doubt some will try to play organized sports with reduced schedules this Fall. However, I would hanker a guess that at this point the majority won’t. Who knows what Spring 2021 might bring....possibly a second straight year of no NCAA Basketball Tourney? We all made it through not having a Tourney in 2020 what’s another year just to be safe and possibly have a USDA approved vaccine by mid-year next year.
Did I say I love me some college football? Also, I might also be a member of the College Football Playoff Committee and thus have inside info that others don’t?
Look out for Crusty Hat coming to a stadium near you during the NCAA College Football “Spring” 2021 Season!
OU 31 OSU 16. Cheated....Yeah right, Ha, Ha!
Fear of liability is a large reason the NCAA is keeping quiet.
Not to seniors in college or high school. Many spent there young lives building up to that last season. Now for many of them they may never play again. Would be similar to knowing this upcoming hunting season was going to be your last hunting season, than it's taken from you.
“It’s only game,” is exactly what these KS folks in 1953 said to old man coach Bill Snyder (pictured on the right side) who is looking on and patiently waiting for the Tornado ripping through their town to exit the city limits so he can get down to business and ask them about where he can find their small town football star? Who knew Bill was old in 1953 too?
Matt Davis you are spot on.
Boomer!
Where's Crustedbutt?
Not much better than listening to a k-state game on the radio... then getting home in time to see the last 2 minutes.
2nd half was something of domination - offense, defense and emotional. Got inside their helmets.
Fun to watch, even for a KU fan.

At least we don’t have to watch OU embarrass themselves again at the playoffs this year. Prolly be 3 or 4 SEC teams....:-/
Meanwhile ,on Planet Lawrence, we’ve again gone from “this is the year we win some games,” to “this is the year we should see improvement,” to “...they’re going to have 10,000 fans in the stadium at the next home game.” How much are they paying the other 7,435 who would not be there, otherwise?
I’m a KSU grad. Buddy of mine that lives in Fla called this morn and razzed me about KSU getting beat by OU. I said, “Ken, did you turn it off early,” he had done so, with OU up by 21. I had the last and best laugh.
Lol, talking trash backfired on him! Should have watched the whole game, or at least checked the box scores before sticking hit foot in his mouth.
Yes, it’s just a game. I was there when they were terrible, or worse, early 70s. Nice to see such an improvement.
It has been an interesting on the high school fields. Not knowing from week to week if the game is going to happen and reduced crowds. Kody has been killing it at D end on a top ranked 5a school. We hope for all the kids to stay healthy on and off the field. The kid just keeps getting bigger as im 6'2" #265.
Gosh dang he is getting big....I bet he is killing it there at that position. Good time of the year with football and hunting going on. I was up there opening week for hunting and I finally got to catch the end of an 8 man game up there....I loved it.
Cats are starting to purr again.
Looks like the cats are choking on a furball. Tech just took the lead in the 4th. They looked good until now.
Edit: Cats just scored as I was typing this. Hopefully they can hold the lead. 24-21 10-minutes to go.
This game is so complicated no one understands it, WHAT THE HELL IS TARGETING/////
Smith #7 is laying em out
And little man knows how to run....that’s game.

Am I supposed to understand what It game means ?
It’s a relatively new rule Davey....a rule to try and keep the players safer. They don’t make em like they used to....probably in a few years we won’t have tackle football. It will be touch....hell the Jayhawks might stand a chance then. Ha kidding Jayhawkers...well just a little.
Dave, if you scroll up you'll see that your posts read "It's just a game"...and then "It's just game"...
and so, I got to thinkin....hey, maybe this is some kind of cryptic puzzle? Well I think I've got it solved Dave
I got to admit....that was pretty dang clever. That one went past me....but I’m a little on the slow side.

Why in the hell is it posting twice
I will watch the Chiefs but other than that I won't give the NFL my time. Nor college football. They want to make hero's out of criminals and support an organization that donates 6 billion to the democratic party. No thanks.
I tend to agree Jeff. I pretty well only watch the Cats and Chiefs now days. This BLM kneeling BS has really soured me on sports.
I caught your humor, Kyle, which should worry me. :-)
I'm so glad you experts have explained what the hell "targeting" is, thanks.
I might have to leave the Hawks camp and it has nothing to do with abysmal football or NCAA investigations. I’ve made the mistake of venturing over to the Phog politics board......yuck. I’m a pretty tolerant fella, but the level of blue state anger in that crowd is mind boggling! You can’t say one conservative word without being nailed with vulgar stupidity. There are a few sane people there, but they get shouted down relentlessly. It’s pitiful and eye opening.
Now you see why we hate KU
Maize 6-0 ranked #15 took down 6a Defending Champs #3 Derby last night. Kody had a hell of game. First time since my two boys started playing at Maize 5 years ago that we have beat them.
Matte...score looks like game was a nail biter or did Derby get a late trash can TD due to Maize being in prevent D?
Actually it was not as close as the score. We should have been up by 6 and we had two tds returned on fast option plays they called a holds on. Here is Kody killing it in the end I dont have the official but 3 sacks and 9 tackles. He beat their tackle 90% of the time. The other kid was big but as Kody put it slow and not real strong.
Congrats to y’all beating....good pic of your son and by those stats he did have a monster of a game. Good luck the rest of the way.
Guess I need to figure out who wants a free year membership to the KBA. Cats are favored by 18.5
KU just lost their only star, opting out the rest of 2020. Can’t hardly blame him. The story is he is going to take care of his mom, but there’s probably more to it than that. The way they are using him this year, it was only a matter of time before he got injured anyway. You don’t run a 170 lb kid up the gut constantly.
Well Cherney, get a name for me..... sigh. Money well spent anyway.
I’ll let you know soon James
I’ll let you know soon James
Hey James, let's go with Chris Zach. He's been a rifle hunter all his life, but I've been working on him to get a bow and I think he will this winter. KBA can help him get acquainted with it. Thanks for honoring your word. Maybe next year they'll pull the upset! I'll have him fill out the application.
Sounds good Patrick. Let me know when he mails it, or is ready to and I’ll get a check in ASAP.
Patrick, did Chris get his form sent in yet? I don’t want to send the check until you’re sure he’s good with it.
Sorry, James. Just saw this. I'll ask him now and let you know.
62-9....really was 62-3 if not for the trash can TD given up at games end. Should have never fired Mangina!
You're taking some kind of credit for beating KU? C'mon man
A win is a win....especially when starting conf. play at 0-2. Now won 4 in a row and the last 2 in dominating fashion. Moving forward now not backward like some who have lost 2 straight. Crusty Hat...out!
I’m just glad OU won’t embarrass the Big 12 again in the playoff this year.
He sent in his application James
James....you and your beloved KU will be OK in the long run. Will end up in your rightful place in Big 12 conf. football standings along with KS Aggie. Now that is embarrassing. Don’t be mad but if needed here’s your cape anyway.
Sorry Patrick, I just saw this. I'll get the check sent in today!
Crested you know nothing about the firing of Mangino. Makes Greg Marshall look like a cupcake.
But, never should have hired Gill or Weis.

Six in a row, baby! Like always Big 12 Championship runs thru OU.
Writer, why did they fire Mangino?
Hung half a hundred on em! Yeah Baby! 2021 season is gonna be a another good one for the Sooners!
Have to admit, seeing SEC get beat is nice, even if it isn’t the top of the SEC.
Nice to see K-State's "mitches" win that game!
