Hi all, was wondering if anyone here knows the legality of harvesting freshwater clams, mussels and snails in New York State for food purposes. Is there a particular season that’s best? Are any or all of them protected species? Also which bodies of water are on the safer side to collect them from in terms of being less polluted? Thanks in advance for your help!

Not legal in NY. All are protected and you need a DEC permit "for the collection, possession, or sale of the following species for education, exhibition, scientific research or propagation (breeding)." In other words, collection for food is never allowed, even with a permit. See link for more info and rules for saltwater species.
