Looking to go on my first shed antler hunting with my dog in training this spring. I know colorado law doesn't allow it until May 1st. My question is will there even be any/many left by that point? I know a lot of critters eat them. Anyone have experience looking for them after May 1st? What has your success been like?

Do people really wait until March 1st to start there shed hunting? Gimme a break by March 1st many have already been picked up. Nobody is enforcing that. It’s a joke!

It’s ridiculous but I don’t want to be the first one to get a ticket.

That's for public land. And CPW has done stings with big sheds that they micro chipped and caught guys getting them early. It's a big money "hobby" now, with dog chews going for $30 a pound.
Go out east and ask permission on some private land along riverbottoms, and you can start whenever they start dropping.

@jaq... that's a good idea
And I too think it's a bit silly of a rule. But the logic does seem sound in regards to stress and pressure on the animals.

It is somewhat enforced where I live. Also a good rule where I live, the area gets hammered and animals stressed.

You can thank the goobers from Utah who created a scene on the west slope for us having shed seasons now, I'd be shocked if the rule is followed much though...

I’m not questioning the importance of the rule but rather questioning the integrity of selfish people who break it.

I've found elk sheds during the next hunting season that were missed by the squirrels and shed hunters.

I would guess the hardcore guys will be out shed geocaching soon and then retracing their steps to collect when its legal.

I have these two mule deer bucks tied to a tree and will then collect their head gear when the shed season starts :).

A few guys here were caught last spring picking up sheds and stock piling them till the season opened. Seems the local fish and game guys are catching on pretty quick to these guys that are out "just walking" in wintering areas. Good for them.
