Stump shooting

I had a discussion with a friend on stump shooting recently. For those that don’t know what it is the practice of walking around the woods shooting perfectly good arrows at stumps in the woods. Lol. I never understood it when there are easier target mediums that are much easier on arrows. But people don’t. I’ve read and researched and just can’t find if it is legal or not in WV. I can see me explaining now to the CO that I’m not hunting out of season officer. I’m just shooting stumps. There is no mention of it anywhere I can find. What do you guys think? Seems it would be an easy was for the good ole boys to be afield when they are not supposed to.

It seemed to be popular in 60s and 70s when Most people were shooting recurves instinctively. It helped people learn how to judge unknown distances. It never made much sense to me because of broken or cracked wooden arrows and having to dig or chop your broadhead out of the stump . There’s much better and easier ways to judge distance without destroying your arrows

You use blunt tipped arrows, and if you are a bit careful you can pick the stumps that are pretty soft. Ferns and plain old dirt clumps work too. It's my favorite archery activity. And groundhogs are always in season along with skunks, and possums. :o)

I always thought you could not be afield with a weapon unless there was a game season open that had opening and closing dates. Not just animals like groundhogs etc that have open seasons. Seems to me it would be easy to lie and say you are coyote hunting. Lol

Yes, I just checked the regs again. I had checked before and there is no season, bag, or season limit on those species.

I choose odd colored leaves and/tufts of grass. Usually just shoot field points, and always with a recurve or longbow. I hate it when I shoot at a “different” colored leaf and find it’s a rock or fresh cow pattie. ;>)

JR, go hunt as many stumps as you want. It’s only illegal to carry a gun in the woods during closed season. Per Colonel Jenkins

I shoot leaves in the field and grass clumps. Best practice there is, still do it with my compound.

Will do.

Will do. But I was wrong and my buddy was right. He has been stump shooting and I told him it was illegal. I’ll stick to hunting the deer

One of my favorite things to do in the woods! I asked at a sectional meeting about it one time many years ago and was told it was fine to do so.
