Remington Accutip or Federal Copper 20g
Massachusetts

I'm sure this has been posted... just picked up a Savage 220 slug gun. I know the ammo is very scarce... Looking for a few boxes or Remington AccuTips or Federal Copper Solids... 20 gauge... or any other ammo sabots for this gun. If anyone comes across some let me know.. or better yet pick some up for me I will come grab and pay immediately! ;)
Does anyone have an idea whether this ammo situation will get better or worse ?
I did see that the Remington factory reopened... hopefully that will get things going again...
It will get better from what I’ve heard from a few reps. Particularly the federal rep. It’s just gonna take some time to catch up.
Oddly I saw some Remington handgun ammo for sale on Midway. I didn’t expect to see Remington of all companies so that’s a good sign.
Sweet gun, good luck on the ammo. Should be able to shoot it in 22 ;) he he he kidding!
Just checked Midway and Target Sports and no ammo, looks like you have a nice paper weight now Ungie.
Paper weights sell cheap no spike? I’ll give ya 50 cents ungie. I’ll go as high as $2.50 haha
I found some brenneke rifled slugs they said they did work w rifled bore.
Also, hit up Walmart on lunch and they have 350 Legend, 25/06, and two boxes of 28 gauge shells unreal. Damn I knew I should have kept my 25/06! And a 350 Legend AR upper sounds good right about now ha.
Cabelas Sunday had 22-250, 25-06, 204 ruger. Gonna have to get little rocket gun in order to have something to shoot
I drove to Kittery for 20gauge slugs. 1 pack of 5.
I think it will definitely get better. Just think, it was only a year ago that unicorns were more plentiful than toilet paper...
" I drove to Kittery for 20gauge slugs. 1 pack of 5. "
Was that all they had in stock or was there a purchase limit?
And has anyone been to Cabelas in Berlin lately? Any ammo there? Hour+ ride, and I don't absolutely need anything, just wondering.
Dana my report was precisely from there lol. Don’t waste your time
The website said they had 2, but I only found one. They also had 12G so I got my allowed 5 boxes that day.
Glad I use a muzzleloader during shotgun season plenty of ammo out their for that. Beats up the shoulder less too ha
I let my PA buddy shoot my 870 last year one day. Wanted to shoot a doe with a shotgun. He bout blew his nose off his face when the comb came up and watched him. Lol. Said he’d feather shoot his 300wsm. Those 3” slugs punch
I've been to Cabela's in Berlin a handful of times in the last 2-3 weeks. They always have ammo but it's always some obscure caliber that I've never heard of, and even then it's typically only a box or two. The stuff MA-PA mentioned is about the most recognizable stuff I've seen there, maybe that and a box of 220 swift. If you're looking for something more common save yourself the trip.
I'm thinking of just getting a sling shot and a big bag of marbles. Of course if that idea catches on we'll probably end up with a shortage of marbles...
I shoot 3 1/2 inch magnums out of my 12 gauge 870 for turkey season. hammers me.
Ungie, my shoulder hurts just reading that. You should be able to find those, you're probably the only one who wants to shoot the damn things...
I have five boxes of 3 1/2 inch magnum’s that I’ve been picking up periodically. I also have two boxes of 3 inch . The only thing I cannot seem to find is the 20 gauge Sabots. I have quite a bit of ammunition in general other than this
I used to use the 3 1/2 turkey loads and had two tons come in and somehow I missed easy shot the turkey jumped up like 5 feet landed back on the ground I racked another shell and the spent shell got jammed while ejecting out the hole it was so long. I since moved down to 3” for that reason not to mention I patterned many loads from 2 3/4 to 3 1/2 inch and actually found the 3 1/2 to pattern the worst of the bunch. Just food for thought.
I shoot 3.5s too ungie. Kaboom!
"Dana my report was precisely from there lol. Don’t waste your time "
Nick, sorry, didn't catch that. Last time I was at Cab-berlin they had a mountain of clays and not one dam' shotshell. ;-) They had 7-08's but for the price of one box of 20 I bought 100 bullets for reloading. They didn't have powder but I'm good for now.
Anybody been to Bass Pro in Foxboro or Cabelas in Hartford lately?
"Despite seemingly clear explanations I'm paranoid..."
There's a saying that 'paranoia is its own punishment.' I personally laugh at 'conspiracy' theories because they all ignore a fundamental of sound thinking known as 'Occam's Razor'. (Simplified version - the simplest explanation that fits the facts is most likely to be true.)
When you start 'factoring in' guesses and wild ideas and paranoid conspiracy theories, you don't get closer to some mysterious truth, you just tie your brain in knots.
Think about this - Walmart has almost 5000 stores in the US. If they get a trailer loads of ammo every week, by the time that gets spread out, it amounts to a couple boxes per store. And bet on it, Walmart has first dibs on all the 'popular' ammo - their buying power is ten times Bass Pro's or Midway or anyone else.
And if I know just one thing about Walmart, it's this - they never , ever leave a dollar on the table.
I didn’t say where it was I don’t think Dana. No need to be sorry. Was just letting you know so you didn’t waste a trip!
DC, pardon me, I'm doing more thinking than Googling.
Dana Triggered me. Conspiracy mindset, literally, destroys people. That stuff is so frustrating.
Ok, off the ledge.
3.5's are BRUTAL. I tried them years ago. I'm happy it was a short lived thing. It's like shooting a donkey...
Will, you're right , we don't need conspiracy theories to destroy people when we have open borders, Supreme Court packing, suppression of free speech in college , politicians and their son above the law et al. When we have all that who needs a conspiracy? Why help the poor in Appalachia with their economic and drug problems when we can dole it out to illegals and put some up in hotels.? Let's ignore our own and be goody-two shoes to create a voting constituency that insures future power.
Will that’s the best analogy I’ve ever heard. I saw some 31/2” 10 gauge last weekend at pelletiers. Made me wanna buy a 10 gauge chambered in 31/2” to try em out. They were like 85$ for 10 tho. tss loads
one of my local stores has a box of Winchester Supreme 10 ga. 3.5"... i can't even imagine the kick! My 870 shoots both 3" and 3.5" very well. I'll finish up a box of 3.5s that I have had for a bit this season and then maybe go w/ the 3's for a bit.. We'll see how the season goes.. the past 2 have been slow... years prior epic in MA & NY..
Wholly crap - 3.5 10gauge! That's crazy. Shoulder fired gravel cannon is what that is!
BD - there are a gazillion conspiracy theories to choose from that fit. 5G, Microchip, Vax-Autism, Keto/carnivore diets, Carbohydrate-Insulin model of Obesity, on and on and on and on and on. The alphabet one is bad too.
Ungie I’m debating hitting NY. Definitely gonna make a PA weekend I think and obviously gonna hunt here as well. Wouldn’t mind a few out of state birds for the freezer
Ma-Pa , In the 60's when I was stationed in Va. I bought a 10ga. ,3.5'' double gun made in Spain. I used it for goose and deer hunting. It was barrel heavy as you would imagine and had tremendous recoil but delivered a payload. They used hounds to hunt deer and all shots were running so most used buck shot. All were local farmers and great guys and I enjoyed being with them but didn't enjoy hound driven deer hunts at all. When water fowling there was a tendency to take long shots which resulted in too many cripples IMHO. Give me a 3" 20 ga. o/u over decoys.
I hear ya big dog. After I had my 338 for a little while we went to the range with it and my friends girlfriend wanted to shoot it. She owned that thing at 115 pounds soaking wet and a whopping 5’5” frame. Kid next to us was talkin smaxk when she went to shoot and asked if he could give it a rip. Naturally I of course said yes. It rearranged his face pretty good. It was hilarious.
And no pictures. Darn!
A couple years ago I bought a 45-70, and had it at the range. A couple women I know wanted to try it, so I let 'em. (Both these gals are 60-ish and not very big.) The guy down the line was chuckling, but these two women each shoot a case of 12 gauge trap loads a week. They were hooting out loud ;-)
Will, you're a good man. I hope you can see that conspiracies imaginary or real are the least of the problem.
I was laughing to hard to sneak a picture haha. Then cleaning the scope and stock from the blood shed hahahaha
3 1/2" shells give you a few more pellets and a fat lip ( or a sore shoulder!)
And some more power bow hunt! Lol. And it makes a bigger boom. Deafens you a little longer if ya don’t have the ear plugs lol. Ringing goes away eventually tho. Once you get to the bird usually
MaBowhunter, I know the feeling well. Next time you practice try draping a thick double folded towel over your shoulder (no joke) ; it absorbs a lot of the recoil. When shooting at game it's less noticeable and ,hopefully, it's only one good shot. I traded my 3.5'' 10ga double when I bought a Rem.1100, 3'' 12ga and never missed it. The automatics today absorb even more recoil than the old1100. Have you checked out some of today's 20ga turkey guns and the new loads, amazing out to 40yds. Have a wonderful season.
My shoulders looked like that before. Originally sighting in the 338 then realizing the scope was kaput. Couldn’t get it zeroed. Then again my buddies 7mm mag. Before we invested in a lead sled
MA-PA what the hell you hunting in MA that you need a 338 or 7mm? Geez lol. Nothing beats small and fast for deer like a .243 or 25/06
Some of us dream of elk and bears ;-)
But I would like to find a Ruger #1 in 25-'06...
Spike I got the 338 for a song from some desperate guy at the gun shop one night. He was recently kicked out by his wife and hurting for cash. So I figured hey I’m single. Have cash. I’ll buy it. Lol. And my buddy had the 7mm mag from his moose hunt. We shot deer with em tho in PA. Long as you don’t hit the shoulder your good lol. Otherwise preground Hamburg. That was a neck shot kind of day.
And like Dana said. The 338 was for the elk bear moose dream. I do want a 243/2506 for next year tho. Maybe the year after seeing I can’t get ammo for it currently lol. My buddy and his old man actually slay them with their 22-250. Like 4-5 guys we hunt with down there use them
I've been on the lookout for a 257 Roberts and/or a 260 Remington also, but even if I find them ammo is gonna be an issue. I expect to see 6.5 Creedmoor on the shelves before either of those rounds as well. *
Planning to buy another 7-08 since I have plenty of ammo and components for it. (With 120 grain bullets it's a hottie, but I want a longer barrel on the next gun.)
*Yeah, I know you can form the Roberts from 7mm Mauser and 260's from any of the 308-base shells. Still...
Ma-Pa, I love the reasons you use to justify the guns you buy. The .338 is a dream hunt gun and I hope you get to live that dream.
Dana if your into reloading check out the 257 Creedmoor. You can readily buy 131 grain Ace Black jack bullets. Just a neat round and it’s BC is insane that is IF you have a long range rifle range to shoot it.
.338 wildcat calibers for crazy long range play toy. I rather bow hunt.
I think 338 Federal would be a great elk gun and won’t beat up your shoulder.
Yes 338 federal more forgiving on the shoulder for sure. And big dog I can come up with a justifiable reason to buy a gun at the drop of a hat. Just ask my wife ;)
Spike, it won't beat up your shoulder but you've never seen me, lol.
Ma-Pa, yes, you're gifted when it comes to rationalizing the purchase of any gun even a .50cal Barrett , lol !!
Eh idt that one would go over very well. Going to look at a snub nose 357 this morning. Smith and Wesson 640. 357/38spl
Spike, I can shoot out to 200 on one range and 300 on another. Doubt I'd ever shoot at a deer that far, but like having enough gun if the situation arises ;-)
Planning to work up some loads with the 150 grain Hornady ELD-X when I get another 7-08...
Dana go down to PA find a farmer who grows corn, he’ll hate deer. Trust me. Convince him to let you hunt and you’ll be able to shoot 2-3 hundred all day. I took one at 296 last year with the 6.5creed. Smoked her. One step and toppled
How to you feel about Hornady slugs? There is some available if you go on ammoseek.com
Does Ammoseek ship to MA?
Mathews, I've read a few reviews that said Hornady slugs tend to break up as they penetrate. I've used them (300gr) the past three years with excellent results and they seem a bit more available ; so I'll stay with them. What matters is if your slug gun likes them and if you make a good shot IMHO.
I’ve had good luck with accutips out of my brothers 220 slug gun. drives tacks
Spike. Ammo seek is not an ammo seller. It is a search engine for ammo sellers and ammo
You can find ammo on Gunbroker.com too. Unfortunately finding sellers who will ship to Massachusetts is still a problem.
Probably won’t help much, but LL cote had accutips only 1 box per customer though.
Cabelas in Hudson had accutips tonight. 20G 3”
Was in Vermont today looking at colleges with my daughter and I was able to find four boxes of federal 2 3/4” trophy copper Sabots so I grabbed them at least it’s something to work on until I can find the Remington Accutips.
Bass pro had slugs Wednesday as well. 12G and 20G
Was at an area gun shop yesterday, they had ammo, kind'a pricey tho'. Couldn't find the new rifle I want at the distributor, none in stock. Waiting on the next boat from Finland ;-)
From Finland? Sako or tikka?
I wish we had a Cabela's / Bass Pro out here.. .closest is E. Hartford... armpit of the state when it comes to that stuff..
Are accutips really that good? Seems like they're getting rave reviews from a lot of you.
Big dog I love em! Know a lot of people that do aswell!
Big Dog - they are very accurate in my Savage 220 - much better than any other slug I tried in it.
Agreed with bow hunt. I can shoot damn tight groups with them. Very very accurate. And hit very hard.
Thank you, I 'll give them a try since I'm out of slugs at the moment. I'll bet the old Rem. 1100 slug gun will love them too.
Ditto. Don’t shoot ‘em out of smooth bore
Thanks for the reminder, DC . My 1100 has a rifled slug barrel with cantilevered scope base holding an ancient Redfield scope. Like my 760, I won't part with it although my thoughts often turn to the 20ga ,220 Savage.
I read info online where Savage recommends Accutips for their model 220.
