My guess is the bigger one on the right is the mom and was hit first. The smaller one stayed around too long in a high traffic area and was hit thereafter.

Last week I saw two within a tenth of a mile on a state road in Middlebury. One was in half and the chest cavity was empty like a semi smashed it.
