Preseason activities on The Farm
Pennsylvania
Contributors to this thread:
Well, I am here on my good friend’s farm for our annual pre-season loooooooooong weekend! “Activities” may include, but are not limited to: camping out in the backyard, hauling rocks to the dam to “fortify” the outflow, moving ladder stands, cutting brush along field edges, widening UTV trails, fishing in the pond, shooting sod puppies, bbq-ing, enjoying “adult beverages”, sitting on the hill in the evening waiting for deer to come out in the big field, checking trailcams, sitting around the evening campfire, coyote eradication, enjoying venison cooked at least 3 different ways....................did I mention “adult beverages?!” ;-)
Forgot to mention checking food plot progress......................
Perry, that looks and sounds like a great time.....enjoy!
Thanks! We had more fun today.............we moved one of the ladders about 125y to the tree where I killed my doe and buck 10 min apart in my climber. We named it the “2D TAGOUT” stand since that was the spot where I “tagged out” in WMU 2D last year! ;-)
We moved Art’s stand 15y uphill from where it was and trimmed a few shooting lanes. It’s much lower than the 2D TAGOUT stand. ;-)
Also trimmed a few UTV trails
Found two ticks on me after that trip. Rut would not let me check him for ticks.
We’re close Art, but not quite THAT close! ;-)
Moved another stand today. Also cut a large tree across a UTV Trail. We were concerned about the way it was laying, so we went “old school” and used an ax and bow saw!
Also sat for a bit waiting for the groundhog to come out, but it started storming before it came out..................
I will be hunting hogs with the Pinehill Traveling Bow tomorrow.
That’s the rifle I won at the UBP DHP banquet Bob, so technically it IS Archery related! ;-)
Super jealous Rut nut. I’m heading down very very soon! If I could move down there I would in a heart beat.
I was gonna inquire as to what a sod puppy was, but you answered that question in a later post. You guys went “old school” on the big tree, using an axe and a bow saw, yet you’re trimming the trails with a hedge trimmer, from the seat of the utv, no less! WTH? ;-)
Horsthief…….. just be glad Perry didn’t try to show you his snakebite scar. Looks like you guys had fun time.
Nick- I asked Art to give me a “heads up” if he ever decides to sell! ;-)
Awesome. Thanks for sharing your adventure
T-roy- No scar from the snakebite- just a divot from tissue loss where it bit me and a big wad of scar tissue above it. ;-)
I was actually on my way home from Art’s farm when I decided to stop in Benezette for the overnight backpacking trip that went bad! He and his wife visited me in the hospital in Pittsburgh. : )
Yes- old school on the log and battery hedge trimmers for the briars and brush- that thing makes quick work of things!
Today was an easy day! Checking trailcams and fishing in the pond! : )
The trailcam revealed some of the work that was done before we got to the farm
And a little “R and R!” ;-)
And rut won the fishing derby this morning. Thanks for all of the help my friend.
LOL! Anytime! Thanks for the great loooong weekend! ALWAYS a pleasure to spend time on The Keefer Farm!(one of my favorite spots on the planet! : )
And interesting to say the least.

Get your bear tag!

Might turn into a nice one.
A better pic.

Plus, at Dan's new stand.

Another big one. 10 point?
Another big one. 10 point?
The work continues. I hope it pays off. Here is a recent picture. This is a 5 by 7, 13 point with a sticker on his right side that still has a little time to grow.
Looks GREAT Art! The Keefer farm NEVER disappoints! ;-)
Here is a set of triplets and their mom.
This guy had something to say. Should have had the sound on.
I saw that 10 point that is on camera 81 in person at 40 yards on Sunday morning at 11 AM.
Nice Art!
That buck is saying "LEAVE ME ALONE, I'M JUST A LITTLE GUY!" ;-)
Perry is back and we are at it again.
Got to Art’s right before dinner and a round of thunderstorms. After they passed we went out to see if any deer would come out into the big field.
Just make sure u keep an eye out on his tent art….apparently kids like to mess with him while he’s “sawing wood”…
LMBO Justin! : )
I think I’d hear the teenagers coming around here................they all drive ATV’s and side by sides! ;-)
We had 3 small bucks come out just before dark, but nothing of any size.
Was treated to a nice sunset!
This morning we hung 3 lifelines at 3 of the higher ladder stands.
We also pulled more sd cards and put up another trailcam.
We cut some small sapling stumps out on the new trail around the pond.
We also checked the widening of the “road” over the dam.
And the new “road” around the pond
We stopped at the pond to catch some bass on the way back to the house.
We picked a couple pears and even found some more galls under some oaks.
Then we headed inside to check the trailcam pics. I’ll let Art post the pics...................
I was wearing my good jeans.
Nice bear at another new stand location. I saw a nice 10 point run into this spot about a week ago.

He's the one I'm looking for.

Nice buck at a new stand location.
They love to wade into the punkin patch and stomp these open and eat.
Little buck was feeding on the sawtooth oak tree this morning, in bow range of the front door. 42 degrees here.
WOW! THose pumpkins got big!
I was outside shooting last night and the air was cool and it just smelled like hunting season! ;-)
46 degrees this morning. Chise and I set up 3 ground blinds and a tree stand, made a range visit and shot the traveling longbow today. Kathy fed us some stuffed peppers and zucchini noodles.
Dan and I spent over 8 hours today putting up life lines, bow hangers and trimming shooting lanes in existing tree stands plus installing another blind and a climbing stick/hang on stand. The total is 25 hunting spots over 120 acres. All spots were physically checked. Lots of white oak acorns all over the place. A great apple, pear and mushroom crop this year in the hardwoods. Kathy and I saw a bear not far from here in a swamp Thursday night. I will check our 7 trail cameras once more before her birthday (opening day). Our next project is to get everything on a pin map so Kathy knows where everybody is hunting.
Sounds GREAT Art! You guys were BUSY today! : )
I went out to shoot my bow at 3 this afternoon and there was a big doe under the chestnut trees eating.
