The yellow ones are the underside.

Found these in a usual spot while scouting for deer. I think they are sulfur shelfs and are edible. At least they looked like the ones I ate last year. LOL. They weren't there a few days ago. Found them growing on the outside and inside of a hollowed out tree trunk.

I was gonna say Sulpher Shelf but I’m not good enough to trust my identification without an expert confirmation! ;-)

I've just started learning the different edible shrooms in PA so I won't be much help.
Hopefully Jeff Durnell will see this and post, he knows his shrooms.

Laetiporus Sulphureus a.k.a. Chicken of the Woods. It looks like it might be a couple of days too old. If it's very soft and plyable, it would be great in soup. Fresh ones ooze liquid, they're the ones you want to eat sauteed. I brought a C.O.W. cream of mushroom soup with chunks of hot Italian sausage in it to the 5C hunt last year and shared it. I think Perry had some.

Probably be best that I don't go to the 5c hunt. I dont want to go through the hours of interrogation by the police.
Police,,, why are you the only one at the camp ground alive.
Me,,, I was the only one that didnt eat Bob's soup, really I was!!!!!

I could not believe I found these today and I am sure they were not there 5 days ago. They seem to not be too old or tough to eat too. Pretty sure they are sulpher shelfs, but I always check first.

You guys ever run into ginseng when out and about? I stumbled upon some while scouting last week but too young to pick. Filed the location away for next year....

There are people around here in Clarion County that hunt it. My great Uncle Ed used to row his boat across the Allegheny River and pick it on the Armstrong County side 90 years ago. I study the pictures every fall and look for it. I never have a trowel with me to dig it out tho when I find something that looks like it and it will not pull the roots out when I try to pull it out. I'm thinking it has to be dug out. I also have found some of the allegedly extinct North American chestnut trees here on the farm and nearby Venango County.

Probably. Just got two backstraps out to thaw tho. Only Chise for dinner tomorrow so its looking good for next weekend. Just read the thread again and there was a little oozing going on. I will saute them Saturday and freeze what we don't eat for dinner tomorrow. Yum.

Justin, Depending on how fresh. If they are fresh like in Jeff's picture, I trim the thicker centers for soup making. The thinner parts are great for breakfast fare:)
