Well folks, the Kansas deer season has once again graced us with its presence. The days are getting shorter, and the temps more crisp. Soon the leaves will begin to fall, and our dreams of rutting bucks will become reality. I pray that we all have a safe, successful, and blessed hunting season. With that said, it’s time to head out amongst ‘em, fling some arrows, and get some meat hung on the pole! Best of luck to all, and share pictures of your successful harvests here.

I could possibly be an earlier than usual, for me, participant on here. I’ll finally join the non-res hunter ranks this year. I’ve been invited to an all-inclusive hunt on a ranch in NC Nebraska. They are even going to reimburse me for tag and license. Just can’t pass up a deal like that. A longtime, good friend is fixing me up.

I’ll have to post pics of one of those we found. Our former farmer was a total slob and it was a sad sight to see. Coyotes ate him alive and it took awhile to cut him out of the fence where he eventually got tangled. You definitely helped him out.

Great morning, Frank. Funny how you’re “really lucky” year after year.

Curious what exactly you’re asking, Free Range?

From: Free Range
17-Oct-21
Question seems obvious Writer unless of course you are a dimwit then you might struggle.

17-Oct-21
Thanks Mike for the kind words.

Free Range, based on herd density, crop damage etc. I will take what the biologists recommend and my own observations support.

Maybe you know more than the biologists in my area? Do you know where my farm is located? If you have superior knowledge I will gladly take your input.

None of it will go to waste!

Just curious why I have never seen a post of yours congratulating anyone, including kids, but felt compelled to post such an “obvious “ question. Obvious to many is such passive-aggressive posts are why many quit participating.

But let’s not clog up a thread that is intended to be celebratory, start another thread if you so desire.

From: Free Range
17-Oct-21
I find it ironic when guys go to great effort to put in bait plots and habitat then say there are too many deer on the land. Ever think you are pulling them from a large area to your heaven patch? Never said it was going to waste. If you want to decrease the heard stop planting groceries.

17-Oct-21
Habitat, it’s not just for deer!

And yes, I am pulling wildlife, and neighbors, plural, combine efforts for the benefit of numerous species, not just target animals.

You worry about what you do, and I will do the same and not try and tell you how to manage what I have no knowledge of.

From: ksq232
17-Oct-21
Wrong thread free range, leave this one alone please. Seriously, we all need to get hunting, we must be bored or something.

From: TwoDogs@work

Good job Frank!

From: writer
18-Oct-21
Yup, that's me, not much experience with the English language...only published several million words.

Or, I was giving you a chance to explain in more detail.

We have kill plots, trying to get the deer on our side of the fence during hunting seasons. Our farm is classic Unit 19, with a lot of 5-20 acre "ranches" that don't want anyone shooting "their deer." We also have a hunting club to our south that starts putting corn out literally by the ton when seasons open. We feed them through the summer, then they're often gone to the neighbors.

Many years our soybeans get hammered, like last year, and we can't get to the deer easily as they come off the neighbor's, cross a county road and are on to our place. Hopefully not as bad this year because the chinquapin and red oak mast is great.

During and right after the drought we only took 1-2 does. Now, it seems like we can't take enough.

From: Matte
18-Oct-21
Writer, Just spent the day with my family up in Smith Center. I think they have 4500 acres among them and Rodger mentioned today they are not letting people kill does due to such a low deer population.

From: Habitat
19-Oct-21
Are the whitetails or muley?Wonder why the state still allows any muley does killed?

From: writer
19-Oct-21
Not a surprise, Matt. Lost a lot of fawning habitat and many places still haven’t recovered from the drought.

Frank, the only way to take a mule deer doe is with the either-sex “buck tags.”.

They want to have someway out there to counter complaining landowners, etc.

They use to have Mule Deer but now it is all Whitetail. I am not up there enough to comment on habitat change but they do keep wildlife in mind with their business model. Here is a snap shot of what most of their ground is like. Wooded draws, pasture and ag.

From: Catscratch

I've seen that pic floating around for a couple of years. Last week it was "in Minnesota". No matter when or where... it's kind of awful but I image it happens from time to time.

From: Kansan
28-Oct-21
I’ve seen that picture in years past, but I’m sure it happens with some regularity. Sounds like it could be a big mess for the combine operator.

From: TwoDogs@work
28-Oct-21
The farmers I know say that the problem exists when combining wheat or swathing hay. They say that fawns often do not move (as that is their first line of defense) and create a big mess when run into the machine. I would assume that healthy mature deer would get out of the way.

Alright I usually don’t post my deer but I messed up so bad yesterday that I feel if I tell the story I can heal quicker. Maybe somebody else will learn from this and be better off. Yesterday morning thought I would try some big hill stalking and rattling. The 3rd spot I came to was at the north end of a long draw running south. Further south there was a couple fingers off of it...good looking spot. Slipped up there to where some cedar trees was on top close to the ravine on the eastern side. Nearly dropped into it but thought better of it in case something was bedded towards the head of it. Backed into a cedar and sat down.

With a pretty stiff south wind my intentions was to do a short and just enough volume on the horns to pull something maybe halfway down the draw and then head further south and try it again closer to the other ones. As soon as I put the horns down and got to my knees cause I knew it could be up close and personal with the edge of the draw only about 20 yards to my right I heard a sound down in the draw like a deer pawing or raking trees softly. A few seconds later I spotted movement through the trees and on the other side a deer pops out. I bring my glasses up and see what looks like a big 10. He’s headed north and instantly I was thinking he was going to try and skirt the north end of the draw and come back east to get down wind of me.

Looked that direction and there was another cedar that could have blocked my shot opportunity before that happened. At that moment I couldn’t see him really so I stayed low and scooted around to the north end of my cedar where I could cover both spots. I guess he slipped back into the draw cause at that moment he started raking and hitting branches with more force.

Now I have rattled multiple deer in before but I can’t ever remember having what I think is a big deer causing a big ruckus that close but not being able to see him. Not sure if he was trying to work himself into a fight or he was already ready and he was trying to call me to get down there to him. It was pretty clear he was starting to lose his wits which in turn was causing me to lose a little of mine. Never good situation for wise decision making and that I did not when he had enough and popped out about 20 yards towards my left...the direction I was kinda originally facing.

Now I’m not making an excuse but with me wired up and seeing him slightly standing upwards on that hill looking my direction with them long brows he didn’t look like no young deer. He was looking slightly off of me at first but before I started drawing he was staring me down. Thought for sure he was going to run but instead of tilting my bow a little upwards I kept it level towards him and tried a real slow draw so only parallel movement backwards would be seen. It worked and I took just a split second to make sure everything was right with the shot and touched her off...he was quartering to facing me. One of the biggest mistakes in my hunting career I knew I just made though when I walked upon on him later where he fell on the other side of the draw.

I probably have no business rattling anymore if I can’t keep my nerves in check but the lesson learned from this is that if I ever do rattle again...I would rather take a few seconds looking closer and possibly let an old deer get away from me then to shoot a young one like this.

I hope this on nobody but in these types of situations it can go south pretty quick. It really hit me hard when I got to him and I had to literally remind myself that I had my family and a dog that loves me and was missing me back home. Had to think of the things I been blessed with and lucky in life which is a whole lot just to get myself off the ground and take out the knife. Moral of the story is for the people that spend a lot of time in this endeavor...all of the sweat, emotions, tears, and all of the other stuff. You know what makes you happy and whole so before you send that arrow or throw that lead just take a second more before you touch her off...cause you ain’t fast enough to bring it back.

Here’s a pic of the young one which I shameful of...took some weeds and wiped the milk off his mouth as best I could. Posted a few because some people thought he might be 4 but they’re just trying to be nice which is still too young but I know nearly for sure he’s only 3 which is terrible. For all I know he might be 2.

Don't feel bad. I was running short on deer hunting time in college once one year. I had missed a very large buck in the draw that I followed and flung an arrow at only to find out later he was 60 yards. I went back a few mornings later and rattled, only to have a forkhorn come crashing in. I was so excited, that I shot him anyway despite his size. He was good eating for a poor college student.

From: be still
06-Nov-21
Dave I hear you and it’s just a deer and in the grand scheme of things it’s seems real small but as a hobby I love to be out there with them. The few seconds I had of excitement wasn’t worth taking that deer’s life...I look at it this way. If I would have held off no telling how many seconds of excitement this deer could have given to multiple people in the next years. Not including his off spring later and them growing old to give excitement to my kids your kids and so on. Dang this deer probably hadn’t had his first real fight yet...I bet yesterday he was thinking alright maybe I’ll get my chance today to see what I can do. Man he looked pretty when he stepped out...alright I got to stop before I get too mad again.

Patrick it wasn’t the encounter I was ashamed of and yes for sure the meat will be really tender...I’m sure I’ll slice right through with just a fork. And Thornton I know for sure you know that type of deer with those kind of horns at that age is the type to let go. So wish it would have been a 3 legged 6 yr old fork horn with a one eye for me as well.

be still, I know exactly how you feel! There had been many times, even before I would climb down out of a tree, I would say to myself, what the hell did I shoot that deer for. It's not a thought that is very pleasant, and it is one of the reasons I quit. I had had my fill of it. There is an alternative way to enjoy the outdoors and bow hunting, only pursue the big un's, you know the ones that you would be proud to spend the day showing it off. I have no ill will feelings against anyone that shoots anything of any size, if they enjoy it and don't have that what the hell did I shoot that for feeling, then more power to them. I told this to one of my camp hunt buddies one night while dancing around the camp fire smoke. He came back and said, "damn I hope that what ever you got it ain't catching!

Be Still….why let woulda, shoulda, coulda, thoughts or comments overshadow the excitement and memories of your hunt. Those feelings and memories are real as you explained in your hunt re-cap above.

You strategized and orchestrated a successful set-up and harvest of a great buck. Yes, maybe he wasn’t an ancient 6 or 7 year old. All of us that have hunted along time have a few regrets or ground shrinkage stories. Don’t let that and “humanizing” a deer rain on your parade.

You hunted it, it gave you a great hunting experience and memory. Now eat it and go out hunting a doe or just sit in a stand. Just cause you killed your buck in early Nov. don’t mean your done hunting.

Glad to see that your season was a success!

Jason you can’t congratulate someone on a mess up and as far as strategy goes....I’m from Texas so I would be in piss poor shape if I starting trying to feel proud of how I kill deer. Now I know you’re just trying trying to make me feel better and I appreciate it. Chief seems to understand and he felt my pain. My brother and I took my son out today. We were following a creek doing rattling stops every 250yds or so. 1st spot nothing. 2nd spot a nice 8pt, but to far at 60yds. 3rd spot brought in a different decent 8pt, little to far at 40yds. He spooked off. While standing there getting ready to move again my brother spotted this buck 150yds our. Hit the antlers together and in the matter of a minute or so, he came to 30yds. Ethan made a nice shot. Deer ran off and out of sight so we just sat down to wait 30 minutes before proceeding to shot site. 3 different bucks came cruising by us at 40yds or under during the 30 minutes while we waited. Took up the trail and found him probably 75yds away.

My biggest buck to date! Lost about 500 acres of hunting ground last year, so decided to go to a family farm not to far from my house. Packed in all my hunting stuff plus ladder stick and a hang on stand roughly 3/4 of a mile. Picked a tree on the edge of a bean field near a fresh scrape. At 5:30 4 does enter the bean field, so I decided to rattle and by 5:45 he was standing 21 yards broadside. Between this deer and the Antelope I harvested I think the only way to top this year would be a muley and a elk in Kansas!

Wednesday morning I was about as low as a bow hunter gets. Had a set up where the wind changed to a bad direction. I should have bailed but you can guess what happened. Mature buck did exactly what he was supposed to and got down wind of me before I could get drawn. I know better (and probably said that to myself 1,000 times in the hours that followed) but didn’t act quickly and it cost me. I was pretty down but on the advice of my brother, regrouped and went to a new stand we hung a month ago together. He had sat that stand for the very first time a week after we placed it and tagged out on a nice buck. While headed to the stand I was still replaying the morning’s failure in my head and didn’t notice two does in a plumb thicket 30 yards from the stand and they flushed like pheasants as I got close. Another WIN for the stealthy predator… lol! I was cussing my lack of skill and focus as I tried to place the decoy out front and this time in the correct spot for the wind direction. I climbed into the ladder stand, sat halfway on the seat and was looking for a place to hang my backpack and bow to get settled in. Before that could happen a big doe jumped the fence and was going to pass right in front of my stand. My problem was the backpack I was wearing was hitting the trunk of the tree and I couldn’t get turned to my right and get into position for a shot. I managed to get an arrow nocked but couldn’t free the backpack no matter how much I leaned forward. Needless to say between the decoy and my commotion she didn’t stick around and headed north. I was really bemoaning my lack of hunting skills when I saw tines coming down the same trail the doe had used. The buck jumps the fence and is bristling up at my decoy. He’s going to be broadside at 25 yards in seconds. The only problem was I was still stuck by the backpack! I leaned as far forward as I could and forced it to slide across the trunk as I turned to my right. I got drawn as he was about to the decoy and stopped him. The shot was right on target and he crashed back through the fence and disappeared into the cedars. I had literally been “in the stand” for less than 2 minutes. It wasn’t a long blood trail, around 150 yards, but he ended up dying in a pond. Messy recovery and a wild day altogether but I couldn’t be more happy with the results. What an up and down roller coaster this passion is!

Congratulations to all who have been fortunate to fill their tag. Been awhile since I have checked in and glad to have the time now to do so. Love keeping up with everyone's stories. I was fortunate enough to get redemption on a buck I had a bit of history with. I have a more detailed story on my FB page, but I will save you the boredom. Short version is that I missed him after he provided me a chip shot at 17 yards after he worked one of my mock scrapes and headed to the other one directly in front of my stand. I still don't know how or what really happened but I can only think it was a trigger punch that didn't actually punch far enough. It caught me off guard and caused me to pull off of him and as I went to settle back in apparently set the trigger off. I was sick and luckily just shot under him and didn't wound him. Anyway, I hunted hard the next several days bouncing between stands and got lucky on a warm evening November 15th. I was able to make good on the 30 yard shot this time and he ran about 50 and fell on film. I was all but ready to write him off and hunting one exclusively isn't easy for me mentally. Good luck to all of you still after it and this was a reminder I needed that it truly can happen when you least expect it. Hunt smart and stay after it.

Thank you all. Jug, I have been using Buck Fever Synthetics since about 2004. I was never a fan of the urine based scents and found them more of a pain in the you know what. I have found this as a great tool but the biggest key is location. It's also paired well for me on other factors that make them the best scrapes possible. Most have turned into year-round hub scrapes, but I still like to bring in limbs from areas over 5 miles away if possible(preferably oak) and I wire tie them to the existing branches that inevitably get broken off in time. It's no rocket science method and I think the same results could by had by completing the prep work the same and allowing them to take over. I also think scent control is a huge key when anywhere near them, and I am not a scent control nut with my hunting anymore, mostly play the wind. I do the basic precautions and cedar limbs in my totes.

My favorite setups are J or S shaped draws that allow me to give them a good wind to quarter into, however they will at times in the rut come in to them regardless of wind direction. I do see them using them more frequently in daylight if they can have that wind and also if it's not a wide open field edge. I like low lying topography and hunting high near the scrape. It's been my favorite style of hunting for some time now but also feel that the overall location makes a huge difference. There are some locations that they just don't really care for in daylight and you just have to adjust. You will know its a good location when the multiplication of new scrapes pop-up around it. The one that remains is the one you are able to keep active. I also like to clear the vegetation in mid summer after spraying the first year. It will get bigger and bigger each year but I feel they see those spots even when they may not be hitting it and communicating and when it's time the light bulb goes off like, "Oh yeah, I know where I'm going to go." It's also key that the does take it over and that's what I feel makes them a year round scrape. Not sure on that, but I think it's fun to make theories on it.

I started mine back when Buck Fever was owned by a guy named Kevin Krey or something like that. His old DVD taught it like making bucks hunt you, which I believe to a degree. I don't make special trips when we get close to November but take advantage of rainy or extremely windy days to freshen and then every hunting trip in. I feel like the bucks get furious when they check all hours of the night and never find the intruder. Similar with the intruder buck scent you bring in from far away. I like removing farmer field edge scrapes that not only help the combine paint but also bring in the foreign buck forehead gland. Who knows for sure if it works, but I know it doesn't hurt and I sure enjoy it. I'll be sure to get the video up for you guys to see some of it. I was totally caught off guard on the 11th when I looked up and he was in my scrape and done working it, so I just caught the tail end of that one. Good luck to you all!

I hate to spend the money, but it would sure be easier. I got lucky. I was hunting about 50 yards from the truck, when I shothim, heran a big circle and died about 10 yards from where I shot him. Sunday morning I only gave myself until 7:30 to hunt since I'm a pastor and have church responsibilities. Also knew it would have to be a nice one to even think about it. Well, at 7:25 I saw this guy coming towards me. As he passed behind some cover, I drew and as he was about to step into a clear lane, I gave him a voice grunt. He stopped perfectly, my pin quickly settled and the arrow was on its way. Thankfully, he ran through a lane I cut last January and then just to the other side into the thick nasties. I didn't see him fall, but was pretty sure by what I saw as he moved and because of where I saw my arrow hit he would be right there. Sure enough, took about five minutes on the stand to catch my breath and debate with myself what to do. Finally decided to sneak down to where I thought he was and if he wasn't there, I would back out until after church. However, I found him 75 yards from my stand, right where I thought he would be. Snapped a few pics, quartered him, hung the meat in the trees and hustled to get a shower and on to church. Crazy morning but I'd do it again.

Second year in a row shooting a deer from the same spot and also not having to try to decipher a blood trail. Unfortunately, I think there will be houses there next November so it was likely my time to hunt it. Fun while it lasted. Hopefully, I'll find another spot for next year.

Sat. 11/13 at 8:45am on Grand Osage WA special hunt. He was chasing a doe along with another smaller 10ptr. 20-25 yd shot, approx. 30 yd recovery and went down within sight.

The hunt/shot/blood trail are in my thread (CB’s 2021 Hunting Journal) per my posts dated 11/13, 11/14 and videos on 11/15.

Been since 2016 since I even let one fly. In years since then I’ve had many opportunities that I passed up and some “almosts” that I wish would have given me a shot.

Good Luck and safe hunting to all still holding a tag whether buck or doe. Keep’on A Hunt’in. -CB-

I guess I never posted my buck on here.

My biggest to date. Shot the afternoon/evening sit of 11/14.

Second sit ever on this property, and shot him almost exactly 24hrs after hanging this stand. I’d seen him the night before across the creek, and nearly setup on the ground near that trail on the 14th due to a bad wind, but decided to hunt the stand last second. Guess I made the right choice!

Congrats to everyone on this thread, there have been some absolute studs on here!

Actually Jason, if you take your photos in "Landscape mode/orientation" there's rarely if ever a problem. This has been mentioned many times here. A screen shot works too, and is also usually a low-res image that uploads faster, and works better when you have minimal cell coverage.

Well this morning marked the end of my 2021 season. No picture to post on the meat pole as I never seen a mature deer ( let alone one over 130") from the stand or on camera. 3rd year in a row of not seeing anything. Figured it was time to hang it up when the neighbor to the north who took out all his trees a couple years ago drives in and starts pouring out failure piles right on the fence line. Did miss a coyote though that was trying to sneak a turkey. How a coyote at 25 yards can jump an arrow is crazy! Guess I'm going to have to hold 3 feet in front of there nose and about 3 feet high!

I had a little luck Saturday night. This 8 pointer came by following a doe and trailed by a spike. The shot was at about 10 yards and passed through the buck's heart. He went about 100 yards and piled up in the bottom of a nasty ravine. The only way to get him out was to quarter him and pack him out in the dark. It took 3 trips to get the buck and gear back to the canoe. The buck was shot at 4:00 and I slid the canoe into the dock at 8:30. I used a Douglas fir arrow tipped with a Magnus 4 blade head. The bow was a Wild Horse Creek Destiny longbow. --Mike

From: Horsey

Dave - I have hunted for over 40 years on a couple of properties adjoining a little lake where Susie and I have a cabin. We travel by canoe for about 1/2 mile, then hike up to our stands. It helps keep us from disturbing the area any more than necessary. I bet we have hauled well over 50 deer back in the canoe. Using the canoe adds a whole new element to the hunt.

Horsey,

I accidentally posted this on another thread yesterday. After reading more of what you wrote above, your story would be fun to read if you can do it without giving up your area. Congrats again!

Here is the whole story I posted on another site. This contains more detail. I have also attached a photo of the buck's heart with the broadhead cut.

Last night was a good night. I had a really nice 8 pointer come in traveling with a spike buck and following a doe. The stand I was in is located on a bench running parallel to the bank of a small lake. This stand was perfect for the northerly wind we had last night. The doe was in the lead. She walked straight for me. For a while I couldn't tell which side of the stand she was going to pass. She finally chose the side on my right. Not good for a right hand shooter. I figured the buck would follow the same path. After milling around in front of me at 40 yards for a while. The buck followed the path of the doe. I was already turned around for the shot as he passed at 10 yards. There were 3 openings in the brush I could shoot through. I was coming to full draw as he passed the first opening. By the time I reached full draw he was through the opening. I almost released as he went through the second opening but missed my opportunity. As his chest appeared in opening 3, I released. The shot was a perfect heart shot. There was no pass through as the broadhead lodged in the breast bone, but I could see blood spraying immediately. The blood trail was easy to follow. The problem was he went downhill into a deep ravine. He traveled about 100 yards and piled up in the bottom of a nasty, knarly draw. My first thought was that I could field dress him and drag him through the bottom of the ravine about 1/4 mile to where I parked the canoe. I finished field dressing him after dark and decided to carry my gear to the canoe and scout out a path to drag the deer. The bottom of the ravine and sidehill were choked with downed trees making it impossible to drag the deer. I thought about taking him out the other side of the ravine but it looked just as impossible. The only way for me to get him out by myself was to pack him out. After dropping my gear at the canoe, I called my wife and told her I would be delayed because I was going to part the deer out and pack him to the canoe. She told me to get me drivers license out, look at the dates and recognize that I was 70 years old, which came with some limitations. After promising not to make the trip in one load, I got spousal permission to continue with the task. I had trouble finding the deer in the dark with all the blowdowns. Once I found the deer, the skinning and quartering was fairly easy, but time consuming. A headlamp was a big help. I packed the meat in old pillow cases I always carry in my pack. For the first load, I put the bags containing the hind quarters, backstraps and tenderloins into the pack. I decided to leave my flashlight with the rest of the deer to help me find my way back and use my headlamp for navigation. I also decided that the only reasonable way out was back up the steep hill, follow the ridge to the high bank of the lake and back down to the canoe. The trip was tough. Trip 2 wasn't as bad with a smaller load of meat and the head. What a rewarding canoe ride back. My wife, Susie was waiting at the dock. I paddled into the dock at 8:30 and transferred the load to my jeep. Upon arriving home, I put the meat in a refrigerator to cool overnight. Dinner and a glass of whiskey hit the spot. Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to share the great experience. I used my Wild Horse Creek Destiny longbow and a Douglas fir arrow tipped with a Magnus 4 blade head. --Mike

Mr. Dunnaway it looks like you eat the heart by the pic...just curious if you eat the liver as well? My dad back in the day got me hooked on the heart but the liver I didn’t like as much.

From: Horsey
02-Dec-21
I an not much of a liver guy. We do some different things with the heart as follows: 1. Cut the heart in strips, wrap with bacon, season it with lemon pepper and grill. Be careful not to overcook. 2. Cut it in chunks and put it in chili with ground venison. 3. Cut into chunks about 2" x 2" and boil until done. When cooked through, cut into small (1/4") pieces. Make a dip by mixing it with chopped celery, mayonnaise, horseradish, chopped onion, lemon juice, black pepper and hot sauce. (our favorite)

No it would be scored as part of the main beam

From: Thornton

The main beam curls. That is a double drop tine

From: writer

My vote is - The end of the main beam is the middle of the last three tines. It’s a single drop.

02-Dec-21
I’m in the double drop camp.

From: be still
02-Dec-21
Unlike the left side the main beam on the right coming around on the backside going forward the main beam has a downward slope. To me that last point because of that already down slope fits right into the curve but it gets skinny so quick it’s hard to tell. I would guess single drop too...in other words I would call it a main frame 9 with double drops.

Got a chance to pass on the hunting tradition in my family. This is my oldest grandson's first deer. It was hard to keep him from fidgeting and talking but once he did stop he had success.

He was pretty excited to say the least. I had to remind him of his form seconds before the shot, things like right eye open left eye closed, hand position and the butt stock in the shoulder pocket. He made a double lung shot at 35 yards. The deer went about 30 yards spun around 360 degrees and then went another 10 or so yards, just out of our sight. He immediately thought he might have missed but I reassured him that he didn't. I had him slowly approach where he shot the buck and to continue to check in the direction he last seen him. We got to site of where he was when Tyler shot him to start the blood trail. I showed him a yellow leaf with three spots on it and he figured out right away those weren't blood spots. Then we took up the blood trail and I had him follow it all the way to the deer.

From: be still
09-Dec-21
Yes Patrick I would assume it was wild as well for 2 reasons. 1...it probably wouldn’t have taken her 2 years to get a pen deer. 2...it’s way too small to be considered a good one for the pen. It would be considered a cull inside the high fence. Interesting that you knew that he was a breeder cause the deer does have the look of one though that has went downhill.

09-Dec-21
It might be pen raised and was on the downhill side and it took two years for the daughter to convince her dad to let her shoot it;-)

Amazing they can grow that much antler in one season. Congrats to her, I have never even seen anything close to that size in the wild.

My brother has been taking my 12yr old son out the past 9 days over Christmas break. They have been sitting in a trail along a creek. They have been on deer every sit but haven't been able to make it for different reasons like too far (he has a hard limit of 20yds), deer just walk on by without stopping for the shot, not a good angle and so on. So my brother was getting frustrated, so today he took a little doe urine and put on a branch hoping a deer would stop just long enough for a shot. And it worked. His first deer

Rusty that’s a great deer and a very nice video. 9 days can take a toll on a kid. Loved how your son kept his composure to let the first deer walk and keep it together to make the shot on the bigger one. I could hear the tense excitement in your brother’s voice when he told him he could take the shot and then the exhale of emotions out of both of them right after the shot. Quick update - Colorado didn't result in a filled tag but I absolutely had my opportunities. Been working on doe tags for a population hunt and have had some fun. Doubled up on 12/2/21 and got my 4th doe in Kansas 12/23/21

Doubled out in does with my buddy. Known this guy since the 8th grade glad he finally took up hunting a few years ago.

Congrats young man and I have no issues with you using a crossbow during regular bow season unlike the 2 primadonnas that posted before me.

David: You can be honest to the young man. Tell him how you feel about crossbows.

For the record, they were already approved for youth and seniors, as well as physically challenged. Nobody here that I know of fought that.

I personally apologize for this person's response above. It's an attack on us, not you, ya done good kid

Don’t apologize for me Kyle. Don’t patronize the young man. He is probably smarter then you think. He can tell the difference. Ask yourself Kyle would it be ok if the young man shot it over a corn pile? (Failure Pile) Would he had done good?
