A week into the season and I've been having friends send my photos of their kills. Time to start our meat pole.
Share photos and as much of the story you can.
My son Casey filled one of his doe tags this morning Grandsons had a blast
Way to get it started, congrats. North wind this coming Monday morning for me...fingers crossed.
my brother got this beauty Friday night right after the rain ended in Southern Clark. 12 pnts, Perfect shot, went 60yds. After the shot the buck just stood there for several minutes before walking off, very strange and he had a terrible night thinking the shot was low. He found him very quickly the next morning
Florence County. 7" Beard. 41# Blacktail Bow, Cedar arrows, Ace Broadhead. 15 yard shot, he flipped up in the air and was dead when he landed so I didn't really need the string tracker. Trailcam pic of the action.
Nice buck, private land? I've seen some goooood bucks in Clark County forest in the past 10 years or more. Odd if you new Clark County back in the 70's when you would see 10 pointers the size of your hands taken. But, there are some great animals down there. Too bad there was a lot of poaching down there last year. One group that was busted shot 50 animals that the DNR knew of, and a horse.
private land, when we bought the place in the late 80's the horns were always bleach white and busted up. Every buck that wasn't a spike had a busted beam, half rack etc. The last 20yrs the horns are better and better and I would say are "normal" now. opening day last Saturday we had 11 guys in the woods and everyone saw deer, let some little bucks go and a lot of medium does and fawns otherwise we would have been shooting. Lots of deer this year
Way to get it done.....again Craig. You are lethal!
Great buck by your brother Wausau
Nice critters fellas,.....doesn't matter,...deer or turkey,...nice doings. Ya got what ya were aiming at, way to go!
Congratulations to you all. Nice flicks.
Yesterday was a good day. Green Bay Bowhunters won and I sent an arrow through a doe. She made it 120 yards and died. When she was walking in she hit my ground scent where I walked in and she stopped cold. When she finally came through it was at a lope. I did the "meah" thing on her and she stopped for the 18 yard shot. First time I ever did the "meah" thing but that song "you had me at meah" was in my head. Also saw a three legged buck. Land owner said he was three legged last year. His rack was all screwed up. Not sure how he's able to avoid the song dogs.
I know a guy that knows a guys brothers ex sister in laws mothers boyfriend that shot this 10 pointer this weekend
Great job wausau. Private? Congrats Craig but never surprised to see you stacken em
Great pics Craig. Congrats!
I got this one a couple weeks ago. It was a great hunt. Both me and my buddy had our kids in camp with us, however when there was packing to be done it was left to just the two of us. Oh well, we got it done and will forever have fond memories.
Seems like heck of a trip Greg! Where was this? Share the story.
GVS, could have used that Goldwing! Nice hunt. North of the border? Newfoundland?
Great stuff guys. Craig, that blacktail has been good to you. GVS, great job, love that bow. Always hoped to do a moose hunt and actually had one booked in Ontario. A fly in bow only area. All fell through because of mad cow disease and then $$ the following year.
Thanks
This was a lower 48 DIY hunt. I even put the almost too heavy for me Robertson limbs back on. One of the things that made this hunt so special was that last winter I REALY messed up my back. I was in so much pain that there was no way that I could have done any part of the hunt. Found out that I have degerative disk disease, bulged disks , narrowing of the nerve channels, arthritis, and am on borrowed time for surgery. Many trips to a good chiropractor got me back in the game just in time. I was so grateful to just be able to do it. My son flew out from Cleveland for the week. Dale's son was in camp for five days. We got to have some quality time with our kids. Awesome, just awesome!
Dale didn't have a tag. He was just there to help and be camera man. Ha! He forgot to hit record. But he did get her going down. Oh well, we got even more laughs.
I hope we can do it again.
Love seeing all the traditional kills. CraigL, you never disappoint.
GVS, that sucks to have that many ailments. Kudos for you to work through them to keep shooting that recurve, you should be proud.
Congrats to you Greg, well earned and hope you heal up and keep at it.
Some nice harvests fellas. A moose with traditional gear. You are living my dream!
Heal up Greg and you can go on a hunt with Mitten for a month or two! Congratulations! My recurve are all Robertsons.
Congrats guys!
I shot this bull in Arizona on 9/16.
Cheesehead Mike. Nice bull sir.
Nice job again Mike!!! Ahh, you forgot to pick me up again for the trip?
Well done Mike. Yet another one who scores big every single year.
Thanks guys! Funny John, the entire time I was in Arizona I kept thinking I forgot something!
LOL, figured you would be!!!
Greg! Excellent job, Congrats! Hunting them is the FUN part, after their down s when the Work begins! Shot one a small bull back in the mid eighty's and it was a hunt of a life time but the most work I've ever done in the outdoors! Again Congrats!
I've been part of packing 7 elk out, yes including mine, and it never seemed to get easier. It is a lot of work. One year we did get a good deal on a mule and a donkey, that was easy.
Congrats, Greg and Mike. Very nice!! Its been pretty slow here but I got one for the freezer.
Craig, as usual your an animal! Nice job again
DiRTY MiKE 's Link
First elk. Story on main forum linked above.
Congrats Dirty Mike!!!! It's' probably the angle but those arrows look REALLY long
Hell of a first elk! Son!
Craig, you're too good with that thing. Could you at least tighten the odds, and shoot with a slingshot instead? Well done.....again!
Noc, good to see someone on the board. This is the longest span of time I've gone without hunting. Today Mark's 14 days, and I'm skipping tomorrow for sure.
Looks like some tasty vittles there Craig.
Congratulations! What a way to start!
Craig, way to put that piece of art to work!!! Great elk Mike, can't wait to read the story.

Awesome work. Lots of good stuff here. I was fortunate enough to get some meat for the freezer a week ago Friday. Shout out to my recovery crew for helping me get it out of the woods.
Thats whats its about right there, Novice!

Thanks guys. I truly love these kid's passion for the outdoors and hunting. Any way I can help facilitate it, I will. There is also a youth utv that 2 of the boys (brothers) got for Xmas. Their goal this season was to put a deer in the back of it. Glad I could help make it happen. Well done PJ. Extra tough to get em in the Northwoods
Well got it done tonight Almost didn’t go because of rain on and off Anyway this guy came sneaking in about 5:45 Paused between me and my mock scrape quartering away about 10 yds Thought I made a good shot Waited about 5 minutes and it starts raining Found decent blood right away and broken arrow about 25 yds Then it starts to pour So I text my son and he says keep looking while I have some day light Lost all blood He shows up as quick as he can and we can’t find anything as it is raining / lightning and thundering ,I climbed back up my tree to confirm my compass reading My daughter then show up to help She finds more blood ( young. Eyes ) Casey does a grid search in the direction I thought I might have heard him crash Long story short he says he found more blood We go up to him and there he lays Broken end of arrow with broadhead was poking the skin out right behind the off shoulder but didn’t poke threw Very happy with him My heaviest ever 197 lbs dressed ( I should have gutted him and he would have gone 200 ,my dream ,Casey is too good at gutting as he guided for 10 yrs and is a pro and gets everything out lol, Two weeks of vacation coming up Now what ? Guess lots of doe tags to fill
Sorry for long post and redoing pics
Well done and congratulations!!!!!!!
Wow, he's a dandy Ridge! Congrats on getting it done!
Good for you RR. Nice buck! Something to be proud of! Congratulations. I always like it when guys tell the story of how their deer (...or bear, elk, goat, etc.) was taken. Makes this forum all that much more interesting. Good story, and thanks for it. Again, congrats!
That's a dandy, job well done! Nice to see some guys having success.
RR - Congrats on a great buck.
Beautiful buck Ridge and story to go with it. Congratulations!
Awesome RR! I'm with Case. Really like hearing the story as well. That's a biggun!
Nice animal ridge!!! Congrats!! You could bird hunt, some of the best fishing is happening right now, or ?
Thanks guys Good luck to everyone .Looking forward to seeing more stories and pics from those of you who have success in the coming weeks
Brett's first Archery buck
Brett's first Archery buck
Had an unbelievable experience last Sunday evening taking my buddy's son out. Have spent a lot of my season with him and have had great experiences and some missed opportunities. This kid has been grinding every weekend of the season (and even before-hanging stands, food plot work, camera recon/scouting). Early ams, long sits, basketball, homework, etc. Well it all came together Sunday. We heard the familiar sound of leaves crunching behind us. I told him something was coming and he turned to discover a nubby. I said, "well get ready something else maybe coming behind it." Sure enough, I hear more hooves in the leaves. He excitedly whispers "big buck, it's a big buck!" I then peer over to his side (unfortunately downwind side), to see a 10 pt stepping into the open and looking around. I fear it will get nervous being downwind and it's already looking around. So, I emphatically whisper "shoot, shoot!" I realize I'm being of no help by doing this and then tell him "take your time, aim, and ..." Before I can finish, he releases and I watch the shaft bury right behind the shoulder and the buck groans (never heard this in 35 years of hunting) and his front legs give out and he nose dives across the fallow field in front of us and into the edge of a food plot across the way. He manages to stand up, take 2 normal bounds, and again nose dives into the edge of an adjoining patch of hardwoods. He's toast we figured! "I smoked him" he says. Yes, he did. His first archery buck and a fine specimen it is. I couldn't be more proud.
Novice, congrats to the young man. Fantastic first buck!
Novice, great job to you and congrat's for Brett. Excellent story.
That's what it's all about!!! Well done! :)
Novice congratulations to the young hunter! And thanks to you for mentoring someone that I'm sure now will be lifelong bowhunter!
Awesome, congrats to both. Great first buck with a bow.
Novice, congrats to him. That's awesome!! Wish I would have gotten started with archery that young!
Novice, awesome story. Congrats to that young man and congrats to you for spending the time with him.
Congrats on the mentoring and to the young man on a great kill.
Liking to get a bow for a young man about his stature, what model does he shoot
Congratulations to the young man and to yourself Novice for taking him on such a memorable experience.
Congratulations to the young man and to yourself Novice for taking him on such a memorable experience.
Congratulations to the young man and to yourself Novice for taking him on such a memorable experience.
Novice, you did something this young man will remember for the rest of his life,...you gave him a positive experience worthy of the years. Great job being a mentor and congratulations to the young man.
Novice - Congrats to the young man and a big thank you for mentoring him.
Novice That is so cool Congratulations to the young man and great job of mentoring him. You have helped set him up for a lifetime of hunting Well done
That's an awesome story Novice. The shoot shoot thing is certainly something I've experienced more than once. These kids are so emphatic about shot placement, they seem to really take their time. Turkey hunting I see it often.
Had this one and three little buddies come into my decoy Tuesday evening. I apologize to anyone I offend with a long story, but here it is, and that's who I am.
Never seen this deer before, including on camera. He comes into my decoy which I just that day, put new antlers on. Rigged up a neat saddle to carry him in like a paperboy, and set it up looking at me, at about 20 yards. I find the deer tend to want to make eye contact with the decoy, putting them in a good shot range. So, he comes in side-stepping, bristled up, licking his chops, and does a couple jittery mock charges at the decoy. (If you've ever decoyed, these deer are on edge). He never quite settled for the broadside shot in his uneasiness. I draw my bow for what was over a minute between another charge, and he finally commits. Just as I release, he charges again. I wasn't certain about the shot, because he turned toward me, and I hit him quartering. I watched him run towards the woods, and he finally was blocked by some foliage as he did an arcing retreat. Then silence as I thought he likely made it to the woods? I had three bucks at my decoy, as it darkened. I was pinned down for 30 minutes which is how long I'll give any deer, but it got dark in a hurry! Well, I finally decided a barred owl call was in order, and the three bucks moved off.
Got down, no arrow, but decent blood at impact. I looked a bit further, and couldn't find any blood in a 40 foot circle, beyond the impact?
Well, I have a friend with a Teckel (dachshund), and he's a fine tracking dog. I called him, and we had two options. Go out and look further, avoiding coyotes which are thick here, or first thing in the morning hit the track. Well, this is where I sided with caution and I feel dumb for it. Now mind you, I can track a deer, but......but, I have a friend with a dog. Had I not known a blood tracker, I'd have done the job I've done so many times. I was just unsure, and didn't want to booger up the track for his dog.....but hindsight says I should have. Of course I was worried about coyotes.
He comes over in the morning and we head out there. The field is not flat. It has high and low spots. I even drove past it in the very early morning, and there was a doe and two fawns feeding right where i felt that deer would have entered the woods . We walk out, get about 200 yards, and he says what's that laying in the field? Like seriously shocked and embarrassed, I was like....my damn deer! Oh, I was happy, but I felt stupid too. There were a couple things keeping me from going that night, and a couple things making me want to look further. I took the cautionary approach. That blindspot of foliage, and the fact I never heard him enter the woods, was because he was heart shot and piled up 20 yards from the woods, just where I couldn't see him any further lol.
So, we had his other younger dog there as well, so we did a little teaching, and what better way, than a nice 160 yard heart shot deer, dead within eyesight lol. The arrow was still in the deer. It entered heart, exited gut. I was extremely lucky. I can only assume I shot low, which I have been trying to overcome, and something I need to work on further apparently. Went back to the impact site, and there was literally no blood for like 40 yards, except where the shot happened at. Always lessons to learn I suppose?
That's the story. Butchered him up, caped him out, and that's "all" I gotta say about that.
Thanks again for the positive feedback. Still ecstatic. One of the best hunting experiences ever. Pete, congrats. Cool story. And best to err on the side of caution. Always wanted to get one by decoying. Most action I ever had with one is a nubby headbutting it one time. Lol
Well Done, Congrats Pete!
Congratulations, Pete!!!! That's quite a buck, well done!!
Congratulations Pete Very nice buck and good story ! Love to read how it all went down Looking forward to setting out decoy for my daughter or son
Way to go! Finished before November, again!
Congratulations to you Pete. Well done. And a good story to boot! Ya done good fella!
Seems like all your planning and effort fell into place and worked just as it was supposed to. Ya had all your ducks in a row and it worked out. Your plan came together in fine fashion. Again, well done.
Nice set-up on the decoy, that's sure fun isn't it? Just curious, do you know the brand decoy you have? I, and I am sure many others, enjoyed your story. You did not need to apologize for your effort, we all enjoy your narratives. They are just the sort of thing that serve to make this forum interesting and keep the grand sport of bowhunting alive!
Congratulations Pete. I really enjoyed the story.
Pete - Congrats on a beautiful buck! Well deserved. Now what are you going to do the rest of bow season?
Congrats on the fine deer!
Very nice Pete, congrats.
Great story pete! I love the long stories
Well thanks everyone!
Bill, the brand was I believe featherlite? I bought it perhaps 30 years ago. I don't think they own the decoy any longer? Essentially it was a deer that assembled via two front legs (as one), two rear legs (separate), and the head and neck. To be honest, I screwed everything into place because I carry it out in one piece and it's much quieter all tightened up. It's not a very aggressive looking decoy like the Primos brand, but it is an eyes and ears forward looking decoy, that the deer simply cannot resist? Over the years, I'm almost certain they react to it, because they do not recognize it as one of the locals. Sort of like walking into a pub the first time. All eyes upon you lol. Well, until you buy the bar a round, then you're one of the gang! Ha! One thing I'd like to share, because you are handling the decoy, is to rub it down with the vegetation it's sitting in, once you have it staked down. It seems to mask the human scent a bit, and although you're obviously not killing human odor completely, combined with the obvious visual effect, they seem to overlook the odorous effect, and yes, pins and needles, but typically not heading to cover. They want to investigate, and in this case, charge it. (Obviously this guy did not buy the bar a round lol.)
Thanks again everyone. Just lucky is all, and Jim, what am I going to do? Read all the rest of the stories about to come, and perhaps shoot a doe. Cruisers are cruising! Good luck all!
Congratulations! Very nice buck and cool story. One question - how did the young dog do on his training lesson?
Great buck Pete! Big time congrats. You are definitely one of the better hunters and contributors on this site!!!!
Nice going Pete! Excellent buck along with a great story. I’ve used a decoy in the past with mixed results. Might have to break out the old decoy again :-)
Pete , Maybe we will have to have a big doe contest now ,I’m sitting in a tree right now hoping for a doe or turkey to show up . Sat last night and saw only a decent buck cruising
Thanks again, all! Two Feathers, PM sent. You're too kind Happy. I guess it's who you talk to, because personality conflict is inevitable lol. Ru4snow, I think the window to decoy is short, and it is now. When breeding takes place, bucks seem to lose the need to challenge other bucks. The power of sex takes over in my opinion. Ridge Runner, big doe contest? You'll win lol. I have some weird thing about shooting does with fawns. That limits me to shooting yearlings most of the time, and does are just plain tougher to hunt for me? I feel like their senses are far more acute than bucks for some reason? But yes, a doe is on the table. I have off until the 15th after all. Maybe a camera to take pictures instead?
Good luck everyone. Can't wait to hear all the success stories.
Congratulations Pete! Damn nice buck and a great story! Enjoy your time off.
Novice What poundage does that young man pull, and how long did it take him to build enough muscle to get it back ?
A lot of posts on here without deer in them. Kind of defeats the purpose of the thread.
Would like to see the weapon with the deer also, I love seeing other setups.
Congrats guys, great stories and good job Mark with the mentoring. Those kids are definitely headed in the right direction!
Got it done today around 2:30pm. This buck jumped a doe that was bedding about one hundred yards in front of me. He then thrashed a small tree near where the doe had been. He walked straight at me and went to my right. I had to stand up and turn, but got it done at about 25 yards. The shot wasn't great, but he only went about 20 yard's and died immediately. Very thankful and had my son with me which made it even better.
Congrats Fred Nice looking buck and a terrific picture Well done
Well done on the great buck Justin. That's awesome your kid was there to watch it unfold, and help dragging it out lol.
Justin - Congrats on a nice buck for sure.
Nice work Fred! And having your son there makes it even more awesome!
Congrats to all. Your pictures without tongue hanging out, or bloody wounds, A+.
Congrats everybody.... got my opportunity last night 10/30/21
Love those clean 8 point ers .
Dark woods buck? His coat is so dark! Congrats!
Great buck,s guys, Fred, great job and so hard and so special w/ a copilot, you will never forget . I learned quickly their on their own after that.
Beautiful buck madman. Congrats!
Thanks guys.... keep posting up the pics. The best hunting of the year is upon us!! Bucks are moving big time....
Took a doe for meat. Bill (Casekiska) you recognize the broadhead?
Lucked out this morning after a last minute decision to get in stand.
Lucked out this morning after a last minute decision to get in stand.
Holy moly a brute. Congrats. Motivation to keep freezing on stand. Well done
Nice bucks lrib/Noc!!! Noc, love the looks of that big woods area in the photo!!!
Noc, that's not the story I was hoping for! Details please. Great job fellas. Deer should be falling this week and next!
Some decent bucks shot already. Congrats to you guys.
Great job guys. Congrats!
Thanks guys. L2H thanks and congrats on your doe with the curve.
congrats guys, some dandy looking bucks.
“I was in the pool”
As George Costanza would say.
Don't post much but love reading this forum. Got it done last night on public ground in Marquette county. 15 yards, Red Rock ghillie from the ground. I know this buck isnt going to win any contest but I couldn't be happier. Since moving to Southeast Wisconsin from the Upper Peninsula 3 years ago I have taken two bucks on pretty heavily pressured public ground. Not monsters but I have to say that I feel more satisfaction with them than any I have taken prior. The learning curve on public ground here was steep for me and I spent alot of time frustrated and feeling sorry for myself. Looking at the buck last night though all I felt was deep satisfaction and I am so glad to have taken him. It really drove home to me that a trophy is what you put in to hunting not just the animal you take out. I hope that everyone gets to feel like I did no matter the size of the bones on their trophies heads. Keep posting and good luck to everyone.
Awesome buck U.P! Love the character!
Thanks Noc. His right side main beam had a relatively fresh break. Leaves me wondering what he looked like beforehand.
Wow guys, those are so awesome bucks. Congrats to all you who recently added. Keep 'em coming.
Well done U.P. Perfect shot!
Congrats UP well done ,That’s a cool buck and a good read
Nice job UP. I feel the same as you. I hunt public land with a recurve. I am selective on bucks for a time, not on adult doe's when I need the meat. But, you put a 6'r in front of me toward the end of early season, I'm taking it. I don't hunt private land, not necessarily a trophy hunter, although I have seen some true giants on public forest land, I am a hunter and want meat. My trophy is what I hunt with, where I hunt and how I hunt, one on one with the animal. Most times they outsmart me, but sometimes they don't.
Congrats, UP! That is a very fine looking buck, great shot placement, too!
Casekiska's trophy buck shot on Tuesday.
Yesterday got lucky and found one out looking for a new girlfriend at 4:15 pm
Great bucks to all of you. Congrats!!
Doug - Absolutely beautiful buck! A great one! Congratulations! Care to share the story on him?
I was set up between a picked corn field and a creek. It is only 20 yards to the field and 23 yards to the creek.
The buck was following the other side of the creek towards me. He got a drink and crossed in front of me. Then he went up the bank. There was a hole about the size of a basketball in the brush at the top of the bank. As he went up I drew. The shot was at 22-24 yards. He ran out into the corn field and dropped 55 yards from me. The arrow was a complete pass threw so I can use the arrow again. Not the broad-head as it broke ribs going in and out.
Nice was able after dark to drive my dad’s ranger right to it. Absolutely no dragging.
Nice story Doug. Ya got it done! Thanks to hear all the interesting stories from guys about their experiences. No two the same! Seems like there's an untold number of ways to get it done. Thanks.
Very happy to see you in the kill thread case! At 77 years and still passionately pursuing whitetails makes me smile. Congratulations to you!
This thread gets better daily.... great deer so far guys! Keep posting them up.
Beautiful buck!! I'd be super happy with him.
Congrats Doug. Nice monster
Nice mass on that buck. Congratulations Doug!
Nice mass on that buck. Congratulations Doug!
My daughter had knee surgery 2 weeks ago but I knew that wouldn’t stop her from getting back in the woods. She was able to hobble out to one of her stands yesterday afternoon and harvest this nice 9 point buck.
About 5:40 she heard the buck coming through the middle of the woods. She saw antlers and decided it was one she would shoot given the opportunity. With her knee she wasn’t sure if she should stay sitting and hope he would come in front but she decided to stand. He stopped about 30 yards broadside out front to the right but she knew that was a little bit of a stretch for her so she waited patiently. Once he started moving closer and put his head down she decided to draw. He was going to her right so when she drew her tether was in the way so she had to readjust. Of course he stopped directly behind a tree when she was full draw. She wanted to let up but played the waiting game because she knew as soon as she let up he would move from behind the tree. So she held for about a minute and he finally moved to the field behind her. She gave a little mmrp to get him to stop and let her arrow fly. He ran back into the woods about 30 yards down with the arrow sticking out. She got down and found good blood but we decided to wait about a little over an hour before tracking. My daughter, myself, and my son went out and followed a great blood trail. She spotted her luminock farther up in the middle of the woods but when we got there it wasn’t in the deer. She said her heart sank for a minute but then she spotted the buck dead about 10 yards away. Unfortunately in that short amount of time a coyote had already started working on it. Thankfully we didn’t wait until morning or there probably wouldn’t be much left. Super proud of her for her dedication and persistence and happy for her as this was her biggest buck with a bow. She was also thankful that her big brother was there to help drag it out as just walking through the plowed field was rough on her knee.
Congratulations to your daughter on being tough, and a great buck. Another great story. Coyotes are relentless!
Wow Ridge, your daughter is a heck of a tough, dedicated bow hunter. Congrats to both of you!
Congratulations to your daughter for the taking of a nice buck and to you for doing a great job teaching her the ways of the woods and bowhunting. Good job to both of you.
Congrats to your daughter. Great job!
Congrats. Coyotes don't take long do they? I'm in stand since 5:50 could hear them singing right up to first light. I suppose if I shoot I'll have to deal with that too. 4 deer just popped out in the cut corn.......
Congrats to you daughter ridge and her determination to get out there. On coyotes, my good friend is a trapper and has taken 28 yotes in 2 weeks. I am assuming that has gone up as the last number he gave was last week.
Well Done!!!! Looks like a fun drag :)
Congrats to your daughter for getting it done dispite her health issues. Wishing a full and speedy recovery. Nice buck.
Thanks for all the nice comments guys She a pretty determined and independent young lady , Ya was a tough drag but my son guided in Colorado for 10 yrs so he was used to handling elk etc ,Great to have him along for all the grunt work ,Here’s a pic of the buck when we recovered him ,So I think I’m correct as to the coyotes We never used to have that problem but there here now ( quite a few on camera and we hear them ) eastern Brown Co
Congrats to your daughter RidgeRunner! You and your family have had quite the year!
In just a few weeks I will be shifting my efforts to coyotes. You can never kill enough of them but you sure can slow the pressure almost to a halt.
Ridge Runner, do you have eagles there? In my opinion, and I most certainly could be wrong, that reminds me of what a bird of prey would do. Starting at the wound already there. Coyotes (not always) usually start at the rear of the deer. Also, coyotes are terrible everywhere, and very likely what got to your daughter's deer. Again, great buck as well as determination on her part. The group effort sounds like a fantastic bond that should echo amongst other families who share this sort of connection.
It always always been my experiece that coyotes start at the rear, as well. I don't have a guess what nibbled that buck, but looks like they missed the good parts! Not much meat at all lost there on the ribs.
I would have no problem eating that deer, cutting away any meat surrounding the eaten portion, which shouldn't be much.
Congrats to her!
Thanks guys ,Yes Pete we do have a few eagles but haven’t seen them lately Ya no wasted meat We had back straps last night YUM Ya I also agree that coyotes usually start at the rear Would coons start chewing ing on the entry wound ? We did see coons while tracking
Caught this guy between does at 5:10pm on Friday, Nov. 5th in the wind. He was a fighter with a tine hole in the side of his neck and his hair along his back was all tore up.
No one to take my picture, the best I could do in the dark with a timer on my camera.
Nice buck Jack. You kinda look like Joe Rogan (not sure if you ever heard that). Hole in the neck, that would be a first for me.
Congratulations Jack! Way to go! Your smile is about a mile wide! I think you liked the fruit of your hunt! Any chance you could tell the story of your hunt & how you got him? Always make for interesting reading? Again, congrats.
Nice buck, great smile. I'm with Case. Bring the story.
Nice deer Jack. Nice to see a hunter smiling instead of looking like a tough guy. Congrats!
Congrats Jack - I'd love to read the story.
Nice buck Jack!! When I get deer in to mount this time of year they are so beat up. Most of that size have cut up eyelids, mouth, nose, ears, lots of extra work for a Taxidermist.
Great buck Jack and very nice pictures
Very nice Jack. That pic is great. Sometimes the best aren't the ones in the photo shoot
ridgerunner, are there bears in your area?
November 14th in Iowa. He came by at 5 yards, my arrow flew true and he ran 30 yards and expired. Feeling extremely thankful.
Awesome quickdraw congrats, nice bow, what is that?
Beautiful buck, and congratulations doing it the harder way.
WOW! Nice buck there! Way to go! Yep, like Pete said, "...doing it the harder way." Seriously, that is a beautiful buck. Congratulations.
Nice well done! Old school! Those check patterns like your jacket work well
Nice Buck. Well done with the Traditional equipment!!
Awesome Quickdraw! Trad to boot. Well done.
Congratulations Very nice and I admire the traditional gear and look ,Well done
Congratulations Very nice and I admire the traditional gear and look ,Well done
Quick draw... Nice to see a fellow trad guy with success...
Congrats to you and well earned using "Trad".
Quick draw nice buck. Dwyer?
Me and my daughter.
Me and my daughter.
I am new to this site, but I have read so many of your posts over the last 2 years. Good and interesting. I decided to join this as I think that I am like so many of you all. I adore your stories and love hearing of the journey then the success. I am long winded, but here is the story. I have an 18 acre farm in south central WI. Not a farm that holds deer, but on the right day, I can take a nice buck. My 12 year old daughter wanted to hunt this fall, but had little success at Grandpa’s 160 acre farm and did not ask me to hunt on October 24. I chose to go behind my house and sit in my line fence. I have a line fence between two fields, one 60 acre field currently with a cover crop and the other 10 acre field just plowed. I had a good wind for deer coming from the Northwest, and the east. I sat with rattling horn and a grunt call on the ground given the wind. I went out at 5 o clock and made two rattling sequences. After the second, I sat the horns on the ground and looked to the east. This buck was standing in the cover crop about 100 yards away. He was looking in my direction and I knew that he had saw my movement, but could not tell what I was. He started to walk to the river to the north of the cover crop field. Once he got to the field edge he started to walk away from me. I made 2 fawn bleats and he came trotting to the line fence that I was standing in. He buggered in the trees for a minute then came out into the other field for a 30 yard shot. first time in a long time, my knees were shaking. Arrow flew, looked good but it had been misty raining. The arrow looked good but there was no blood on the ground within 25 yards. I saw him run into the neighbor’s field 250 yards away. Went inside and my kids (4) all wanted to track, but given the rain and it being Sunday, I only took my wife. We tracked the deer on the neighbor’s for another 100 yards after last sight. Piled up 350 yards away. While gutting the deer, I had a single lung hit. I can only think that the deer did not breath for the first 50 yards and that is why there was no blood after the shot.
Good stuff Country boy, nice buck and welcome to bowsite!
Thanks guys! Kingntuff, yeah that’s a Dwyer bow. I’ve got 4 of them..
Welcome....if you have been reading you know how to seperate the grain from the chaff by now. Well done. Nice buck congratulations.
Well done sir! And welcome to the site, you're in for quite the experience. Congratulations on taking a fine buck and for telling the story of how it all went down. Stories like this make this site all that much more worthwhile,...I appreciate them and enjoy the read. Good to hear how the "other guy" did it! (PS - I too am in southern WI, Looks like you & I hunt the farmland whitetails and not the northern big woods animals. Two different experiences but both are fun.)
Well done country boy and welcome to the forum.
If you have been lurking for awhile you have a good idea on what is smoke and what is fire.
Congrats Knifeman. Great account of your kill.
Hoot I just fixed country boys pic.
My 2021 season is now history. For the second year my New Zealand archery hunt was canceled. So I went to the Everglades to do something different. It certainly was a different hunt taking this 10 footer after a day and a half.
Our Bear camp was again 100% we had 7 hunters all having a great time. This archery beauty over 300 was taken by a hunter from the Green Bay area. We shot 3 this year with white V's. Edit: 2022 should be an interesting year I have a full camp booked with 4 girls hunting in camp...
After bear camp I traveled up to alberta up by the yellow knife. On an 8 day hunt I saw 15 bulls passing 6 up to 6 yards away. I passed on 2, 50 inche plus bulls one at 10 yards due to poor shots.. I took this one at 53 yards the last 30 minutes of the hunt. Note The triple beam. I netted 530 lbs of bone meat. Then back to Wisconsin.
Back in Wisconsin I fell to the pressure of the grandson and shot this small buck. His excitement was worth it.
My son shot this buck . Both boys shot archery bucks and each shot archery bulls in Montana. We had a good year. Now its a new year and new tags.
I don't know where that picture came from about me and my grandson. Its not even my picture. Edit I erased it.
Nice Arrow, a great season for sure!!!
Congratulations on a great season Arrow!
On a fluke I was awarded 1 of the 3 nonresident moose tags this past year. I was actually #4 but one person dropped out so I ended up with a tag. Actually my son was to go with me but when I didn’t draw in the initial drawing he accept his Wyoming Elk tag after waiting 8 years. So solo it was for me. Not to bore you with details , I scouted for 3 days without finding much sign. Then I started hunting, after 3 days of 5-13 miles a day I ended up in a honey hole which was loaded with beds and droppings. I decided I would hunt that area until I had an opportunity. Well it didn’t take long and I shot this cow on the 4th morning. Some of the best meat ever!!!
Good stuff Arrow. Great bit of hunting done there!
Trapper, I'm very jealous of all that moose meat. Some day perhaps? Goals!
I was smiling at the beginning of the pack out.
Thats one big, funny looking deer... congratulations!!!
Congratulations Trapper! Happy you took some time to share. What was your arrow setup? Magnus BH?
Lots of Good Eating there Trapper Congrats. Pete-pec I left my home in August and didn't sleep a night there till the end of deer season. I didn't include the pictures from the time guiding in Montana. Lots of miles. Edit: Trapper,,, See You Sunday (:
Nice one Trapper
Moose goes well with caviar.
Stumpshooter, you remember!!
Yes Nocturnal, Magnus 4 blade Stingers out of a 60# Bowtech Insanity. Broad head passed thru body cavity and lodged in off side scapula.
Thanks Arrow and yes see you Sunday.
Congrats Trapper! Were you still smiling on your final load of packing meat out. LOL
Good one Trapper, moose is some great tasting meat especially the burgers!!! I have been involved with 7 elk packing episodes, never a moose though. Not an easy task especially when your body has some age on it.
Live 2Hunt, you calling me old?
Hoot, I think I was really smiling when I reached the truck on the last load. The middle loads not so much. Definitely not smiling when I woke up the next morning until the Ibuprofen took hold.
Well, no? I was referring to, hey a squirrel!!!
Trapper Of course I remember, the west shore caviar ring media coverage makes it hard to forget.
You don’t see DNR biologists fired very often.
