Opening Day Rifle/Shotgun

Good luck to everyone. For those still bow don’t forget your orange.
Haven’t seen anything yet this morning. And I’ve only heard 1 shot; opening day used to sound like WW3….deer movement at property has been slow past week. Before that I had deer moving like crazy on cameras.
Slow here in Coventry. Only 2 shots. Bizzarr. Heard a couple dogs barking nearby, usually tells me that the deer are nearby. We'll see
Crossbows.
I forget where I saw the data, but Firearms tag sales have been dropping like crazy since crossbows got included.
Pretty safe bet that all the most hardcore of the shotgunners have switched over so they can hunt the first half of the month, so the “shotgun season” pressure probably started about 2 weeks ago.
You’d think that at some point the shotgunners would raise hell over crossbows on public land during archery season. They already have all of the Public land carved up into various little pieces, so you might think it’d be pretty straightforward to say that crossbows aren’t allowed onto ANY of it, or at least not until the Shotgun seasons have ended.
The worst thing Deep ever did was allow crossguns to the masses. It should’ve stayed to handicaps and people over 50.
I assume that is a question? Years ago you had physical tags that had your license number on it. You would have to punch out the month and day on the tag and attach it to the deer upon killing it, until cut up for consumption. Before that, you would have to bring it to a check station.
I enjoyed going to check station - see what others got, hear the stories etc. too bad deep did ask for volunteers- I sure some career minded collage kids or older guys would do- heck I would after I got mine lol
Soap, something like this..I think this was the last year issued
Yeah I remember the physical tags we had. They were blue. Good old days. As well as deer check stations. I brought plenty to northeast taxidermy.
Not me.... correct..... are you gonna eat that cookie?
I highly doubt anyone is gonna drop their shotgun/rifle for a crossbow. Nice deer Woodsnut!
Shot 3 coyotes on stand this morning .3rd one was floating in waste deep water

Great job WBeast. Saved a lot of Deer and Turkeys in the future
Awesome Wilga, what's the story?
Well I was sitting in my stand on state land . It’s an oak island in the middle of a swamp . Have to wear hip boots to access it . Between very thick bedding and some agg fields. The bucks usually bed on the island in the fall and the does bed in the thick stuff to the East . I can shoot 100+ yards in 360 degrees . So it’s a great gun and bow stand. I was sitting there rite after first light and texted my buddy saying “ I can hear some splashing something is coming from my left” about 5 minutes later I caught movement 130 yards to my left . Pick up the scope and see 6 dogs milling through the swamp . Letting them come and then the lead dog takes a hard left and the pack starts following away. So it was now or never . Braces against the tree held steady and squeezed one off . The lead dog dropped . The other 5 ran at me . I let them get to 30 yards and lip squeaked to stop them , smoked the second one rite behind the ear . The rest took off running . One made the mistake of running around the island and right under me . 14 yards smoked her too . 3 dogs down 3 to go . Shot a big one in September from this same stand with the bow
Oh didn’t mention the first shot on the lead dog , put the range finder on it’s dead body and it was 111 yards . Pretty happy with that , now I know the 12 guage and accutips are still dead on

Wilga, good shooting with your shotgun. I'm inundated with 'yotes and hope I get a shot at one this AM. Had a couple of encounters on the ground with them in the dark and am seriously thinking of concentrating on them after deer season. They're on my radar screen for sure. Do you take the pelts ?
Not now don’t start keeping furnuntill the end of December

Get them dogs. Saved a few deer and other critters
Congrats!! Lot's of action at you're Honey Hole!
Wilga, Congratulations, nice buck and job well done on those dogs.
Thanks guys. I’ve had quite a year in mass and ct with the bow too
Congrats!! Great shooting!
I was lucky to get one of my target Bucks. Have 3-4 year's of pictures of him. 11 pt that weighs a lot, thank God for my sled as I was alone.
Wow! That’s an awesome deer! Congrats.
Way to go Steve!! That's a great buck.
I went today and didn't see a thing, not even a tree rat. The most disappointing thing was when I got down and did some scouting,.....no fresh sign, just lots of bear and coyote poop, something I haven't seen in this area before. Going to need to change things up next time out.
Garrett, Steve, congrats to both of you. Hell of a buck Steve.
I seen a lone doe fawn this afternoon, less than a minute after sitting down. She got a pass.
Congrats Steve . Fricken stud

Nice buck. - be on my wall for sure
Congrats to both of you guys..nice deer for sure!!!
“ I highly doubt anyone is gonna drop their shotgun/rifle for a crossbow.“
Not necessarily drop the shotgun, but certainly ADD the crossgun. But firearms tag sales are cratering and archery tags are up and all you see in the stores are x-bows.
Or maybe I’m just hallucinating….
Congratulations guys on some very nice bucks! And coyotes as well.
Nice bucks guys! And I’m pretty curious as to why coyotes would swim in a swamp I did not think they would do that.
I put a cell camera on my gut pile and only one coyote is on it.
Looks like he grabbed the lungs and liver, only Raven's on it now. Bear's must have hibernated as this place is loaded with Bear's.
Fantastic deer guys! Keep on those yotes. Had a bear climb the apple tree in my yard a few days ago. Got to bed! Lol
These two Bucks are following a Hot Doe. Walking out of a big field into the woods.
Taken this morning.
Great deer guys! Congratulations
