The Elk that has been around Portage with photos and videos made the papers and online the last few days cool hey! Thus is what isn't cool. The DNR saying it moved south from Black River Falls Duh you think. It gets worse they said in their statement that the collar is no longer working. Why tell people that?? Two days before gun season!! Ya don't worry if you shoot it we can't track it cause the collar is Kaput. Dumb Dumb and Dummer
I rarely trust the words of a govt agency. Even if they are stupid.
I think two hunters last year shot elk. They were honest and called it in, which I admire. But seriously it's ridiculous. You also read stories of a hunter accidently shooting a human "I thought it was a deer". It's amazing that people just see something they can't identify and then fire a rifle at it, assuming it's a deer.
I thought last year a women shot 2 elk during the 9 day deer gun season. Shot 1 in the morning, then the 2nd elk that afternoon.
I bet this one gets smoked. I am very familiar with the territory it is in. Very rural, lots of huge woodlots large cattail swamps ag fields and a ton of state land. French creek public hunting is huge not sure but it's over 20 sections at least. Lots of deer hunters private and public. My guess is it gets it. Hope we find out
There was one on trail cam near Thorp, WI on November 3. Not common for that area and I'm sure it's already in somebody's freezer.
The lady shot both spikes together. Shot one that dropped then shot the second one thinking she was shooting at the same one.
This is the bull down south. Came by a bow hunter I know. Note the arrow,
I have no link to the following but I received 2 separate text that the southern bull was killed this morning. Dumb Ass
Dead, was on a DNR trailer.
That's what one text said.
Ive also heard DNR tranq'ed it to move it back to the herd??? Hopefully thats the case
Grunter,, hope your correct. Talked to one of tge texters he has not heard that. He lives in that area.
After the animal has been in a CWD area the DNR will not allow it to return to it's non- CWD home grounds.
DMR has confirmed it was killed illegally at 7 am yesterday. Not much for other details.
Unbelievable.... how in the heck do you mistake an elk for a deer. Another case of "itchy trigger finger!"
Happens every year. The only reason more elk aren't shot is because more "hunters" don't see one to shoot at.... Another black eye for hunting. Disgusting. Should be license revocation for life.....
There is absolutely no excuse for this.
There is absolutely no excuse for this.
I thought it was gonna get it. Knowing the area it is in. But only after the season was open for a walloping 30 didn't surprise me. Not that area.
No news on any charges or anything in this elk. No nothing or statements. Crickets. Thru the grapevine I heard it was a 22 year old man who moved from Florida up here. He lives in Pardeeville and drive thru town with it on a trailer in open view. Was not the DNR trailer. That is the scuttlebut I heard. Any one know more details?
Guy from Columbus just finished his case for shooting a cow elk almost three years ago. Deer drive he shot it. His hunting partners told him he needed to report it. He said screw that and left for home. His fine was over $6500.00 and loss of all license rights for 5 years. With the compact he loses rights in all states that belong also
Good that he looses all his hunting license rights. Glad that he looses rights in other states too. Anyone know what other states the person looses hunting rights too, and for how long?
The compact states. I'll see if I can find it.
Every state except Hawaii and Massachusetts. Massachusetts is in process of joining. Just Google wildlife violation compact agreement. Or Wiki it
Any more on this? Location, and the person responsible? Seems pretty hush hush!
Seems like there was far more info when he was walking around, than on the illegal harvest??
Funny, I ran into one of the tag holders a few weeks ago in the EC county forest. He got a nice 5x5 and was going to help one of the other tag holders when it opens again.
I just saw this on a bear website. This is a post from the snapshot program. My wife and I volunteered this year for the snapshot Wisconsin program. The DNR places the cameras and all you do is check them and download the SD card. You can’t see the pictures because the SD card is crypted. The DNR should let the volunteers checking the cameras assist in the placement. Its really frustrating that the first trip out to check the cameras and you immediately realize it’s placed in a useless spots.
Interesting Hoot, did not know there was such a program.
Hoot, what's the purpose of the program, and curious why you would volunteer if you are unable to view what the camera captures? Does the department provide a reasoning for the encryption?

I think the reason why they let others check is they are under staffed and make the general public feel like they are doing something important. I would do the same thing checking and pulling cards if I lived in the area, I just enjoy being out in the woods. If they went with cell cameras they could elevate the help from others with no intrusion to the area’s other than changing out batteries once in awhile.
Snapshot Wisconsin is a partnership to monitor wildlife year-round using a statewide network of trail cameras. The project provides data needed for wildlife management decision support. Snapshot Wisconsin is also a unique opportunity for individuals, families and students to get involved in monitoring the state’s valuable natural resources.
The main goals of Snapshot Wisconsin are to:
Provide data necessary for wildlife management decisions by monitoring wildlife more consistently across the state and throughout the year. Increase public engagement with Wisconsin's natural resources and the DNR.
I thought at the time the CDAC was a great public engagement also
Kind of crappy that the Dnr chooses which pictures the public is allowed to see though. Lets them push their own agenda. Also kind of ironic that my camera got confiscated for not having my name on it, but none of the state cameras are identified. I've also seen a few in close proximity to illegal salt licks. Whether the state is aware of that or not I don't know but not sure that state employees always place them.
smokey's Link
A couple of things to correct. The DNR doesn't place the cameras, the volunteer places and checks them. The photos are encrypted so photos of people are not made public for privacy reasons. Cameras only need ID on them on State lands and a few County lands.
I have found a few on the Chequamegon. One was right where I parked for hunting. The elk walk past that spot a lot, as do wolves, deer, bear, bobcat, and people.
I just saw this on a web site. Charges were filed in Illegal elk shooting. A 24 year old Portage man has been charged with the illegal elk shooting in Columbia County.
A 24-year-old Portage man has been charged with illegally shooting an elk during deer season last fall.
Chase Steinhoff is charged with unlawful hunting of an elk-- a misdemeanor. Court documents state Steinhoff was hunting with a family member on Nov. 20 when he shot and killed the elk. The elk did have ear tags and was wearing a tracking collar.
Steinhoff told investigators he believed he was shooting a white-tailed buck.
Steinhoff’s father promptly called the DNR to report the incident.
A clerical court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 8.
I saw my first elk while turkey hunting this spring and she had a collar. Blows my mind how people can make this mistake. There should be steep fine involved for these shooters.
I was sitting here trying to figure out what an "elk turkey" was, too funny.
There was that lady the other year that shot two different bulls, and thought it was the was the same whitetail buck that she shot once, then came back a few minutes later, uninjured and with different antlers. And there's that man in CO that mistook a bowhunter for an elk. Some folks...
You don't know what an Elkturkey is? Lol.. I fixed it.. haha
