I know it’s not a bow kill and will probably be taken down , but I got a B&C mule deer in CO this week. I used 24 points to apply for tag this spring but didn’t draw. They only give out 20 tags total , 5 being NR for this hunt. 10 days before season started I got an e-mail from CO game and fish that a tag had been turned in and I was next on list and had 24 hours to decide if I wanted it.

I started building a rifle 3 years ago. Bought a Browning Hells canyon with McMillion stock in 6.5 creedmoor. Sent it to Best of the West in Cody , WY last winter to get a Huskemaw scope with dial up turrets built to a Hornady 143 gr ELD-X. I practiced some this summer .not as much as I would have if I knew I would be hunting out west this fall. Part of it was just finding enough ammo.

We saw several bucks . Some with good fronts but weak backs, some with good backs but weak fronts. I was looking for one that had good backs, good fronts, and good width. The one I got had all 3, he was 28 inches wide.

I spotted a group of deer here. It was about a mile away. My guide put spotting scope on them and saw a good buck but we needed to get closer.

We had to go across a sagebrush flat and climb that red ridge and go to the end of it. It was a pinyon , cedar, and juniper covered ridge

We found them. There was the buck I got, another smaller 4x4, and 4 does. They were in the process of bedding down by the time we got there

He bedded down about 10 am. We sat on him until 3:30 when he finally got up and started moving. He was across a canyon at 360 yards. I had got my rifle set up with as good of a rest I could have shooting over sagebrush. When he stopped broadside I shot. He jumped and ran forward about 30 yds, stopped and fell over
