A different world
Massachusetts

We’ve been doing some hunting in NH this year (totally unproductive), and I had an interesting recent experience. One camera up there needed batteries. So I went to the store to get some, wearing my hunting costume. I wouldn’t do that in eastern MA to begin with—but my point is, the lady behind the counter said “are the batteries for your camera?” Except that it seems pretty slim in the deer department, New Hampshire would probably be a nice place to live.
The country is pretty normal when you get away from places like Massachusetts.
Haha pete nailed it. But yes Jeb, NH is an amazing place to live. It just seems that the vast majority of people are normal reasonable people and overall very friendly. Experiences like yours here are rather common.
Well in western ma of the land where there be dragons i have found people to be accepting of hunting for the most part. And at the NY camp holy crap your weird if you don't hunt.
Yup, people confuse New York with 'the Big Apple.' lots of nice folks upstate. Even in central MA, camo doesn't get much negative vibe.
Pete nailed it! I had some real culture shock when I moved to mass 10 years ago and realized not everyone was on the "live free or die" train.
I like Merle Haggard's song , Big City, and all that it implies.
This year for Memorial Day I went to New York by myself to turkey hunt for a weekend. I didn’t see a soul most days and no one cared what I was up to. There were tens of thousands of acres to hunt. There was a campground (state forest) with lots of horses and I walked through and no one cared. It’s possible I could’ve had an experience like that in MA but there was something bizarre or odd about just doing whatever I wanted and not having a person ask what the hell i’m doing. Even the horse People didn’t even say anything beyond a friendly hello. So yes jeb I get It. Sometimes you want to rock your costume and not have the Mom shield Brayden’s eyes from the horror that is red neck.
Must be nice to live where people understand .
Growing up in a town with, most likely, near as many cow's as people, and thousands and thousands of acres of huntable woods... In MA... Nah, it's totally cool out here. You are more likely to get a "see any" or "My son/friend/dad etc shot a..." than any negative commentary.
In suburban areas that starts to change and I feel weird. But "most" of mass, land wise... it's cool.
Pi and I agree on something again, and that's worth celebrating ha ha ha!
To be fair, the huge majority of my interactions in eastern MA have been positive. Just last night I was suiting up on the back edge of a commercial parking lot, and some lady was curious (in a positive way) what I was up to. She asked a few questions out of genuine interest, and then wished me luck.
Women love a man in uniform
Nah. I have a face only a mother could love. Thankfully my wife’s eyesight is very poor.
BD win's the internet for today :)!
Oh dear god, the big populous state argument. Please! In CA it's legal to to be 23 years old and have a 14 year old girlfriend. It's not illegal to show her porn to get her in the mood. Then if you knowingly giver her AIDS it's only a misdemeanor. YAY CA!!!! But hey, at least the economy is great!!! Las Cruces, El Paso? Yeah seeing hunters even in the Airport of El Paso is not unusual. Las Cruces...did someone say Elk Hunting central? I can go on but the one thing that all of those poor cities have in common...the residents don't think that being an asshole is a "Quality", or "Just Culture". If you want to get into "What is normal" and how great MA is....dude, we live in the first state to pass a law on integrating schools but we were the last state to actually implement it. Every Racist southern state beat us to the punch, and then when it was finally forced upon us you had 30-40 year old men and women beating the FUCK out of black 3rd graders. Just ask your Mee-Mah and Pop Pop about it. they were there throwing haymakers into the guts of 10 and 11 year olds...black children. Your parents and grandparents beat the hell out of black children for wanting an education...in the 1970s....BEST THAT'S 70s SHOW EPISODE EVER!!!! There's nothing even remotely close to that kind of history in the Poor areas listed above. The other thing all of those places have in common is the fact that they will be the heavy industry areas of tomorrow. See, all of those places you listed sit on massive beds of rare earth metals. It's illegal to mine those areas because of two people, Nancy Pilosi and Diane Fienstein. See, Feinstein's husband is huge in the rare earth metal business, and additional mines would collapse the industry, soooo Fienstein campaigned to prevent mining in CA due to environmental reasons...had nothing to do with her husband...sure. Then, her friend Pilosi created a large push with multiple state senators to button that shit up in their states as well. Thus, what could be major industry, isn't.
Finally, who was it that bailed out of MA and ran to Montana? The guy who sends us glorious pics of his hunting life out there? My point is that not a lot of people choose to retire in MA. Oh sure some people have nowhere else to go, but when it comes to being given an option, why do so many retirees flee? That's not normal. What about people fleeing the "Great Economy" that is CA for TX, ID, OR, NC, SC, and FL? That doesn't seem normal. They're so rich in CA....I'm confused.
You want to know what's normal? Being able to buy beer at a grocery store. How's that working out? You know what's normal? Not being physically assaulted by Wellesly grad Karens for being in a hunting jacket. We live in a state where those same white Karens can assault people, call minority police officers N@#@Rs to their faces and nothing happens to them 'cept for people calling them "Brave" and "Warriors". Yeah, that shit doesn't fly in most other places.
Finally, there are a lot of minorities in the poor places identified above....I'm not saying, I'm just saying...a normal place doesn't seem to have a system in place to hide all the black people...you know like MA seems to.
Anyhow, happy whatever this thread was originally about.
I will say this regarding NH...whenI first bought property up there 11 years ago...I saw maybe one Posted sign. now the entire road up to my dirt road is posted. ...a buddy of mine that used to rifle hunt up there also noticed the same thing. lots more posted land....at least in southern NH, the mood is slowly swinging against us. initial thought was that could be MAssholes moving north to escape the tax thing, but that doesn't work. Property tax in NH is on the ridiculous side, and if they're living in NH and working in MA they're getting a double whammy..high property and high income tax.
All the original poster was saying I believe. Is it different or normal living out there in witch I believe to be true. The words "hustle and bustle" have no meaning out there. It's just an played back sorta living out there that's all. I lived in Cali for a few years when I was younger and the people were different. Painfully nice. Me being a masshole and all. I can see exactly what he's Talk in bout. You can blame mass for sucking due to the politics but at the end of the day ...it sucks because of the politics. Like let's catch a woman in some political electoral position on tape excepting a bribe. Arrested then reelected for the same job later on. I mean that's just Ludacris. So the beliefs and the political stand point of most majority of the minority is f___ed up and in turn makes this state suck. Nevermind the drivers with the common sense of a slug. People the high speed lane is just that. It's a passing lane. Not for cruising at 65. Move over ! And shut your fu__ing high beams off. And by the by have a simple thought once in a while of the guy behind you and how you are the one f___ing up the system not just in driving in life to. Sasso can do it so can I. !
Good baked beans, though. And terriers.
Damn Noob, you are frigging right on. Well, about the beans. Terriers are cute and all, but sorta annoying ankle biters.
I like living here. It's nice. Lots of woods. 90' and I can be at mountains or oceans. Everywhere has good and bad to it. Even Florida. I mean that state is frigging crazy. Read a paper or watch the news: "woman arrested for wrestling a python she trapped in a fire hose and fed meth for 5 days while wearing an Elmer Fud costume she purchased with a stolen cancer donation jar from the local gas station..." You see a title like that, and it's like 97.8% from Florida. I mean, I love to visit there. The saltwater fishing is awesome. But it's got some crazy son of a gun's for dang sure! Sorry, I digress for pure entertainment purposes.
That said, I do think, generally speaking, as Jeb experienced, the more rural the area, the more hunting is generally considered a good / normal thing. What you are used to, you are used to...
