Really been putting this off a couple years but boy this year has been rough hearing deer. More often than not they just appear. When I do hear them they are usually under 20 yds. Wife and boys have been on me so I currently as of yesterday are demo-ing a pair of hearing aids. Tried them yesterday afternoon for a sit. Hated it. Everything sounds abnormally loud. Just my head net noise from moving my head sounded like someone sanding with 60 grit in my ear. Any of you guys using them when you hunt? Any advice? I’ve only got 9 days left to my NH season to figure this out……
Pro, I have them and glad I do. Give it sometime and you will get use to them. Sounds real loud at first because you've been missing most of that sound for a long time. My good wife was telling me for years that I needed them but I put it off. As usual, she was right haha. It will improve your hunt and every other part of your life.
Hey noob, I went to an audiologist last week for the ringing. They did a few tests that show I have minor hearing loss. The ringing can be reduced they say by a hearing aid that will provide white noise. The Doc recommended some blood work to see if I have had Lyme. When I told him I've been bit and infected 3 times he said that the ringing may be caused from a tick bite......... Fn ticks! Good luck, Lets' go
I’m having a very hard time hearing this year. Ever since I had COVID the hearing in my right ear is basically gone. Put a winter hat on and forget it. Doctor said could be a bit before my ear goes back to normal.. sucks for sure
Geeze Pi. You must need hearing aids or new ones if you have them lol. I can’t imagine not hearing deer when hunting. Before my hearing loss I often heard deer long before I saw them esp if they were behind me. Now the deer often just appear and catch me off guard. I do have volume control which is easily managed thru the app on my phone. Funny about the white noise mentioned above. I can hear that with the volume turned up. That’s an irritation to me. I’m running them just below the level where I hear that. I feel like they fixate on some noises. Like last night I was watching tv fine and my wife tore off a good two feet of packing tape off the roll. Man that was loud. Jumped up from chair as I had no idea what it was. I’ll hang in there and keep trying. I will say the cost of hearing aids is ridiculous. With no insurance coverage it’s a major kick in the pants. Also sux not having others to demo and compare to. I may need to that though before I lay out the cash.
Being a former rock musician, Steelworker, knifesmith, etc...and never having worn hearing protection....I definitely have some tinnitus going on. I'm sure someday soon I'll be getting fitted up for some kind of aid. For now I can hear reasonably well in the woods. If there is any kind of background noise, leaf blower, loud chatter at a party, wife trying to tell me something important, That's when I have difficulty LOL
I just got one for my left ear. I think it helps me focus on the various sounds in the forest, but, yes, lots of noises I didn't otherwise hear. I find the hearing aid way better than using electronic earmuffs or other Hearing Assistive Devices like that - likely the better technology of the hearing aid. Stick with it - you'll get used to it.
i lost 90% of my hearing in my right ear in a freak accident a few years back.. constant ringing now as well. I had a surgery to try to repair/patch the ear drum, but it didn't work. During bow season I wear my hearing aid in the right ear. If I don't, I cannot tell where the deer are coming from... If I even hear one coming... it will sound like it's on my left side, but be on the right etc. The hearing aid helps dramatically. BUT, i do not wear it during gun season, esp with snow, because the gun blast is too loud with it in. It does not block out loud noises. I have worn it turkey hunting... it helps, but I need to try to take it out when a bird is working in because I have shot a few with it in and it hurts! haha
This is interesting stuff. I'm only 41 but hearing loss definitely runs in my family. I have constant ringing in my ears, pretty loud. When it's a quiet calm day in the woods, it drives me nuts! If there is enough wind it's not as noticeable or drowns it out. I never really noticed it was so bad until I started hunting about 8 years ago. If I'm working from home or trying to go to sleep I definitely need some background or white noise to drown it out. I've been to ENT specialists and they can't figure out what's wrong with my ears, ran all kinds of tests. If you guys are saying hearing aids might get rid of this ringing sign me up! Maybe I'd actually hear the deer coming too haha. And yes my wife says I'm deaf too.
My hearing aid definitely helps to minimize the ringing in my damaged ear.... definitely worth trying. I'm 43... was a bit self conscious of it at first, but what the hell... quality of life is better with it. Just sucks wearing these masks with it!
BC nailed it. When I clean my kids hearing aids, I use a little stethoscope thing to check them when done. It sounds soooo loud, but to them it sounds correct... you will acclimate.
Too much loud rock and roll and too much shooting without ear protection when I was younger has given me screaming tinnitus. If I am in a noisy environment like a bar with music and a group of us is talking I am lost. The din of the crowd makes it almost impossible for me to understand what people are saying. But it seems my tinnitus comes and goes, or I have just learned to tune it out at times.
Yea I went to way too many concerts with no ear protection. I wear it now when I go to a show and my ears still ring bad for a couple days. Pi and others, lots of good info here. Not only do I learn about hunting on this forum, I also get a free ear consultation!
Thanks for all the help. Glad I don’t having the ringing situation to deal with……that only seemed to bother me after The Who concerts…..well and the AC/DC shows lol.
I destroyed my ears at metal shows, playing in bands, and shooting without ear protection when I was younger. The accident that blew out my ear drum just finished things for me...
Ungie, my kids and I watched a documentary about Metallica Sunday night. I felt like I'd finally reached a higher level of Daddom. Bringing along the next generation well. That early Metallica was (is) soooooo good.
I was just talking about that with my wife last night, Will. After binging the Get Back Beatles doc on Disney +, we were talking about how many musicians have been influenced by them over the years....and I offered same with Metallica. non of those late 90s numetal bands would have existed without them.
I like Metallica, just always thought they were a little too Pop. I'm sitting in the eye doc's office now and the ringing is LOUD! So thought this thread is funny timing. I was a roadie for metal bands through the 80's, that prolly explains it a bit. But I can still hear deer, sort of, usually when they're blowing at me.
metallica, slayer, anthrax... all started the modern metal trend... but before that Sabbath, Zeppelin, etc... heavy before heavy was cool. I can't say i like much of the new metal. All overly produced and rip off the above.. the only newer band I am really into is Gojira... love em... actually came out of concert retirement late October to go see them crush Albany... it was epic.
Famous people of every walk of life have had impacts on civ./culture. But i could be wrong as usual. W. Civ. doesn't rely on music alone but its influence is certainly reflected in some of the populations' mores. It's out of my pay grade to further expound. Just sayin' .
BD, it's a fair question, and I wasnt being totally sarcastic. They tended to look at things they felt were wrong in the world, and use those as catalysts for songs, but did the same with their own troubles. I think for many, they (and similar bands, like my simultaneous enjoyment of the Dead Kennedy's, Sex Pistols, Misfits, etc) just were a step in that realization that you are independent and that you want space and to prove your "selfness" so to speak... But then the energy/joy/passion/fun you felt listening sort of take over. When I listen to a Metallica song or Ozzy or Sabbath or DK etc, it's just the energy, passion, and joy I remember. And a style I find entertaining.
Then again, Ill enjoy some good old school rap, some blue grass or folk, funk and even some pop as well. There is a really popular Dua Lipa song that is on the radio all the time this past year or so I will freely admit I have to listen to every time it comes on. It just sounds cool, I'm not even sure what she's talking about.
Point being, I LOVE metal, and Metallica in particular, but I like a lot of styles. There is something really cool to experience when enjoying them all - it's amazing humans can create that stuff!
Dua lipa she a singer ? I thought she was just all over Google news in bikinis and other not much there clothing. I can't or don't know how to pronounce her name but she is really put together well
Being a young teen in d'a 80s I was into the heavy hair bands. Metallica skid row tesla iron maiden guns n roses. X m radio I can always go back in time and remember. Although I was tuned into that still I liked the piano man and the rocket man 2 quite different music. Uninterested in much new music except some 5 finger death punch. Some volbeat. Rock n roll is fading with most younger people.
Pi, give me a few more years blasting metal into my skull, and I might be able to contribute.
You guys keep coming in with the heaters! I also love UTA. I'm sure some of you have heard their Stan Rogers cover of Northwest Passage. It's so good. I think I've come to the conclusion that I prefer metal bands with female vocalists, they tend to be able to actually sing as opposed to many metal bands that just scream inaudibly.
Pi, this is the music that actually causes hearing impairment. The only time I ever heard it in person was at Sloppy Joe's in Key West. We were real close to the band and I could feel the low notes of the bass guitar vibrate in my sternum. I panicked and asked the person next to me if that was normal and he said, "yup". What it temporarily did to my hearing was whole other story.
This did go off the rails a little, but again probably why we're talking about hearing loss haha sorry Pro. JINJER is awesome. The first time I heard that song a few years ago on Sirius in my truck on Route 2 I assumed it was 2 singers. Then when I first found it on youtube and watched that video my mind was blown! She's amazing. Gojira is great too, as with all the other bands mentioned above. I just picked up 2 tickets to the Iron Maiden show at the DCU next October and can't wait. They're definitely one of the best live bands I've ever seen. It's not metal or Dua Lipa, but I'm a big fan of Clutch. Another great live band.
Let's be clear about some violent rap lyrics, and the uninhibited behavior of SOME of today's pop groups:it's attention getting but it isn't good. I recently saw a Youtube vid of a current group (the name escapes me) where an idiot from the audience ran up on stage and lay down and the lead singer pulled down her pants, straddled him and pee'd in his face (and she had a full bladder) ; then she tenderly told him to get f--k out of here. This would not have happened at a C+W concert for example . I guess it's whatever floats your boat. Maybe the guy needed a water boarding,LOL.
I was soooo close to going to see Jinjer back in November, but I didn't want to blow my hearing out during the rut. Jokes on me, I barely saw or heard a deer after the first week of November.
Will, I love how she can transition from the deep growl to the highest cleanest note in her range and right back to the growl.
Will, it's the dark side of current Metal or whatever it's called. A friend sent it and I'm not over it yet. It shouldn't be too hard to pull up. Even the guys in her band were blowing their minds. You can imagine how the availability of this to kids is perverse and creates a bad image of an entire musical genre. I'm far from prudish but this tops Ozzy biting the head off some kind of living thing ; then requiring the rabies shots.
Lunker ,it was so bad they probably removed it. Over the years I've been to C-W concerts and met some of the most solid people ever. Also been to R-B, classical, rock n' roll and more. My family are all very musical and it's an important thing in our lives. I'm hoping her behavior is not a metaphor for what could be our social decline. Hoping.
Reminds me of this Dave Chapelle skit from back in the day when he made fun of R. Kelly after it came out that he was in to peeing on people. Okay sorry, now this thread is seriously off the rails.
Ugg. That is disgusting Big. Not sure what either party was thinking in that event….Pi - country music doesn’t exist anymore it’s just an offshoot of Pop. Once Taylor Swift was considered Country it went off the rails….I’m going to go grab a beer and listen to to some CCR….
Proline , Today's C+W can't compare with the likes of Marty Robbins, George Jones,Patsy Kline, Merle Haggard ,Tammy Wynette ,and even Allan Jackson stayed true to his country roots. Today I like Jon Pardi and the group Midland but few others.Taylor Swift is about as country as Georgio Amani and is so self absorbed that I can't take watching her for any length of time though my wife thinks she's a talent. We got a record player for 45's and 33's and have stacks of oldies so we're good.
The new wife got me into county. I couldn't stand it before her. Eric Church is a good mix of rock and country. We saw him the fourth time last week . He puts on a great show . No opening act and plays for at least three hours.
I’m also in the same boat as you all have had hearing loss for many years and just lost more as of 2weekends ago when I shot my deer for some reason the sound from the shot gun took more hearing away find me now both ears are bad looking into aplafiers or hearing aids anyone have good advice on good hearing aids
Captain , you're not alone. You might first find out your degree of hearing loss. Like you, I had one incident which furthered my hearing loss. I still don't wear aids but they are probably in my future. Good luck restoring your hearing and merry Christmas
Captain, It's about 45-50' for you, but get an appointment at Hear Smart Audiology in Littleton. They are awesome. Get a test, learn your loss pattern, and then figure out the best aid option. You may consider a "game ear" style thing too. They amplify some sound and muffle others - so the bang from the gun for example is muffled, while the little crunch crunch of an approaching deer is amplified. Pretty cool tech.
