Any more it’s hard to believe how fast time is flying by - hard to believe we are just about 3 months away from bow season! Still have a ton of stuff to get done by then!
Hope everyone is having a great Summer…..
It is. I’m super busy building a new cabin. Trying to have it done by September.
I’ve improved some saddle gear. I love this style of hunting!!! I Bought a set of Skeltor climbing sticks from tethrd. a phantom saddle, some wild edge steps, a knaider and swaider to climb them with, and a new hybrid longbow.
I’m so excited. I am going to hunt a new area this year close to home. A state forest that has done some serious TSI work over the last 10 years. And, the deer are responding.
I’m also going to commit to killing a deer with my longbow in the mon forest this year. And, Logan and Minho county, here I come.
If everything goes to plan, early deer by mid October close to home. 4-5 days mid October to first of November in the mon forest. And three weeks in my old stomping grounds in the coal fields. I figure three deer and a bear with the longbow by gun season is reasonable. LOL
Good luck Mountaineer!!! I am hoping to have much more time in the woods this year than what I had last year!
Me too. I hunted three sits from opening day until gun season. I’m looking forward to cutting my phone off and getting into the woods.
good luck guys. I am almost done the inside of the new cabin. Should have it ready by the opener. It will take me a year or so to learn the deer on this new piece of ground but I will figure them out. Already seeing a couple trophy spikes.
Have any pics of your build progress on the cabin?
Yea.. I’ll. Dig through my phone and post em
Did you sell your farm in Randolph county JR? If so, where you at now?
The old one was in Pendleton county and yes I sold it. The new one is a little closer for me in Mineral county right outside of Romney just cross the Hampshire county line.
Mountaineer - JR has been showing me some pics of the deer at the new place - the spikes have much more mass here than at his old place!
I bet. The mountains of eastern WV can grow sone nice deer. However, it’s regular to kill a three to four year old deer with a 100” rack. It’s just nutrient poor ground. And, the nutrients are used for the body. With little left over for antlers typically.
True that mtneer. And you can eat the horns no matter how small they are.
Actually JR a I think in some place they do ground up the antlers and use it as a supplement now LOL
I finally got my madrock safeguard in today. Been tinkering with a figure 8 repelling. I decided to go with the madrock so I don’t have to unhook while in the tree.
I ordered a Big Bob one stick too from ooal. My saddle and one stick platform is going to come in well under 10 pounds. Not much different then my sticks and ring of steps. But, the one stick packs up a lot smaller for the long walks.
This year is going to be really fun Lord willing. I get to repel every single time I get out of the tree. I truly don’t know why I haven’t done it earlier. Safest way to hunt. Tethered in from the time I leave the ground until I get back on it.
I’m going to get in the woods pretty heavy in the next month and a half. It’s getting close. Best thing I’ve seen so far is red oak on peters mountain. Pretty good crop on the top. Should be great hunting.
I’m getting excited!!!!
When repelling down, how do you remove the rope once on the ground?
I hook a piece of dynamite glide to the repelling line right behind the quick link. I just tug on it a bit and it loosened the girth hitch on the tree and the whole unit slides to the ground. Easy peasy.
In the case I’ve went around limbs, I just keep pulling until I run the quick link out over the tag end.
The dyna glide serves as a pull up rope for my bow too.

Here’s a link to the exact line I use.
