2022 Kansas Meat Pole
Kansas
Contributors to this thread:
Well folks, the Kansas deer season has once again graced us with its presence. The days are getting shorter, and the temps more crisp. Soon the leaves will begin to fall, and our dreams of rutting bucks will become reality. I pray that we all have a safe, successful, and blessed hunting season. With that said, it’s time to head out amongst ‘em, fling some arrows, and get some meat hung on the pole! Best of luck to all, and share pictures of your successful harvests here.
Good luck everyone…..y’all enjoy them skeeters. See y’all in November:)
Got to have rain to have skeeters!

Got her done TJ, tell me about that arrow?
I was going to ask the same thing... kind of a new one for arrow placement. Not being critical (I had a deer spin on me once and I shot him right in the butt. Got lucky and hit the femoral artery and went down in 150yds) just curious?
Broken off arrow laying up against the deer?
Yes, broken end of the shaft just laying there. It was a quartering to shot taken from the ground at 20 yds. Entry is on the other side. That is what snapped off when she crashed. She only went 40 or so yds.

Not Kansas, but went guided in CO with my brother. Even then, shot the first critter in range Day 1 of the hunt. 5 hours later, he shot a cow as well which was his first ever archery animal! Awesome experience to share with him and very grateful to have those memories!
Pretty friggin cool, and some good eatin!
Them elk are good vittles! Congrats!
A really nice cold front moving in over the next couple of days. Methinks some good bucks will be hanging on the meat pole very soon!
I had a little lock Sunday at our farm. She came in about 7:30 and gave me a 12 yard shot. I heard her crash after a short run. The arrow was a Douglas fir wood arrow tipped with a Magnus 4 blade head. The bow was a 62" Wild Horse Creek Destiny longbow. I love having venison in the freezer early in the season. --Mike
Heck ya Mike, enjoy the "fruits"!
You’re not going to believe Mike but I was just thinking about you earlier this morning wondering if you’ve been out in the woods yet.
Congrats and nicely done. Love you’re style from the clothes you wear hunting and the bows you make.
Great job! That's some tasty eating for sure.
Great job Mike. Nice doe.
Happy for ya Mike….good eating for sure!
I can’t ever remember carrying a deer out over my shoulder with one hand!
I can’t ever remember carrying a deer out over my shoulder with one hand!
Went to Maryland and spent a week hunting Sika Deer in the marshes around Chesapeake bay, crabbing and fishing. These deer are tiny and I was able to fill my two tags for hinds but never had a stag in range. I ate my fill of blue crabs and oysters and enjoyed a very unique hunt.
Boy Packrat you have to be a good shot to hit such a small target! I knew they were small but, didn't realize they were that small.
So cool Shawn, a tiny trophy!
Shawn great hunt and great pic. Thx for sharing your success with us!
Thank you all! I shot one of those little deer at 30 yards and the other at 15. They were pass through shots! Imagine that.
Congratulations, sounds like it was a fun week.
You had me at blue crabs and oysters!
For a second there looking at your picture, I thought you had went to Texas or down South to hunt Shawn lol
Shawn, Way to go. That's a hunt that few will do.
Yeah I doubt I’ll ever get that chance…congrats. Looks like fun all around.
Never been done in October before! 1st hunt of the year and 1st ever hunt from a saddle was successful. This guy came in and chased away a doe/fawns from around the oak I was in before returning to begin gorging himself on acorns... for a short time ;)
Nice Dan, bet he was a tree shredder!
Way to go Dan! Great buck!
That’s what I’m talking about. Congrats Dan.
I weighed him before he was gutted…300lbs. Biggest body deer I’ve ever shot.
Wow his body does look huge. Not too shabby on the horns either…like how the beams wrap around. Congrats Ryan.
Interesting how you look exactly as I had pictured. What's the buck score
Great buck Ryan, that's a tank!
C’mon Thornton this thread is not political or controversial. I almost didn’t post because of s#%t like you post. Just give it a break. This post is about the deer not me or my opinions.
Edit: response to Thornton’s question on the score…21-14 at the half.
Thanks Sito and be still. Congrats to those who punch tags and good luck to everyone still after it. I still got bowhunting rookies with tags to fill. That’s the only mission…pass it on.
Edit: the rookie punched his first ever deer tag tonight (24 hours after I shot mine). Shot a nice first buck at 40 yards. Deer dropped with 50 yards and it ran uphill toward an easy pickup location for the truck lol. Perfect shot. He’s hooked on bowhunting for life!!!!! It’s priceless that I got to share another first archery deer with a rookie. I got another rookie going in the morning. Could it be a trifecta?
Two great bucks. Way to go.
Nice bucks fellas……this thread should start filling up pretty quick!
Been concentrating on MO before starting to hunt my place in KS. Was able to tip a good one over Saturday morning. Best one I've seen at the place i hunt with my girlfriend and her dad.
Got it done on my place on Nov 6th. Lot of activity going on. Will try to post a pic.
Congrats Joe… Missouri can be a tough hunt sometimes.
Kurt that’s a beautiful deer.
Shot on 11/5, Magnus Black Hornet, 18 yard shot and 45 yard recovery
Good looking buck. Congrats!
Awesome evening hunt on November 6th. Public land, from the ground. Went in to this place having 0 trail cam, 0 treestand, 0 blind. Just pure hunting and pure reward. 25 yard double lung shot and watched him fall 25 yards later.
Brian & Zach you guys are killers! Congrats gentlemen!
Great bucks guys. No better feeling when you pull off a hunt like that Zack.
Awesome Zachary! That's the stuff that dreams are made of :D
Awesome encounter with the ice fishing sled:)
Congrats!!!

Wanted to share the successful year I have had to this point. Never did tag out last year(still enjoyed every minute in the stand) but this year has helped to make up for that.
Buck #1 First during youth season, Gunner(my middle child) with my assistance was after a nice velvet drop tine buck. On our second hunt as we were walking to our blind I had to stop Gunner as the velvet buck was already out in the plot. We set up on the ground with his cross bow just in case he decided to come our way. No such luck! However on hunt number 3 we had a nice 130 class buck come wondering in and Gunner was more than excited once he laid eyes on him. The buck didn’t make it easy as he worked is way around us. We then watched him make a scrape at 80 yards as the light began to fade. The entire time I am just hoping that he decides to come our way. Lucky enough he did and Gunner made a great shot at 33 yards.
Buck #2 We circle back to the velvet drop tine buck for this story. During summer this deer was a regular on the property and we had tons of pictures. This was one of the main reason Gunner and I were after him during youth season. Well not long after youth season he decided to disappear for a few weeks. When he finally came back he was about 70 pounds lighter and still had most of his velvet dried on his antlers. I thought he was either sick or injured but wasn’t sure which. He started to be a regular again on the farm so I decided to make him my priority and I was able to connect with him in early October. Come to find out it appeared that he was hit by a car. Was actually doing pretty well and we all think he was making a good recovery. With that said, I’m not sure there was any chance he could have made it through rut or winter. He is my biggest buck to date so I was more than happy with the decision to go after him.
Buck #3 Since I tagged out so early in KS I asked my wife if she would mind if I purchase a NE archery tag. She gave me the go ahead so it was game on. I did a little public land scouting and found a spot that I liked. I hunted one Friday evening and saw 4 decent bucks come through. I decided that spot was worth an all day sit so the next day I did just that. On November 5th I used my climber to get in the tree at 6:30am and planned to sit all day. This was one of the best hunts I have had to date. I saw 11 different bucks, 1 doe, 2 coyotes, 50+ turkey, 1 bow hunter and 2 turkey hunters. There was activity all day long! The best buck I saw out of the stand came through at 12:30 but unfortunately for me that is the same time one of the coyotes came from the other direction. Even with that slight disappointment things changed real fast at 6:10 pm when I saw a mature buck from the corner of my eye. Luckily for me he decided to stop in some evergreens in the perfect spot for me to get a quick look at him and I knew right away I would shoot him if given the chance. It wasn’t 10 second later that he crossed into my shooting lane at 35 yards and I was lucky enough to take him!
My oldest son is still on the hunt so hopefully we can end season with some success for him.
Pictures are attached of all three bucks. This was submitted from my phone so sorry if the formatting is poor.
I always enjoy following this site and being able to follow along and learn from other bowhunters. Good luck to everyone!
Way to go, Jeff! It sounds like y’all have had a season to remember!
Had a fun morning yesterday. Saw where a few does crossed my creek and wasn't in the game from my stand. Bailed out and sat in front of a fallen over tree. This guy walked by not too long after at 21 yards. Made a good hit and watched him go down 70 short yards away. First one off my own place and I am very happy!
Wow! Guess I missed this Jeff, good stuff and congrats to Gunner! Joe that's a great buck, pretty cool to take him on your own ground!

Rambo,. Great buck. Love the traditional equipment.
Congrats, been some good ones taken.
Congrats Jim, great buck.
Jim: glad you are still getting it done up there in MS Co. may stop by your place one of these days.
Sunday was the best day I've ever had in a treestand. Had 3 bucks over 160 within bow range and ended up shooting my biggest ever, a 15 pointer that scores 172. Had to back out and leave him over night and the yotes beat me to him. Sucky part of bow hunting, put a damper on it for sure but it was the right thing to do.
Now that's a COOL buck, congrats Travis!
The ugly part about having to leave them lay. Unfortunately it was the only choice. In the end I made a much better shot that I thought and could of gone back in and gotten him most likely but you simply don't know and you don't want to push and lose any buck but especially a gross Booner.
Great buck Travis. Too bad the coyotes found him, but it happens.
Got off work at 2PM, got to a stand at 2:48PM, decided I didn’t like it, got out at 2:59PM and moved to a stand at the bottom of the hill about 125 yards away. Got an arrow knocked and bow on the bow hanger, rattled the horns and had him killed at 3:18PM….Couldn’t have went any smoother!
Travis, That's a great buck. Unfortunately, Coyotes are a problem in many areas. I left the buck I shot near there 3 years ago. I found him the first thing the next morning and Coyotes had found him. Fortunately, I only lost one hind quarter. Cw, great buck. It sounds like a fantastic hunt.

Travis that’s a big en. Austin that’s a good one as well.
My wife and I both doubled the same evening. Hunting some private land on a gracious invite from a friend
Wow that’s impressive Michael. Congrats to both of y’all.
Congratulations, Arnette Family!
Two great bucks Michael. Congratulations to both of you.
Wow! Thats a special day for you guys. Congrats!
Some great deer posted for sure. And to double up... that's an amazing day! Congrats to all.
Congrats everyone!!! Beautiful deer all around!
This was Friday the 11th. Fought the wind with very little activity until 1:45 pm. Very happy with a good shot and a short track.
Great buck with your recurve Derek.

Well we had a particularly Awesome evening, congrats everyone one on some great looking deer this year!
November 21st, grunted this guy into 10 yards. 16 points, grossed 181 1/8". My best buck to date.
Lots of nice ones hitting the ground!
This is the best week of the season to kill a big one, if you ask me.
Good bucks fellas. Caley I like that one. Now Kyler I don’t need to hear a sentence like that.
Might just to have to hop in the truck in the morning and head north. I really don’t need to open this thread anymore:?)
Awesome deer all around!!!
That had to feel good Caley, any other angles? I'd like to see that right side a little better, congrats!
That’s a fantastic buck Caley. Congrats
I’m sleeping in tomorrow. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone still holding.
Been a long time follower having lived in KS 3 x over the years. I was finally lucky enough to get my KS giant yesterday morning and put a pic on the meat pole.
Awesome buck Jared! Nicely done.
Excellent. Looks like he had a bad fight and probably lost that R eye.
Jason he did. Huge cut over the top and the eye was damaged as well. He was a brawler. It probably let me get the shot as he couldn’t see me fumbling to get ready to shoot! Not what I expected to see on public, but I knew big deer were around.
This guy came out of nowhere to fight a 8 point under me.
Congrats to all the successful hunters. Lots of great bucks. Thanks for sharing.
Spot and Stalk, Public Land, WIHA.
Nice deer Chad, hope a lot more auction Karma comes your way.
Pretty looking deer fellas…congrats to all of y’all.
Beauty Quinn! I'm going KS bound next year. These late CO plains opener's have been painful as of late.
Nice job Jared, Dan, and Chad!
The Kid's Link
It's been a few years since I shot one and I was fortunate enough to shoot this bloody tined ten-pointer. I'm thankful I was able to get it all on film as well! Hope you enjoy it!
Nice Chris! Thanks for sharing the video.
Chris- great video. I love the reaction and body language after the shot. Anxiety and excitement all at once and all genuine. That’s what it’s all about! Congratulations on a great deer.
Excellent video buddy, and a great deer! Steve you did pretty well behind the camera too, I think they say...."a face made for radio" ;?)
Kid, great footage........the one-horned buck had a squinty eye on the busted off side that looked like he probably got eye poked before his half rack got snapped off.
Chris that video is impressive and a very good deer as well. Your footage is professional looking and you do a very good job. I’ve never have subscribed to anything but I’m going to get her to show me how and I’ll subscribe to your videos.
Thank you all for the nice words! I really appreciate you guys watching it. It can be really frustrating at times trying to self-film, but it is worth it. Good luck to those still with a tag. Hopefully, I can get my dad on a nice one.
Chris…great hunt. Looks like he was on a mission…but your mission prevailed.
Good end to a season nice job Chris
Same stand I shot mine from and this old warrior died with in 10' of where my buck died. Atta Boy son! Yes he had his blaze orange on but we took it off for pics. He stole my KBA hat for the pose
Nice one! Congrats to all who scored!
I try and try to make sure photos come out right but ill be darned if they end up wring everytime. Thanks
Whoa he’s heavy horned. Tell him congrats.
Ya pics never do justice when the kid is 6'4" 220#
Here is a buck from Central Kansas. I do not know any of the details. Anybody on here shoot it?
Oh that was me.....then I woke up and realized it was all a dream
Not sure if he’ll hit it, but 160” deer don’t usually get a lot of attention anymore for some reason… at least not enough to have people questioning where it came from.
Beautiful buck, if it was fully mature I’d dedicate my whole season to killing him. Love those muley forks.
Cuz of cornpiles, Ray. 160" unbaited is like a 190" with a crossbow over a pile.
Been there,
My heart sank a minute on that pic. We are in Central Ks and my FIL and I have been hunting a buck very similar to that. It's not ours , whew!
I remember the first 140” buck I shot a 140” buck… Late 90’s. People were talking about it all over the place. Great coffee shop talk.
Shot a 170” buck in 2000, you would have thought I killed the state record talking to locals.
Now if someone kills a 170” buck it’s a “pretty good buck”.
Not sure what’s happened, but you might be right Cherney. I’m guessing a lot of it has to do with fewer people hunting and expectations vs. reality is skewed due to TV… and there are few coffee shops.
Everything is different and I don’t like it.
Big difference score was not used much as a concern as how many points it had and if a score was mentioned it was the official net score that would be entered into the books. A true net 140" deer back then is everybody's 160incher now. This really skews the views of what a truly big deer looks like.
Took my 8 year old son out tonight, his first actual hunt. This guy came into 100 yards. I know its gun, but I wanted to get his first deer. Got it on video as well!
Man that look! Good job men
Heck yea congrats to the young man!
Exciting stuff right there Thane. Congrats to your son.
Wow. First deer. That kid set the bar high. Congrats
Pulled some frames out of the video.
Maximus:. Congratulations to your son. He will remember that the rest of his life.
That's awesome! Your kid is now spoiled. :). Congrats.
#5 out of #10 to completing the North American Super 10. Going to have to do some research at the age of 34 I’m not sure how possible it will be to complete it with the mountain goat and sheep just for the fact of what it cost and how many points it probably takes. But was lucky enough to harvest this cat with my bow a few days ago! Obviously not shot in KS, but I’m from KS so figured it was post worthy!
Absolutely. Beautiful cat congratulations
Bucket list hunt, congrats man
Thanks slate and Sito…. I think my eyes tripled in size the second I laid eyes on it! I’ve seen them in the zoo, but never in the wild and knowing it could come down and eat me for a snack if it pleased! Adrenaline rush for sure!

My daughter hunted hard this year. She made a great shot tonight with a rifle. First deer for her and well earned. We had a lot of fun together.
This is good Sam, congrats to both of you!
Congrats to your daughter KSJHawk! That’s awesome.
I know that was fun for y’all Sam and congrats.
Austin congrats on your cool cat as well.
Garlic butter and tenderloins for her breakfast I hope? Congrats to her!
Awesome work all around!!!
Congrats! Waaaay bigger than my first one.
Glad she earned it. I grew up pushing deer with my grandpa. I wouldn’t trade those memories for anything, but I’m glad I took a different path later in life.

I was able to get the video of my sons hunt edited. Sorry its gun, but I think its a good way for a kid to learn. Sorry Kyle as there might be a few golden things on the ground. Its not my stand, but a good friend offered it and said several nice bucks that where frequently hitting it.
Don’t ever apologize to anyone Thane or feel like you need to explain. That’s an awesome hunt with your boy. Congratulations again
Nice job Dad! Congrats to your boy. Thanks for posting the video.
Gotta love that smile he had Thane, years of good times ahead of you two
I hope so Kyle. He grandpa offered to mount it and we made summer sausage and jerky. It will last about a week in this house and he will want to go shoot a doe. He wanted to leave early and I told him we was staying until dark. Told him he needed to learn patience. Afterwards I asked him if he was glad we stayed. Answered yes!
Great stuff, and mixin in a little Reckless Kelly is always good!
That’s just awesome. You know a lot of kids are spoiled these days… and I think it’s a good thing. Way more ethical than what I was taught…. and MUCH safer. Wish I could get the funds together to get a blind like that. Made one out of a water tank, works, but not nearly as comfortable as one of those.
I was taught to unload my rifle at a running buck from an early age.
Do what you enjoy and make as many memories with those kids as possible. Tomorrow isn’t promised.
I just wanted to share a pic and quick recap of my son Lane's success this evening after a tough season. It's been a fun season and congratulations to everyone who was able to get it done. I hope to put together some footage that I'll do my best to share as I always enjoy the various sights of each season. I need to do quite a bit of editing yet, but that can wait as I am so proud of Lane on his journey to take his first buck with his compound bow. He had previously hunted with a crossbow due to his inability to draw the appropriate weight when he was younger. After a couple of unsuccessful seasons and countless hours on stand, it all came together this cold late season, post rifle, December evening. Unfortunately, I was at a basketball game and couldn't film for him, but I let him know they would be hungry and up on their feet early tonight.
He was less than thrilled to hunt in this weather, but I called him at around 2 p.m. to give him a little pep talk. He went out, shot his bow, got geared up and was in the stand by 3 p.m. I was helping with the score table at Easton's basketball game when my phone rang. Seeing it was Lane, I was sure he had forgotten something or had a flat, the list goes on and on. I couldn't answer, but he immediately text to let me know he had made a great shot and saw his buck go down. I couldn't believe it as it felt like I had just talked to him minutes prior. I have to admit, I was a bit jealous after freezing to the core this morning while sitting much longer. That's just how it goes sometimes. Don't worry, he had plenty of hunts that went completely opposite.
I was able to scramble home just in time to snap a few pics before the sun crested the horizon. He had experienced the lows of hunting with a bow and I am sure he has now learned to push through the tough times knowing that good things will come. When I was finally able to call him it made me even more proud that he tried to give me all the credit for the stand preparation and for pushing him to get out. I let him know that I had others who pushed me and it's just like anything in life. The good things don't come easy.
I'm still grinding it out, but this truly made my season. There are many different phases you go through as a hunter and as a parent and it sure is fun to see things from a different perspective at times. Seeing your children succeed is one of the greatest rewards as a parent.
Way to go Lane and keep it up Dylan!
Congrats Lane on a late season buck!
Great buck Lane, like father like son!
Great video Thane and congrats to Lane on his buck. Dylan it looks like it has pretty good beam length. Does the tips come close to touching? From this angle it’s hard to tell.
Congratulations to you both. Awesome first buck. Talked to Rick the other day and he told me you were still after them. Good luck Dylan.
doubledrop's Link
Thanks all! Yeah, Mike, still after it, but she’s warming up the vocals I’m afraid. Passed a few I may have shot in my earlier years, but that’s ok. All a bonus from here. I was able to throw together a little reel from November in case any of you get bored. Pretty slow hunts in between, but I had my chance and some years you may only get one.
Great hunt last night food sources are hot!!
Great hunt last night food sources are hot!!
Turned it for ya nice buck! Congrats
Very nice camera work doubledrop and congrats to your son............I thought this year was the toughest I've had in memory hunting Kansas........part of the problem was the frigid temps and wind during my time there.
Gonna really drop here in the next two days.
