Tagged out September 16th in an unusual way on a public land OTC hunt. Last day of week-long hunt we parked the truck, hiked in about 100 yards, and stumbled across a bull laying on its side. As I approached it, it got up and started to move off so I quickly knocked an arrow and shot it. Dropped dead 20 yards away. Turned out it had been shot in the loin by a muzzleloader, probably days earlier. Not how I would've expected to kill my first public land bull, but stoked nontheless!
two moose, Colorado then Idaho. non bow. My 4th and 5th shiras, A bull and 3 cows in Colo and now this ID bull in a marginal unit.
Two moose in freezer is a LOT of meat.
2 hour hunt in Colo bc we found cow moose the evening before opener and closed the deal the next morning and 28 days invested in the Idaho hunt in a marginal unit with low success rates.
I give up trying to use bowsite to post photos. Everywhere else I share these same photos I just tried to post they are perfect and upright and here they post upside down and no way to fix, not that there should be a need.
If permitted the full hunt details for both hunts and scads of photos are posted in attached link where I kinda live-hunt posted updates for over a month as things unfolded, includimg some bowhunting. And where good pictures are not flipped upside down by bowsite software glitches.
Nice job Kirby! Congrats. Thanks for sharing even if it is a link to another site. At least I didn't get a stiff neck from looking at sideways photos. :)
As long as there are some firearm kills, I took the neighbors kid (20) out hunting pronghorn over the weekend. Took him a while to get the nerve to pull the trigger, but now he is hooked. First big game animal & 2nd animal ever (rabbit). He has interest in archery. Now that he has had success, we can start going down that path.
Eastern Colorado Thanksgiving weekend, broken off above the bases on both sides, one of a few bucks I saw missing some horn gotta love those whitetails. I was after meat on this trip anyway so it worked out.
Nice picture of Micha and his buck. Congratulations to everyone on this thread. This year the last day of the season in the rain. First bull. Called him in to 23 yds. Great fun.
Really nice animals gents! Finally had some luck in the Co moose draw and had a short but fun hunt. Actually killed this bull on day 4, had to blast home get some painkillers and test positive for Covid the day before. Circus for sure but ended up super happy.
The pursuit of all Colorado species continues to gain in popularity as bowhunters from across the state strive to complete the Colorado Big 8, Big 9 and even the Big 10.
The CBA Big 8 was created to recognize Colorado bowhunters who have taken 8 of the 10 Colorado big game animals (either sex) with a legal handheld bow and arrow. There is no specific order the animals must be taken and fair chase is implied. If multiple animals of the same species have been taken, simply list the first one.
CBA Big Game Awards
First Success Award (First Timer Award) Individual Species Awards Colorado Big 8 Colorado Big 9 Colorado Big 10 To be eligible for a CBA Big Game Award you must be a current member of the CBA. Qualifying entries must have been achieved with a legal hand held bow and arrow. All animals must be taken in compliance with the regulations and laws of the State of Colorado
The Big 8 is made up of the original 8... WT, MD, Antelope, Elk, Sheep, Goat, Bear and Mountain Lion. (Orion, the rest of your post is correct)
The Big 9 can be achieved with EITHER a Desert BH or a moose. Big 10 is all 10. Either sex of all species apply.
That being said, please direct all entries to me at [email protected] or to my cell at 9704203771. (Billy, only one moose has been entered so far and in the same ball park as yours). Top 3 get awards at the dinner. Help support the CBA which helps support our bowhunting rights in COLO.
We will have the entry page up on the website this week as well.
I am in charge of the display, the records and I am also a Pope and Young measurer, so reach out to me for any help at this years banquet. It is going to be a huge event this year with lots of room at The Ranch in Loveland on March 11th.
Another note... ALL ANIMALS are eligible for the display!
Get with me on anything you'd like to show. Last year we had first timer's doe hides and smaller bucks displayed. We had pictures, euro skulls and artifacts. We aren't just showing trophies... we are celebrating everyone's hard earned success on a platform designed to bring us all together under one roof. The stories and discussions are worth it alone.
Colorado is home to some amazing bowhunters and some popular Bowsiters as well.
No problem trade-doer, and thanks Joe for confirming. I just wanted to clarify the requirement. When I was the Big Game Chair, I occasionally received entries from bowhunters that didn't understand what was required for the Big 8 & 9, even though it was clearly stated at least once a year in the Magazines leading up to the banquet.
Thanks for the compliments on my moose. He must have raked his left paddle against a rock because his points on that side look like they were sanded down. I need a whitetail in Colorado…plenty of those as a kid in the east but none here. Personal goals on top of that would include a desert ram and a lion without dogs. Those most likely won’t happen so I won’t hold my breath but it’s fun to think about.
The lion without dogs thing is really growing on me. I’ve been seeing them more often than ever before. Second night of my moose hunt at dusk, glassing a hillside …hear a bird chirping across the creek bottom which if you’ve heard it you know…not a bird it’s a lion. Watched it come out of the rocks and down to the creek…drink and disappear. Always amazing to watch em
