Howdy y’all, and welcome along! I have been kicking around doing a live hunt the last couple of years, and with the encouragement of a couple of Bowsiters, I have decided to finally do so! I will preface this live hunt, by mentioning the fact that it will most likely end without bone on the ground. As I am extremely picky as to which buck I’ll shoot, I have not taken a buck since December of 2015. If I want meat, I will shoot a doe, and I usually take a couple a year for the freezer. I will only shoot a buck if he is mature, and we all know how much of a challenge hunting mature bucks can be. But hey, that’s what makes it so darn fun!
The rut is on here in Kansas, and what a magical time this is, in a magical place! I feel blessed every day, to call this part of the country home.
I am currently on an 80 of my cousin’s, which has a history of producing some tremendous bucks. In fact, I know there are a couple here now, that I would be absolutely tickled to wrap my tag around. It’s just a matter of getting them within 30 yards!
I am in a stand in a cedar tree, tucked back into the thickness. When I see the deer, it will be in bow range, but it should be a 20 yard shot or less. There were a few deer out in the beans behind me when I drove in this morning. Nothing sighted from the tree as of yet. This is my 7th deer hunt of the season, but my first of November. There will be plenty of whitetailing action to come from here on out.
With all of that out of the way, LET’S HUNT!
Absolutely gorgeous morning to be in God’s creation!
I am trying to post a couple of pictures, but my poor cell service is not having it. This crappy Verizon coverage will prove to make things difficult.
We have does running all over the place in here this morning, we’re just missing the bucks! I have a feeling that they’re close…
Ive had a handful of does in front of me all morning. It seems that they’re trying to hide from the bucks in here. They’re wound up like a top!
Just had a probable shooter move through out of bow range. I will post pictures when I get back to the house.
Morning y’all! I am back in the same spot I was a few days ago. I have access to thousands of acres of ground, but I consistently see more big deer on this 80, than I do anyplace else. Especially during the rut. This spot is situated along Onion Creek, fondly referred to by the locals as the “Arkanonion”. This creek bottom has consistently been a big buck highway during the rut, for many, many years.
There were several deer out on the beans behind me, when I pulled in. I also saw several coyotes in the pastures on my drive here this morning. It’s a beautifully crisp, frosty morning, and the critters are on their feet.
LET’S HUNT!
Little guy snuck up on me, right under my tree.
A little spike just came through.
Just those two little bucks came through this morning.
I’m out. Back this afternoon.
I’m here on that same 80 acre property, on the ground this morning. It’s quite still out, crisp, and frosty. There were lots of deer out on the beans, both sides of the creek, as I pulled up in the dark. Right now is my favorite time of the rut to hunt. Lots of bucks cruising for does.
LET’S HUNT!
Just had a nice young buck come through. He worked a scrape, grunting and lip curling the whole time.
I have one blowing a couple hundred yards upwind of me. Not sure what that’s about.
3:30 PM
Back on the ground where I was this morning. Bucks are chasin’, birds are chirpin’, fish are jumpin’. It just feels right!
3 does in the beans to the north of me. If they give me a shot, one of them just might get stuck. Need some venison for the table.
A nice looking, wide, younger buck came in and started pushing the does around the beans, grunting with every breath. Coyotes are howling, quail are whistling to me “goodnight”.
I intend to be back out in the tomorrow, to try and beat the “orange army”.
Back on the ground this morning. As soon as I sat down, I could hear, and see, grunting and chasing to the south of me, back in the timber. Could tell what he was. A gorgeous morning to be out in the Lord’s creation.
Slow morning so far. Listening to the quail whistle and the birds chirping on a beautiful, mild, sunny morning. Always enjoyable.
Back this afternoon.
Tomorrow, the Orange Army will swarming the woods, the sound of gunfire breaking the quiet of the countryside. I’m not sure what I’ll be doing over the next several days. There’s certainly always a good chance of losing a target buck right in the coming days. At the same time, the pumpkins usually kick something interesting my way. It ain’t over yet!
Also, how did you personalize your attached photos above with the Independence, KS stamp? Did you do that before you uploaded them to your post or is that a Bowsite feature that I am unaware of? Anyway, I think it looks cool and a very nice touch!
