Poured in the west today and its still coming down at 5 PM (Friday). Does were in my field at 4 PM. Hope they are moving tomorrow for everybody's sake. Hope you get to make use of the extra day on Sunday. Go out and lose your mind and find your soul.
It was clear when I left the house at five. Now it’s all clouded up again. Last morning for me. May get out a few evenings next week. Good luck everybody. Stay safe.
Rut was on his way to the stand before 6 and there was a misty drizzle falling, but a half dozen deer in the field feeding. Dan arrived a little later and headed for the hollow a little bit ago.
Dan saw a very nice 8 point just out of range that was heading for one of the other stands.
Was out at 5am on stand in 5C. No rain. Saw one 4 point nothing seeking. I’m dove hunting now.
Watched this deer for 30 min in the field and would not come closer than 46y. Eventually the deer with it worked it’s way in to 20y, I drew and it stopped- when it moved again it turned it’s head and I could see buttons, so let down. The other deer then started coming closer and I was able to get an arrow in it before the button buck spooked. (That was now at 10y) Pretty proud of myself for “keeping it together” for that long and making the shot count! ;-)
Ed from Carrick just came back to the farm from Armstrong county with a very nice heavy weight 9 point with a split brow tine. Rut has a picture.
Still raining here. We're all gonna watch the Penn State game.
Congrat's Perry and Ed! It poured all day yesterday. No stands. Patty and I went out this morning, however the wind was crazy and the 65-degree weather made for 0 sightings. May hunt tomorrow evening.
Spitting snow this morning at 4:30 and vehicles are covered with snow. None on the ground. It was a little windy. The wind died down before sun up and it isn't bad for 30 degrees. Waiting for the call to help drag one. (Limited to this township only Jr.).
Called in a fork horn to 30y at 7:30- could of shot him. He was walking past at 50y. He stopped on the second grunt. Started coming closer on the 3rd- every grunt his ears perked up and he reacted.
Not sure how well you can see it, but I’m trying a Montana Decoys buck
That's a very skinny deer, Rut. :) Congrats on the deer guys! Yesterday I saw two buck. The smaller one was about 50-60 yards above me, the larger one was about 50-60 yards below me.
Typical for how things have gone all season.
We put on our first push of the season today. The boys both had standing shots with their recurves. One doe 15yds, one 8pt 10yds, both hit saplings that jumped in front of the vitals, clean misses. :)
Tomorrow is my turn to stand. I guess I'll have to show them how it's done.
We saw 4 does and two bucks in the field beside the house this afternoon. Nate saw a couple deer including a four point hitting the scrape. Dan saw the big one from last night this morning then killed a different 8 point late after staying in the tree all day.
LOL Art. Funny thing is I was hunting about 100y from the road and about 11am a pickup truck drove by with the window open looking for deer. He actually backed up and then got his binoculars out and checked out my decoy! : )
At noon I spotted a deer running the edge of the neighbor’s field and ran in to 30y and stopped and looked back from where it came, then took off down the hollow. But whatever was chasing it never came my way. At 4:30 I had another doe come running by and a smaller forkhorn was on her trail. I grunted to see what it would do and it stopped and looked over at my decoy. He came over to 20y and just stared at the decoy for almost 5 min before walking off. Then about 5pm I got a text from Kathy: “DAN SHOT A DEER- GO HELP HIM DRAG” (Dan was down in the hollow with no cell signal, but radioed the house)
Art and Dan with his 8 pt. Dan shot it at 4:30 as it was working a scrape. He was in the hot stand today as he saw 3 different buck. All 3 were legal....................
Good job Dan, congrats...
Way to go Dan! Congrats!!
Rut, he was checking your deer out because he wanted to make sure it wasn't a robo deer, we all knew what came next.
Snowing at lunch time in Clarion County.
3:15 and it is still falling, about an inch so far.
My 8 year old son Tyler took this thick old warrior Saturday evening.
7 inch base on one side and 6 6/8 on the other!!
LOL John! I was glad to see (binoculars instead of a rifle barrel) sticking out the window! ;-)
Ben- VERY cool deer! Congrats to your son! Any idea how old it is?
Rut- I got pics of him the last 3 years I know for sure that it’s him. Never grew much except added mass every year.
I’m going to send a tooth in to find out his age
Cool! Let us know what you find out!
Way to go Tyler and Ben. May be 4.5 then? LOL.
Congrats to Perry, Dan and all the successful hunters this week and so far this season!
Work has been a real damper on my hunting time this season but I'm hoping to make it out a few more times before rifle.
I tore my rotator cuff in my right shoulder on Sept. 18th, slipped and fell in the yard of all things. In hindsight I'm very glad I was able to kill a doe the day before on the 17th. I can still shoot my 50# recurve and my surgery isn't until Jan. 11th so hopefully I'll be able to kill a buck with my bow yet this season. I'll give it heck with PT after surgery and with any luck be able to hunt with my recurve again next season and not miss a beat.
Good luck to everyone the rest of the season and stay safe!
Congrats to all the successful hunters!! (you too Ben, nothing better than seeing your son connect). Would love to see the age on that deer.
Congrat's Tyler! Many nice bucks on camera's over the last few days. All at night. I am not liking the cold/wind anymore, but may hunt tomorrow.
Anybody been out sitting in the woods this week? Snow on the ground and very windy here in western PA. I see plenty of deer from my porch window next to the house in the afternoons.
The boys and I have been taking turns pushing out the woodlot each evening after work. Deer are seen (5-10) on every push but they aren't going where they are supposed to go.
They must not have gotten the memo Red! ;-)
Nice non-legal buck chasing does again this afternoon next to the house. Cold weather isn't slowing him down any.
Hunted Saturday and Sunday on state ground and mornings on Monday, Wednesday, and today. Saturday I hunted with my buddy Seth and glimpsed a buck passing through some thick laurel. Later got down and walked up on a buck making a rub. He snort wheezed as he started down over the side. Tried calling him to me but the wind shifted and he never responded. We moved to another area for the evening. Set up camp, but got skunked in the evening. Got a little damp and then the temperatures dropped overnight and the wind picked up. Ice on the tent when we woke in the morning and flurries blowing horizontally all morning. Nothing moving near me or Seth this morning. Broke camp and hit another different spot for the afternoon. Seth got really close to getting a shot at an 8 point from the ground. The buck was bird dogging it trying to find the doe that spooked away from him when Seth entered the laurel thicket. The buck came out 7 yards away but turned straight away without offering a shot. So close! I found some good sign but didn’t see any deer.
Same story Monday morning. Skunked
Wednesday I dragged a scent trail to my tree and had a decent buck at 20 yards before good shooting light. He eventually got my wind and vacated. Another little buck was behind him and was interested in the scent of the doe but not the scent of me in a tree. Saw two more that got bumped by the neighbor and another single deer before climbing down
This morning I laid another scent trail to my stand but had several deer bust out on my way in. Crunchy snow made stealth impossible. Had a doe come in below me. Then a spike checked her before coming right to me. Winded me and that was it for the season

Sounds like a good time, except for that wind.
So you did your annual backpack hunt Curtis?
