posted on Fb and CT hunting haven't been on in while here but i thought i share Well this might be long, sorry but this was a 3-year Journey that ended today. I had this “Magnificent 9” on Dec 3rd 2020 to January 2021 - 38 straight nights on the camera. Then again last year 11-27-2021 to end of January 2022 probably 45 nights. The only daytime photo January 8,2022@ 7:06 am. Only issue I had a phone call from my brother in law (who is legally Blind) @330 am had breathing issues and heart strain. I picked him up to go to Bridgeport hospital by 345am stayed till 11am. My spy point up loads while I’m at the hospital and there he is in daylight. Brother in law ended up being ok so all good. Maybe good Karma will follow. I get a 9-24-2022 picture of the buck at Night tis season, well I’m happy he’s still alive. I’m Hunting a big ridge that goes for along way plenty of houses back up to this ridge and when shed hunting I have seen a few stands. All part of hunting these days. Sure, enough this buck shows up on a very Hot doe yesterday few houses down from where I am set up and in a small valley. I went in today after work (we got out at 12 noon today). So, I sat in my blind on a little knoll on the ridge. Got settled hit the doe can 1 pm and then few grunts. At 130pm this doe comes in right by me 25 yards, I pull back figuring the buck must be nearby, we had what felt like a 20 min. standoff, it was more like actually 2 mins. She seen me pull back (or caught movement) she still took a few steps towards me, then she trotted past me, she went like 20 yards and stopped as soon as she did that the buck lurking below came right up and was going to cut her off. 1st thought I said oh my God how wide and big. He stopped like 41 yards away not on the same trail. When I tell you, I would usually never shoot this far(I have practiced a few times) I had one opening through some cover. Well I prayed to God and My father who’s always looking over me, thanks dad., I said please one time, took a deep breath and the arrow found its mark. I almost jumped out of my skin when he went 20 yards and dropped, seems like he was lifting his front shoulders to get up. At 1st I thought I spined him, but not even close the enter hole is right behind shoulder- double lung. I got up in the blind as I shot on my knees. I went straight to my truck call my good ole friend Mark Hiller. I was jumping out of my skin, He had to calmed me down on the phone and I got undress and just waited for Mark to come. I so wanted to run back in. Thank God for Mark, wasn’t sure if he was going to drag the deer and me out -lol. Deer was dead maybe 70 yards from where I hit him. Took some pics and high fives my adrenaline was racing. I did measure with tape when I got home it might not be 100% but it is very close score. I’m not always into the score so much, But I know when I got a Good CT deer, only scored a couple out many bucks taken. This deer is 23 inch wide (maybe 23 ¼ at its widest). weight- I’ll find soon I was hoping for 200lb, but I think more like 180’s 190lb. He is very long and I would say 5.5 to 6.5 years old. Again, the BowTech extreme (2007) that Sean Roberts tuned up and new strings this summer. I went from 52 lb draw and Sean bumped it up to 71lbs, without this tuning I could never made that shot. Tagged out in CT and can enjoy the holidays, I will have to hunt Westchester in December a few times. I got a official scored today by a certified person I learned a lot Like where to measure circumstances ( not at the thickest part) where the point starts . 147 7/8
Wow amazing deer. Congratulations.
Congrats, awesome buck. The other one is not too shabby either. Don't you have to wait 30 (60?) Days for official measurement?
Inrut, a beauty, congrats
i did not wait just got on 11-23-2022 , but I scored 151 1/8 , but this guys who scores ( a lot and did some state scoring) showed me where the point meets the beam , not the middle of the beam ( or bloodline) and the 4 circum are to me measured ( i measured the thickest part of the rack between the points) , so i got a little learning lesson
Is mark heller on the left there?
A very fine buck indeed, Congrats
is he out of retirement from deer butchering yet?
What a great buck, congrats!! Is his bottom jaw off to the side? And thanks for the long story, I always love to hear how things went down.
Shot over a pile of corn?
great story and great deer- Congrats !
Congratulations, very nice buck. What is the purpose of the blue tape on the rack?
Blue tape is to score. Needs a drying age to be exact tho
2wildbill take the tape off and measure the tape . Some people use a thin wire
yeah my blue tape just to see what it might green score , i did string and tape measure then had a guy who does hundreds and is very accurate , i'll let it dry it might shrink it might not , but to be honest i don't care its my best buck with the bow to date and in CT , my 3 year journey was great kinda sad now .
Definitely an awesome deer. The score is cool but really doesn’t matter. Onto the next challenge.
Awesome buck and story (history with that buck) Congrats! What's the story with the other buck?
awesome buck. that 6 pt is huge too
the 6 was Mark Hiller 130 5/8 long deer had almost 27 inch main beams 22 wide
why is the bottom jaw pushed to the side, looks like he was laying dead for a while and rigor set in. Or did you punch him in the mouth and knock him out first?
Yes BBB when you kill a deer and lay it down while before rigor-mortis sets in, the jaw will lock up that way. The deer you left over night probably had a similar jaw thing going on.
Blood - sorry, I didn't know you were there with InRut. Thanks for answering. My deer did lay down overnight and you can really see how disfigured his head is. :>)
Bob, any hunter who has hunted long enough has had or has seen a deer with a crooked jaw when it’s left long enough. Cmon. You’ve been in this game long enough to know some obvious sh!t.
Blood is right. Only let a few lay over night. Luckily
OK, so where did InRut say he let the deer lay for "long enough", because I didn't read that in his post, so I was wondering if he did let lay there for a long time, and the only way for me to KNOW that is to ask since I wasn't there like you? I was just curious because I would be dragging that big boy out ASAP, sorry for upsetting you with the question.
And I'm not just any hunter who has hunted long enough, I've hunted too long. And I only know obvious sh*t if I step in it.
So InRut, did you let that big buck just lay there for hours as you were waiting for Mark to help with the drag?
Bob, I wasn’t there. Bet that deer got like that in the bed of the truck….. you get so mad, but sometimes you ask dumb questions and derail threads. I know you only have shot two deer in the last 22 some odd years…..we all would love to know about when you were a hunter before the last two decades. Cmon, open up and share some strategy from back in the 90’s. What was it like then? I’m being serious.
I'm just joking around, sorry if you think I'm mad. There's no one, or anything on this site that could make me mad. Someone asked if that was Hiller, another asks what's the blue tape for, someone asks don't you have to wait 30-60 days, and I asked about the shape of the jaw, and you pick that one question to say it's dumb. Not sure why.
And I've consistently said that I don't need to kill a deer to consider my hunts successful, and I'm not sure why that bothers anyone? People on this site get criticized for shooting too many deer, or shooting in the backyards, or with a crossbow, and others get criticized for not shooting enough. It's so typically of social media warriors.
The best advice I can give for hunting, or anything else you do in life, is to do what you enjoy, live your life your way, and have fun. I'm just having fun.
I wonder how long InRut's buck lay down??
BBB. All of your dumb questions aside, what were you like before you stopped killing deer? Before you lost the need/urge to spill blood?
I don’t go in the woods to relax I go to hunt. Relaxing is just a bonus. If I want to relax I’ll stay home with my family in a nice warm house and have a few beers. I have however passed on a ton of deer. Just liked watching them. You actually end up learning a lot. So I get it.
BBB the Jaw on my deer was because it was in my truck for 2 days before i brought to Mark's house , it was on the tail gate up head ( jaw resting on tailgate) with the antlers showing nice out the truck. had 20 bags of ice in it ,under and on top , meat was all good . dropped off to get mounted the jaw was fine back to normal . yes in my truck 2 days shot on Wed Nov 23 took to marks on Friday Am . had a show and tell on thanksgiving , Good luck to everyone.
I was just wondering if it had a previous injury. I've seen one buck this year (not hunting) near where I hunt that had a bad limp. I also watched a video of a deer that someone shot the bottom jaw off.
