Took a ride tonight, all the fields that have held deer all fall are now empty and the grass dying back. I guess I need to look at woody browse as the food source now. Thoughts?

The does and yearling I came across Monday were in the barberry eating the red berries and other woody browse. I also found a couple of small scrapes and one rub, but it looked like it was from a small, young buck.

I guess a poor acorn year will get them on browse earlier.

I have been seeing deer in corn fields eating cover crops quite often.

I haven't come across any lawns in the NW woods corner, probably because there no houses.

Must be hard to find those deer on 1-2 acres steve. Lol. Lawns/massive 100lbs corn feeders on timers! What ever works

Brian - I did notice that the deer that were in the fields I drive past are no longer out there now, so the frost may have changed their feeding habits like you suggest. And this was the first time I found deer in the barberries in one area I hunt, so I think that's a good point.

I drove back from Newport this afternoon. Fields were loaded with deer. Probably saw 25-30 deer in fields and along 138 and 95.

All the deer on my property are all back in the fields in the afternoon. The does are herding back up in bigger groups.

Originally as I sat in my stand over looking some hay fields this afternoon, with nothing showing up, I would agree. I did have a doe show on camera at 4:50 entering the field though..... Anyway. I drove down the road to my other spot and there's 9 deer in the field with a buck pushing them around. Pretty awesome to watch....in the field on the other side of the road there was around 12-15 deer in it. Second rut is on in my neck of the woods. Corn field with winter rye

Another day with just the young bucks cruising....hunted just west of a swampy thicket in an area with a good supply of browse (one day the deer that came within bow range were probably browsing for a good 25-30 minutes.
Probably wait until the week of the 20th before going out a few more times this year. I'll spend the next week doing something out of character; getting my Christmas shopping done before the last minute....
