Wondering about down and dead timber in the Rawah. If you have been there in the past couple years could you please advise.

Took the kids backpacking up McIntyre Creek 2 summers ago. Quite a bit of blow down. Had to be careful with picking a tent site as there was still quite a few dead trees still standing.

Its becoming horrific in the lodgepole stands in many areas. These multi-day windstorms of 40-70 mph are blowing them down like matchsticks. My best ridge-funnel got so bad that even the elk quit using it.

Not every place is the same though, and some of the north facing slopes aren't nearly as bad. But it has definitely changed the elk behavior. A good friend who has a honeyhole and has killed 7 bulls in a row with rifle, didn't see or hear an elk this season. He said the trail he tries to keep open in summer was almost impassable by October.

It’s pretty bad in there. It would probably be best if the whole thing burned before they all blow down.
